Regular readers of this blog will know that I am a total and utter advocate for investing in good quality travel and outdoor gear. I live by the motto “buy cheap, buy twice” and forever counsel you lot to go ahead and a few hundred bucks on backpacks, jackets and hiking boots.

And yet, when it comes to Sunglasses, I am a total and utter cheap skate. In fact I was recently told as much by a Mexican shopkeeper after I tried to barter him down to $5 for a pair of counterfeit Raban Wayfayers.

But today I am going to tell you about my first (well actually second…) time trying a pair of ‘proper’ sunglasses in this review of the Abaco Crash Boat glasses.

Now, at first glance, spending $70 on a pair of sunglasses might seem unnecessary when you can grab a basic pair for $10 at a beach kiosk or gas station and when you are liable to either sit on them, or leave then on the bar at the beach…

However as we will see, the differences between premium and bargain eyewear go far beyond just price.

Lens Quality and Eye Protection:

The most critical distinction between cheap glasses and real glasses lies in lens technology. Cheap sunglasses often lack any kind of proper UV400 protection, which means they may darken your vision without actually blocking harmful UVA and UVB rays. This is a dangerous combination that could cause long-term eye damage.

In contrast, the Abaco Crash Boat sunglasses offer full UV protection and polarised lenses, significantly reducing glare from water, roads, and other reflective surfaces. This enhances both comfort and safety, especially for outdoor or high-light environments. Furthermore if you AB test a cheap paid verus the Abaco Crash, I guarantee that you will notice the difference immediately.

    Durability and Build:

As you can probably guess, $10 sunglasses are typically made from thin plastic with low-grade hinges that wear out or snap all too easily. They’re very much a “use and lose” item and I for one can totally testify this having lost countless pairs over the years.

Abaco, on the other hand, uses impact-resistant polycarbonate frames and double-barrel stainless steel hinges that withstand daily use, accidental drops, and even rough handling.

However, if you are the kind of person who tends to “lose” sunglasses like me, I regret to inform you it’s just as easy to lose a quality pair as it is a crappy pair.

    Fit and Comfort:

A major issue with cheap glasses is poor fit. While they are built as a one size fits all item, in practice they often pinch, slip off, or create pressure behind the ears.

The Crash Boat model however is designed for a secure and ergonomic fit that stays comfortable all day. If you wear sunglasses frequently or for long durations, this comfort makes a noticeable difference.

    Style and Warranty:

While cheap sunglasses come in trendy shapes, they often lack finishing and they scratch easily. Abaco’s style is versatile and refined, backed by a lifetime warranty that even covers accidental damage.

That’s virtually unheard of at any price point, let alone from a $10 pair.

    Cost Over Time:

Although the initial cost of the Abaco Crashes a lot higher, investing in quality means you’ll likely spend less over time.  Furthermore, I had a scan on eBay today and even ‘cheap’ blue lens wayfarer styles are now costing $25. I get that the Abaco are still x 2.8 the price, but the gap is not as bad as it could be.

Basically instead of rebuying cheap sunglasses every summer (or every month), one solid pair can last you years — especially with a warranty backing it up.

The only downside is dropping them a motorbike and losing them….or sitting on them. The Warranty won’t cover these eventualities.

    Final Thoughts

The Abaco Crash Boat sunglasses deliver a classic blend of style, comfort, and functionality. Their durable construction, effective lens technology, and thoughtful design make them a reliable choice for individuals seeking quality eyewear for both outdoor activities and daily use.

With the added assurances that come from a lifetime warranty, these sunglasses represent a worthwhile investment for those prioritizing eye protection and style.?

If you only need sunglasses for a single short trip or don’t mind replacing them often, then a $10 (or $25….) pair might serve you temporarily. But if you value eye health, visual clarity, and long-term durability, the Abaco Crash Boat sunglasses are worth every dollar.
