Alright folks, here is our round-up of the most common questions that we get about travelling in Albania:
What are the best places to stay in Albania?
From beaches to mountains, Albania has a wildly diverse landscape, and each place that you visit offers something unique. From Theth to Ksamil, we’ve got you covered with this full down low in this guide on the best places to stay in Albania.
What is the best SIM card in Albania?
Nearly everywhere I travel these days, I grab myself an eSIM. Albania is no different. They are super easy to set up, and it means you’re connected as soon as you land. We use JetPac, and we can’t recommend them enough.
Is it safe to drive in Albania?
Yes and no. I wouldn’t recommend driving into the north (pretty much anywhere above Shkoder), the roads are super rugged, and most companies don’t allow you to drive there anyway.
However, the rest of Albania is EPIC for a road trip – especially along the Albanian Riviera. Just note, the driving in Albania is pretty loose, so drive slowly and keep your wits about you.
What is the best group tour to join in Albania?
Ours (duh!!). The Broke Backpacker has launched an EPIC Albanian Alps Adventure Tour, and we would love for you to join us. It is an 8-day journey into the heart of the Balkans, a land of towering alpine peaks, crystal-clear rivers, and vibrant, welcoming culture.

The tour is designed for travellers who crave raw beauty and meaningful connection. Expect to kayak across the fjord-like waters of Komani Lake, boat through the crystal blue Shala River, hike over the legendary Valbona Pass, and wander through trails to discover alpine villages like Theth and Valbona.
Which is the best car rental company in Albania?
There are plenty of car rental companies to choose from in Albania. We highly recommend using DiscoverCars.com to compare, book and grab insurance for your road trip in Albania.
What is the best taxi company to get from Tirana Airport?
Albania doesn’t (yet) have the likes of Uber, so your best bet for getting a taxi when touching down in Tirana is to book one through Blue Taxis.
Do I need travel insurance for Albania?
Although it is not essential to obtain travel insurance when travelling to Albania for a short stay, it is highly recommended. We always hope that nothing will go wrong, but unfortunately, shit can happen beyond our control. We use SafetyWing cover for our travel insurance needs.
How do I plan the Valbona to Theth hike?
Although the Valbona to Theth hike is awesome to do as part of a group tour, you can also do it solo – it just requires a bit of logistics. Lucky for you, we’ve outlined everything you need to know in this overview of the Valbona to Theth hike.
Is Albania safe for solo travellers?
Yes! Albania is absolutely safe for solo travellers. As with everywhere you travel, you should always take precautions to keep yourself safe. If you want to dive more into this, you can check out our guide on “Is Albania Safe?”
