Turkey is a country where you can feel the influence of two continents everywhere you go. Ancient and modern sit side by side, from the chaos and energy of Istanbul to sleepy coastal towns and remote mountain villages. It's a place where you'll eat incredibly well, meet some seriously welcoming people and probably end up staying longer than planned. Come for the famous sights, but give yourself time to discover the Turkey beyond them.

    Turkey Travel FAQs

Why is Turkey also called Türkiye?

Türkiye is the country's official name and you'll increasingly see it used by governments and international organisations. Turkey is still widely used in English-language travel information, so you'll see both names when researching your trip. Don't worry, they're referring to the same country.

When is the best time to visit Turkey?

Turkey is a year-round destination, but spring and autumn are particularly good for travelling around the country, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer is ideal for the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, while winter brings snow to the mountains and some of the country's ski resorts.

Why is Turkish tea such a big deal?

Tea is a huge part of everyday life in Turkey and is often offered to guests, shopkeepers and customers as a sign of hospitality. You'll see it served in those little tulip-shaped glasses everywhere, so accepting a cup is a pretty easy way to experience a small but important part of Turkish culture.

What Turkish food should you try?

Don't stop at kebabs. Turkish food is ridiculously varied, from menemen and gözleme to pide, meze, lahmacun and baklava. Regional specialities are worth seeking out too, and you'll struggle to travel far without being offered a glass of Turkish tea.
