Central America
Central America is pretty much made for backpacking. You can hike up a volcano in the morning, swim in turquoise Caribbean waters by afternoon and spend the evening knocking back beers with the other travellers you've met along the way. It's cheap, diverse and packed with adventure.

Central America Travel FAQs
What’s the best way to travel around Central America?
Buses and shared shuttles are the main ways to get around Central America, and they’re generally affordable and easy to book. Local buses are the cheapest option, while tourist shuttles are often more convenient for longer journeys and border crossings. Flights can save time when you’re covering bigger distances or travelling to more remote islands.
When is the best time to visit Central America?
The dry season from around December to April is generally the most popular time to visit, with sunnier weather and better conditions for beaches, hiking and getting around. The rainy season can still be a good time to travel, though, with fewer crowds and lower prices. Just be aware that rain and storms can affect some routes, particularly during the wetter months.
How long do you need to backpack Central America?
Central America may look small on a map, but there’s a lot to see. Around 4 to 6 weeks gives you enough time to travel through several countries without rushing, while 2 to 3 weeks is better spent focusing on one or two countries. If you have longer, even better!
Is Central America safe for backpackers?
Central America is generally straightforward to backpack, but safety varies between countries and regions. Take normal precautions, avoid travelling at night where possible and check the latest travel advice before visiting. It's also worth researching individual destinations rather than treating the whole region as one.
