Armenia Travel FAQs
Is Armenia cheap for backpackers?
Generally, yes. Local food, public transport and guesthouses can be good value compared with much of Western Europe. Yerevan has pricier options, but travelling outside the capital can be kind to your budget.
When is the best time to visit Armenia?
May to June and September to October are usually great for comfortable temperatures, sightseeing and hiking. Summers can be very hot in lower areas, while winters bring snow and colder conditions, especially in the mountains.
What food should you try in Armenia?
Start with khorovats, Armenian barbecue, then try dolma (stuffed vine leaves or vegetables), lavash flatbread and gata, a sweet pastry. Armenian food is made for sharing, so arrive hungry.
Is Armenia safe for backpackers?
Many travellers visit Yerevan and other parts of Armenia without major problems, but regional security matters. The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all travel within 5km of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Check before planning routes, as conditions can change.
