How to Support The Broke Backpacker

Hello friends and fellow adventurers!

I want to take a second to thank you for visiting our humble little travel blog!

This year has been extremely difficult for the travel industry and we have been running at a loss for several months now. We have a big team of awesome people to keep employed and it’s been a challenging time for us.

The Broke Backpacker was created to provide fellow adventurers with the best possible advice and to enable them to go further. Ultimately, this site exists for the sake of you guys, and not the other way around.

We will NEVER ask for any sort of donation, require any sort of subscription, or troll anyone with a paywall – that’s just not the way we do things.

But you can help support The Broke Backpacker. Simply by booking your accommodation or buying your travel gear through our affiliate links, you help us keep our team employed and keep the site free for everybody.

When you make a purchase through one of our affiliate links, we get a (small) cut of the sale. It’s incremental, but it’s incredibly helpful.

If you bookmark this page and use it to plan and book your next adventure (whenever it might be), then you will be helping us out big time. Thank you in advance for helping us with this, it means the world to us.

It’s important to note that we FIRMLY believe in only recommending quality backpacking gear, the best hostels and the most unique AirBnBs, The Broke Backpacker is about equipping travelers with the necessary tools they need to travel the world on a budget, without stress. I’m going to give you the best fucking resources possible.

Below I have assembled a list of some of the most useful platforms which we have been personally using for years. Please, bookmark this page, kindly visit it, and click through the links whenever planning your adventures and wanting to use any of these services. That’s all you have to do.

Stuff We Love

hostelworld logo

Hostels are a backpacker’s home away from home. They’re cheap, social, and almost always a good time. Honestly, who doesn’t have a crazy story from a night in one of these?

Why do we love Hostelworld?

Hostelword features THE most complete directory of hostels on the web. If there are four walls and a bunk bed anywhere in the world, you’ll find it here.

FIND YOUR HOSTEL HERE

rei logo

Some call it a recreation store; we call it heaven on Earth. REI is our go-to source for all backpacking and outdoor equipment because we love everything that they have.

Why do we love REI?

One word: quality. The gear that REI offers is simply the best out there. You’ll pay a bit more than usual, but you’ll be investing in the finest money can buy.

BROWSE THE BEST GEAR

We get it: sometimes you want to add a bit of romance back into your life and a hostel dorm isn’t the place to do it. AirBnB is an amazing tool for finding truly unique, really special, often surprisingly cheap accomodation on the road.

Why do we love Airbnb?

It’s easy, it’s affordable, it’s practically everywhere; I guess that’s why Airbnb has become one of the most successful companies in the world. If you need an apartment ASAP, you can find one in five minutes using Airbnb.

BOOK YOUR DREAM FLAT

Grayl is hands down the best filtered water bottle on the market, allowing you to cut back on plastic waste and ensure you can always stay hydrated.

Why do we love GRAYL?

Because it has a filter, you can take water from just about anywhere. The GRAYL filter is particularly effective too, removing 99.9% of bacteria, protozoa, and viruses in addition to particulates.

osprey logo

For more demanding adventures and backpacking trips, you can’t go wrong having an Osprey with you. These are simply the toughest, sturdiest, most reliable backpacking backpacks we’ve ever used.

Why do we love Osprey?

Few backpack companies can compete with the level of quality and customer support that Osprey offers. I’ve put these bags through the wringer – until one was held together by duct tape – and they haven’t failed me yet.

GET EQUIPPED AT OSPREY

nomatic logo

Nomatic makes the sleekest, sexiest 40L travel packs we’ve ever tried. We’ve been big fans of these guys since day one and will continue to use their bags for the foreseeable future.

Why do we love Nomatic?

Nomatic bags are very well designed and look damn good too. They’re practical, ingenuitive, and above all comfortable to travel with. What more should a backpack have?

Our Other Projects

Besides the Broke Backpacker, we have several other projects we’re stoked to share with you.

Over the last few years, I’ve started up a couple of other passion projects, including a tour company leading adventures to Pakistan and other epic countries and the ultimate digital nomad co-working backpacker hostel in Bali. These are my passion projects, my pride and joy, and, I believe, some of the best damn experiences a traveler can possibly have.

If you haven’t already heard about these, here’s a quick review:

Epic Backpacker Logo

A humble tour company that started out with a roll of the dice in the Karakoram mountains. Today, we offer unique, one of a kind, adventures in Pakistan, Iran and Kyrgyzstan. These are trips unlike any other, come and see for yourself…

What do you need to know?

2020 was not kind to Epic Backpacker Tours – we had to cancel all of our adventures on account of Covid. The company was nearly bankrupt as we refunded in full over 100 people. But, we’ve already got bookings for 2021 and we think it will be the best year yet. We’re excited to take awesome people on unique experiences…

SEE THE TOURS

tribal logo

I have dreamed of opening a hostel for nearly a decade… Opening Tribal Hostel will be the culmination of years of experience and hard work. It will also be the best fucking hostel in Bali. Mark my words friends, come find me there for a drink, a chat or a game of pool.

What do you need to know?

Tribal Hostel is currently on track to open in December 2020. When the island of Bali does eventually open again, I will be here waiting for all of you to come to stay with me. And yes, there will be gin; lots and lots of gin.

HOSTEL COMING SOON

broke backpacker logo

The original backpacker’s bible. I’ve poured all of the lessons that I’ve learned over the last decade of traveling into this book.

What do you need to know?

There are two versions available: digital and paperback. The paperback is available on Amazon right now. To get the digital version, simply sign up to the TBB Newsletter and it’s yours. (The newsletter is also rather damn good if I do say so myself.)

Final Thoughts

Never fear my friends: the world will return to a new normal and soon enough we’ll all be out gallivanting across the globe again. I for one cannot wait to return to my favorite country in the world, Pakistan, and plan on doing so the first chance I get. For those who are getting itchy feet as well, I’ve made a video detailing what travelers ought to do to travel safely during COVID times.

As always, make sure you have some form of travel insurance, like Safety Wing, before hitting the road. During COVID times, having insurance is especially important and some may countries may not even let you enter without it.
