Travel Scotland - The Broke Backpacker

Scotland

Scotland doesn't mess around when it comes to scenery. Think rugged Highlands, misty lochs, ancient castles, wild islands and some seriously good whisky. Explore Edinburgh's cobbled streets, hike through the mountains or hit the road and see where it takes you. Throw in a warm welcome, plenty of folklore and a few questionable attempts at understanding the local accent, and you've got a pretty special place to explore.

    Scotland Travel FAQs

What are midges and should I worry about them?

Midges are tiny biting insects that are particularly common in the Highlands and west coast during the warmer months. They're annoying rather than dangerous, but if you're hiking or camping in midge-heavy areas, repellent and covering up can make a big difference.

Do I need a car to travel around Scotland?

Not necessarily. Trains and buses connect many of the major towns and cities, while ferries serve the islands. A car gives you much more freedom if you're heading into remote Highland areas or planning a road trip, but it's perfectly possible to explore Scotland without one.

    What is a Scottish ceilidh?

A ceilidh is a traditional Scottish social gathering involving music and dancing. You don't need to be a brilliant dancer, thankfully. The dances are usually taught or called as you go, so it's more about joining in than getting every step right.

When is the best time to visit Scotland?

Scotland is a year-round destination, but May to September is popular for hiking, road trips and exploring the Highlands, with longer days and milder weather. Autumn brings beautiful colours, while winter is great for snowy landscapes, cosy pubs and Hogmanay. Just remember that Scottish weather can change quickly, whatever time of year you visit.
