Czech Republic

Beautiful cities, medieval castles and some seriously good beer. The Czech Republic is a bloody good shout for a European backpacking trip, and Prague is only the beginning. Get beyond the capital and you'll find pretty towns, forests, mountains and plenty of reasons to stick around for another pint. Best of all, it's still relatively easy on the wallet compared with much of Western Europe.

    Czech Republic Travel FAQs

What's the best way to travel around the Czech Republic?

Trains and buses make it easy to travel between the major cities, and the distances aren't huge. Prague, Brno, Český Krumlov and other popular destinations are well connected, while hiring a car can be useful if you're heading into the countryside.

What Czech food should you try?

Czech food is hearty, filling and very much designed to go with a beer. Try svíčková, goulash, roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, fried cheese and, of course, trdelník if you fancy something sweet. Just don't expect to leave hungry.

Why is Czech beer such a big deal?

Beer is deeply woven into Czech culture, and the country has one of the world's highest rates of beer consumption per person. Pilsner was famously born in the Czech city of Plzeň, and you'll find excellent local beers in pubs across the country. So yes, having a pint is basically cultural research.

    What is Český Krumlov like?

Český Krumlov is a small medieval town in southern Czechia, famous for its castle, winding streets and riverside setting. It's beautiful, but it can get busy with day-trippers, so staying overnight gives you a much better chance to enjoy it once the crowds have cleared.
