Glen Nevis

Glen Nevis is a valley just south of Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis. It’s known for its walking trails, waterfalls and access to some of the best mountain scenery in the Highlands.

When I first arrived in Fort William, it felt like stepping straight into the heart of the Scottish Highlands. Surrounded by towering mountains and rugged landscapes, it’s easy to see why the town has such a strong reputation as a base for outdoor adventure.

What struck me just as much, though, was the sense of history. Walking through town and looking out over the surrounding glens, it was hard not to imagine the battles, rebellions and clan rivalries that once unfolded here.

During my visit, I explored some of the nearby villages too. One afternoon I wandered down to Corpach, where the Caledonian Canal meets the sea, and watched boats passing through the locks. I also took the small ferry from Trislaig, which gave incredible views back across the glen.

Whether you’re looking for peaceful Highland scenery or a base for hiking and exploring, Fort William offers a little of both. Here are five of the best places to stay in and around this part of Scotland.

1. Belford Neighbourhood – Where to Stay for Your First Time

Belford is ideal for first-time visitors because it places you right in the heart of Fort William, surrounded by the town’s character and Highland charm.

One of the must-see sights here is the Old Fort, a partially ruined 17th-century site that played a role in the Jacobite uprisings. Even today, you can still see sections of the old walls and ramparts, making it easy to imagine the drama that once unfolded here.

A short walk takes you to the pedestrianised High Street, where you’ll find shops, cafés and restaurants, perfect for picking up a few souvenirs (and yes, I’ll admit I was tempted by a classic tourist kilt).

Head the other way, and you’ll reach the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre, a great place to stop if you’re planning a hike up the mountain.

Top Things to Do in Belford

1. Visit the Old Fort – home of the historic site and ruins. Outlander fans will also know its significance!

4. Relax at the nearby green spaces and Parade Park.
5. If you want a short hike without tackling Ben Nevis, the trail up Cow Hill offers fantastic views back over Fort William, Loch Linnhe and the surrounding glens.
6. Take a ride on the Nevis Range Mountain Resort gondola, the only mountain gondola of its kind in Britain. It climbs to around 650 metres on Aonach Mòr, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views across the surrounding Highlands (yes, we know this is technically cheating!!).
7. For a cosy evening, head to Highland Cinema. This modern independent cinema offers a high-quality film experience along with a stylish restaurant and bar, making it a great spot to relax after a day exploring the Highlands.
8. Step into an underground world at Treasures of the Earth Museum and discover one of Europe’s finest private collections of crystals and fossils. We’ve been warned to keep an eye out for the hidden trolls along the way, though!

2. Banavie Neighbourhood – Where to Stay On a Budget

Banavie sits just a couple of miles north of Fort William, in the hamlet of Lochaber. It’s an easy walk or cycle from town, and I loved visiting here because of the slower pace of life and classic Highland scenery. The canal paths are perfect for a wander, and you’ll pass the old swing bridge and the railway line, where you’ll be able to see the trains and canal boats crossing paths!

The real highlight for me, though, is Neptune’s Staircase. I was genuinely impressed the first time I saw it (and still am now!) with its eight locks stepping up the hillside. This magnificent design by Thomas Telford lifts boats through the Caledonian Canal.

Two miles from Fort William are the atmospheric ruins of Inverlochy Castle, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Highlands. It’s just a short distance from Banavie and is an easy stop while exploring the area.

The West Highland Line runs right past the canal, and if you time it right, you might see the famous Jacobite steam train passing through on its way to Glenfinnan. Between the railway, the canal boats climbing Neptune’s Staircase, and the views toward the surrounding Highland, there’s always something captivating happening in this ‘wee’ charismatic village.

Things to See and Do in Banavie

1. Marvel at Neptune’s Staircase. The longest staircase lock in Britain, where boats climb eight impressive locks on the Caledonian Canal.
2. Tour Ben Nevis Distillery and enjoy a guided tasting of their Ben Nevis and Glencoe whiskies. A dram here feels almost mandatory for “cultural appreciation”.
3. Explore the ruins of Inverlochy Castle, a remarkably well-preserved 13th-century Highland fortress surrounded by peaceful fields.
4. Walk the Banavie, Caol and Old Inverlochy circular trail, a scenic 2.5-hour route linking canal paths, coastal views and historic ruins.
5. Relax at a canalside café along the Caledonian Canal while watching boats slowly navigate the locks.
6. Walk or cycle the Caledonian Canal towpath between Banavie and Fort William for classic Highland scenery.
7. Watch trains pass along the West Highland Line, and if you time it right, you might even see The Jacobite steam train heading towards Glenfinnan.
8. See the Banavie swing bridge open as canal boats pass through, a small but fascinating part of daily canal life here.

3. Enjoy seafood at Crannog Seafood Restaurant, a Waterfront favourite known for incredibly fresh local shellfish and views across the loch.

Whilst Glenfinnan is technically a short drive from Fort William, it still easily earns its reputation as one of the coolest spots to stay in the area.

I’ll admit, my inner Potterhead was giddy with excitement when I saw the sweeping viaduct, and I could immediately conjure up (get it?!) the image of the Hogwarts Express steaming through the Highlands.

Even if you’re not a Potter fan, the view is absolutely breathtaking, and it’s even possible for you to hop on the train yourself and experience the magic in motion. However, tickets sell out in advance for this, so don’t end up a disappointed fan like me 🙁 get them booked!

There’s a small visitor centre at the base of the viaduct where you can immerse yourself in the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the 1745 Jacobite Rising. I found myself here far longer than planned, imagining the past come alive against the backdrop of the mountains.

• Best For: Potter Fans, history fanatics, and anyone craving just a little bit more Highland scenery.
• The Vibe: Think calm and captivating, some might say spellbinding!
• Proximity to Airport: Just over 2 hours to Inverness Airport
• Transport Level: Best access is by car, but there are bus options available.
