I rocked up to Bandung with little to zero expectations. I had just escaped the chaos that was Jakarta and was hoping to find anything, just anything, that was less overstimulating than the capital.
Low and behold, Bandung felt like I could exhale.
There’s a lot going on here, and it’s far more lively than first impressions suggest. It’s Indonesia’s fourth-largest city, layered with Dutch colonial history, and full of architectural mash-ups that make wandering the streets a joy in itself. If post-colonial cities with personality do it for you, Bandung will be right up your street.
It’s a modern city dotted with striking buildings, many leaning heavily into Western design. Step outside the urban sprawl, though, and that’s where Bandung really shines. Sitting on a plateau about 768 metres above sea level, the city stays cool year-round and is wrapped in volcanic mountains and tea plantations. Fresh air, green views, and genuinely GOOD cuppa come as standard.
The city isn’t huge but choosing where to stay in Bandung will make all the difference to the side of Bandung you get. But don’t worry, I got all the info you need to know to take the plunge and finally book that trip. You’re welcome.

Bandung Wetan
Bandung Wetan sits right in the middle of the city and works well as a first base. This area gives easy access to shops, cafés, and key sights, with plenty of art deco architecture left over from the colonial period. The nearby geological museum offers a solid introduction to Bandung’s volcanic setting and history.
Asia Afrika
Asia Afrika sits in Bandung’s historic core and feels older, calmer, and more grounded than most of the city. Wide streets, colonial buildings, and low-key evenings make it a good base for travellers who value atmosphere, walkability, and culture over shopping and nightlife.
Cihampelas
Cihampelas is one of Bandung’s most well-known areas for shopping and nightlife. The streets are lined with malls, boutiques, restaurants, and clubs, making it a busy place to stay. It suits travellers who enjoy lively evenings and easy access to retail and entertainment.
Lembang
Located north of the city, Lembang sits at a higher elevation and enjoys cooler temperatures. The area is known for nature attractions, scenic viewpoints, and distinctive buildings. Staying here offers a calmer environment while remaining close enough to Bandung for day trips.
Bandung sits in a river basin surrounded by volcanic mountains, giving the city some pretty dramatic vistas. The surrounding countryside has hiking areas, viewpoints, and cooler air to balance the concrete jungle-ness of the city. It feels completely different from other stops I made backpacking Indonesia, which is why I urge you to add it to your own itinerary!!!
Home to around two and a half million people, Bandung is busy, noisy, and very much alive. Getting around is easier than expected, with solid transport links and the main train station sitting right in the city.
Once a Dutch colonial hub built around tea plantations, Bandung gradually morphed into a centre for architecture, shopping, and food. That mix of European influence and Indonesian culture earned it the nickname The Paris of Java, which sounds fancy until you’re eating street food on a plastic stool at midnight.
One of Bandung’s underrated perks is the climate. It stays cooler than most Indonesian cities year-round, meaning you can wander markets, neighbourhoods, and nearby hills without feeling like you’re being slow-roasted. With so much history and charming surroundings, it’s not a stretch to say that Bandung is one of the most beautiful places I visited in Indonesia!

Okay, let’s get into the nitty gritty. Bandung isn’t a huge city, but where you choose your base still makes all the difference.
1. Bandung Wetan – Best Place to Stay in Bandung for Your First Time
Situated in the heart of the city centre, Bandung Wetan is the perfect place to absorb the culture of Bandung. Experience the glamour of the Art Deco period, as well as the fury of Bandung’s volcanic surroundings at Bandung Geological Museum!
With Bandung trains station and Bandung International Airport nearby, it’s an easily accessible area. There’s so much the centre of Bandung has to offer and as it’s so compact, you can do it all without too much hassle.

- If you’re into your architecture, the best place to visit in Bandung is definitely the Gedung Merdeka– a famous Art Deco building doubling up as an interesting museum.
- Ade Irma Suryani Nasution Traffic Garden is not only a beautiful green space, but also somewhere for kids to learn about traffic safety, with some awesome activities on offer.
- Alun Alun Bandung is the perfect place to spend an afternoon, whether you want to laze around in a beautiful open field or get a look at some historical buildings!
Kulem Gempol | Best Hotel
I love a hotel with a bit of soul and Indonesia always does it so well. The rooms are spacious, spotless, and genuinely comfortable, to the point where they feel more like an apartment than a hotel room. A full kitchen setup, a large fridge, microwave, proper dining space, and a living area with sofas and chairs that invite you to sit down and stay awhile. It’s practical, relaxed, and easy to live in.

2. Asia Afrika – Best Place to Stay in Bandung For Culture
Asia Afrika sits right in the historic centre of Bandung and feels more old-city than anywhere else in town. This is where colonial-era buildings line wide streets, giving the area a slightly faded grandeur that hints at Bandung’s past.
This street is anchored by landmarks, government buildings, and heritage architecture, with cafés, small hotels, and street food filling in the gaps. It’s central, walkable, and well placed for sightseeing, especially if history and atmosphere matter more than shopping malls or nightlife.
Staying here keeps you close to Bandung’s cultural roots, with easy access to Braga Street, museums, and public squares. Evenings are calmer than in Cihampelas, with more people strolling than partying.

- Duck into small galleries and boutique shops hidden down side streets.
RedDoorz Plus @ Doorman Guest House | Best Hotel
Rooms at this RedDoorz are comfortable and don’t feel cookie-cutter, with each one having its own theme. The bathroom does the job, there’s an actual table for working, and enough space either side of the bed to dump books and essentials without playing backpack Tetris.
Staff are friendly and on it, the restaurant is well organised, and the terrace is worth your time for the view alone. Being right by the train station is a big plus, especially if Bandung isn’t your final stop.
Mypodroom | Best Hostel
MyPodRoom is a solid option if you want something simple that actually works. The pods are surprisingly spacious, clean, and modern, with built-in lighting and USB ports. The location is a real highlight too, sitting close to the city centre and making it easy to get around.
The staff are genuinely great and add a lot to the experience. Breakfast is included, but it’s very basic, think black coffee, sliced bread, jam, and chocolate spread, so it’s more a quick bite than something to linger over.
Minimalist Studio Apartment | Best Airbnb
This is a great city stay if you like a view with your morning coffee. From the balcony you’re looking out over hills and city sprawl, especially good from the high floors. The room is spotless and the studio setup is fully furnished, with a kitchen and a comfortable queen bed that makes it easy to settle in rather than just crash.
Step outside at night and you’re immediately surrounded by food, with Lengkong Culinary Night sitting right across the road. It’s convenient, comfortable, and well placed for eating your way around Bandung.
3. Cihampelas – Best Place to Stay in Bandung for Nightlife
Cihampelas is one of Bandung’s busiest and most commercial neighbourhoods, and it fully commits to the role. This part of the city revolves around shopping, food, and late nights, with malls, fashion outlets, cafés, and clubs lining the main strip and spilling into the surrounding streets.
Bandung is known for its malls, and Cihampelas is where that reputation really shows. From Indonesian boutiques to established designers, it’s an easy place to spend money without meaning to. After dark, the area shifts gears and leans into nightlife, with themed clubs ranging from karaoke spots to full-blown dance floors.
Staying here means accepting constant movement. Traffic, crowds, music, and bright lights are part of the package, especially in the evenings and on weekends. It suits travellers who want convenience and energy, not peace and early nights.

Things to Do in Cihampelas
- You simply can’t visit Cihampelas without going to Cihampelas Walk – a famous open-air mall. It features local boutiques, international designers, an amazing food court and even some amusements!
- As Chihampelas is famous for its shopping malls, you have to visit one of the oldest – the Bandung Indah Plaza has plenty of cheap shops to choose from and excellent restaurants once you’ve worked up an appetite.
- Walk Teras Cihampelas, a raised pedestrian walkway about 12 metres above the street that runs along the main road, offering a greener, calmer path above the traffic.
- In terms of nightlife in Cihampelas, there’s so much to choose from! The most famous clubs in the area are Shelter, Brotherhood Bunker and Southbank Club Bandung – all perfect to dance the night away!
Zest Sukajadi Bandung by Swiss-Belhotel International | Best Hotel
The rooms here are super spacious and comfortable, with a quality bed and pillows. The air conditioning works well, and all the basic necessities are covered, including a hairdryer and fridge in the room. The location is another strong point, with ride-hailing easy to grab from outside and a minimarket just a few steps away for everyday essentials.

This is another solid pick for families coming through Bandung, especially if you want something boutique without boutique prices. It manages to feel homey and a little quaint while still keeping standards high. There’s a coworking space on site, and the café is a real highlight, with breads, pastries, and coffee that make mornings noticeably better.

The place feels cosy and well looked after, with nice views and a solid set of amenities. Little touches go a long way here, including a generous supply of water for the stay and fast, reliable Wi-Fi. The hosts are friendly, responsive, and easy to deal with. It’s a compact apartment in a convenient part of the city, with food spots, small shops, and laundry services right downstairs.
4. Lembang – Best Place to Stay in Bandung For Nature
Lembang sits north of Bandung in the hills and feels like a reset button after the city. It’s cooler, greener, and noticeably slower, with mountain air, open views, and a steady stream of nature-based attractions scattered around the area. This is where Bandung goes for scenery.
Waterfalls, forests, star-gazing observatories and Buddhist temples – Lembang has a rich variety of activities to get involved in. Just north of the city means you’re a little out of the centre, but with so much to do here, what’s wrong with that?
Alternatively, if you want to head into the heart of the city, the route includes some beautiful roads through valleys and past rivers!

Things to See and Do in Lembang
- Take a stroll around the Djuanda Forest Park, a large and beautiful conservation area and botanical garden.
- If you love your water sports, why not head to Teras Cikapundung, where you can get on the water and see some epic city views from the river.
- Visit Pusat Meditasi Vipassana Graha, a contemporary Buddhist temple established in 1992, ideal for a quiet wander and a slower pace away from the city.
- For some natural beauty, why not go to Curug Cimahi, an enormous waterfall? Be careful though – it can only be reached by a long set of ancient stairs!
Trizara Resorts – Glam Camping | Best Hotel
This resort is a bit of a splurge spot but is WELL worth it for a unique stay in Bandung. The ‘tents’ completely redefine glamping – stunning, spacious, and ultra cozy. Bandung surprised me. Considering it was meant to be a floating stop between A and B on my Java itinerary, I was taken completely off guard by how cool this city is.
Bandung works best when you don’t rush it. Drift between coffee spots and markets, escape to hills, and enjoy a cuppa up in the cool mountain air. It’s less about ticking things off and more about enjoying a change of pace to the usual chaos on an itinerary through Indonesia.
Choosing where to stay in Bandung depends on how you want the city to feel around you day to day.
Bandung Wetan works well as a first base, keeping you central, connected, and close to museums, cafés, and everyday city life without tipping into chaos. Asia Afrika will suit you if you’re drawn to streets with a bit of character that are made for aimlessly wandering.
If you want to escape the city hustle and bustle, Lembang sits at the other end of the scale. Offering cooler air, greenery, and space to slow down, it’s ideal if Bandung is more of a backdrop than the main event.
