Each winter, gray whales travel over 10,000 miles to the calm lagoons of Guerrero Negro to give birth, and we’ll be right atthe heart of it! Some days, we may see over 100 whales. Mothers proudly introduce their playful calves, and we’ll witness spy-hopping, tail slaps, and maybe even breaching whales. Most magical of all? These majestic beings often approach our boats, seeking gentle interaction.

After three days of whale interactions, we head onwards to Bahía de los Ángeles, a remote gem on the turquoise Sea of Cortez. These biodiverse waters are home to fin whales, humpbacks, dolphins, sea lions, and, if we’re lucky, blue whales, orcas, or even sperm whales.

Day by Day Itinerary

DAY 1: Welcome to Baja

Your Baja adventure begins with a scenic desert road trip that sets the tone for the magic ahead. We’ll meet at Loreto Airport, then pile into our private shuttle and head north across the vast and wild landscapes of Baja California. As the drive unfolds, towering cacti dot the horizon, jagged mountains shift in the distance, and glimpses of the Sea of Cortez sparkle alongside us.

It’s more than a transfer, it’s a chance to sink into the rhythm of Baja, bond with the crew over playlists and snacks, and soak up the raw, untamed beauty of this peninsula. We will stop to have lunch along the way.

Our destination is Guerrero Negro, a quiet coastal village with more than just whales, it’s also home to the world’s largest salt flats, otherworldly in their sparkling vastness, and a sanctuary for thousands of migratory birds that call this biosphere home.

We’ll arrive in the evening, settle into a boutique local hotel, share a welcome dinner, and get to know each other. The anticipation builds, tomorrow, we meet the whales. But tonight, we ground into the slow pace of Baja life, take a deep breath of salty desert air, and open ourselves to the wonder of what’s to come.

DAY 2 + 3: Grey Whale Magic

The next two days will immerse you in one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth, coming face-to-face with the majestic gray whales of Guerrero Negro. After waking up to the cool desert air and a warm breakfast made by our private chef (who also happens to be my amazing Mexican stepmom), we’ll head out early to the calm, protected waters of Laguna Ojo de Liebre. This remote lagoon is a sanctuary where hundreds of gray whales gather each winter to give birth and nurse their calves after a 10,000-mile migration from the Arctic.

Unlike anywhere else in the world, these gentle giants often seek out boats; curious, calm, and sometimes even playful. Mothers have been known to lift their calves up for a closer look at the humans, while others come close enough to make eye contact or even allow a gentle touch. These moments are entirely whale-initiated and deeply humbling.

Each day includes two separate boat trips, each around two to three hours long. Just when you think your heart is full from the last encounter, you’ll head back out for another, each one offering something unique. 

Between trips, we’ll return to shore for a hearty lunch and a break. Evenings bring delicious sunset dinners, warm community games, and time to rest beneath Baja’s star-strewn skies. We will also have some optional workshops and educational talks.

DAY 4: Grey Whales, Salt Flats & Bird Sanctuary

Our final morning in Guerrero Negro begins with a hearty breakfast by our private chef before heading out for one last gray whale encounter. By now, the lagoon feels familiar, but every trip holds something new. A calf might breach beside the boat, or a mother may linger near the surface, offering one last moment of connection.

Back on land, we’ll enjoy lunch and a chance to shower and pack up our belongings before venturing out to explore two of Guerrero Negro’s most unique natural wonders. First, the Guerrero Negro Salt Flats, some of the largest in the world. These vast, white plains shimmer under the sun like snowfields, creating an almost dreamlike landscape. We’ll learn about the salt-harvesting process and take in this striking setting that feels more lunar than terrestrial.

Then we visit El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve’s bird sanctuary, a haven for migratory birds. In winter, this UNESCO-protected wetland comes alive with ospreys, herons, egrets, and more, offering a peaceful change of pace and a glimpse into Baja’s inland biodiversity.

By late afternoon, we hit the road for a scenic two-hour drive to Bahía de los Ángeles. As the sun begins to dip, we’ll wind through desert passes until we reach our quiet beachfront accommodation. There, we’ll unpack, settle in, and share a delicious dinner before gathering for a short chat to prepare for tomorrow’s adventures on the Sea of Cortez.

DAY 5 & 6: Sea of Cortez Ocean Expedition

Our accommodation is magical and right on the beach, and there’s nothing quite like waking up in Bahía de los Ángeles, where the sky lights up in layers of pink, orange, and gold over glassy water. If you’re an early riser or just someone who loves a bit of magic, we highly recommend heading down to the beach by 5:30 am to catch the sunrise in full glory. 

Today, we embark on our first full-day expedition in the Sea of Cortez, one of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet. The area is home to several species of whales, but two in particular are most commonly seen here:

• Fin whales, the second-largest creatures on Earth (just behind the blue whale), are frequent visitors. These massive beings can grow up to 80 feet long and are surprisingly sleek for their size.
  
• Humpback whales, known for their playful, acrobatic nature, are often spotted slapping their tails, breaching dramatically, or waving their giant pectoral fins.
  

If conditions allow, we may also be lucky enough to spot Bryde’s whales, sperm whales, or even the elusive blue whale—the largest animal to have ever existed.

In addition to whales, the bay is home to pods of common and bottlenose dolphins, which often ride the wake of our boats. If the sea is calm, there’s also a chance to snorkel with sea lions at a nearby rookery—an unforgettable experience as they dart and swirl through the water with joyful energy.

We’ll spend 5 to 6 hours on the water. Around 1:00 pm, we return to the hotel for lunch and then have some free time to relax—perfect for a nap, a beach stroll, or journaling your experience.

We will have a bonfire, jam session and dinner under the stars:)

DAY 7: Departure Day

On our final morning together, we rise early beneath the starlit sky of Bahía de los Ángeles. We hit the road, sleepy but satisfied, the sea now a quiet memory behind us.

As the desert landscape slowly brightens around us, we’ll wind through cactus-studded hills and arid mountain passes, soaking in the last glimpses of Baja’s raw beauty. Midway through the journey, we’ll stop for lunch, one last taste of authentic Mexican cuisine before returning to civilization. We aim to arrive in Loreto by 3:00 pm at the latest, dropping each traveler off at their chosen hotel or directly at the airport.

While this is the official end of the trip, we highly recommend spending at least one night in Loreto to relax and reflect. Whether you’re flying out the next day or simply need time to process the magic, this charming town is the perfect place to land softly.

2. Baja Mobula Ray Migration Expedition

• Start/End: La Ventana, Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur

What to Expect

Each spring and early summer, the Sea of Cortez becomes the stage for one of the ocean’s wildest spectacles: the mobula ray migration. Tens of thousands of rays gather in huge “fevers,” moving like shifting shadows from above and like a living, pulsing cloud beneath the surface. Sometimes orcas sweep through the schools, sending mobulas scattering and leaping into the air in silver flashes – a surreal explosion of motion you’ll never forget.

But this expedition isn’t just about the wildlife. It’s about settling into the rhythm of Baja: sunrise coffees on the beach, long days on the water with local captains, and slow evenings around the fire. Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in La Ventana – Welcome Dinner

Our trip begins in La Ventana, a 45-minute drive from La Paz (LAP) airport or two hour drive from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).

Perched on the shores of the Sea of Cortez, our very special accommodation is just a short walk from the beach and is perfectly positioned to take advantage of where the mobula rays gather each year.

After settling into our rooms, we gather for a welcome feast prepared by Norma, our artisanal chef whose inspired Mexican cuisine makes everyone feel at home. Around our first shared meal, we’ll meet the team, get to know one another, and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2-5: Deep Dive Days in the Sea of Cortez

The day begins early with fresh coffee and breakfast prepared by Norma as the rising sun paints the Sea of Cortez in shades of gold and pink. Then we head out onto the water…

Our mission is simple: find the mobulas!

These restless schools move constantly through the bay, following currents rich in plankton. When we locate them, we approach carefully and slip quietly into the water to snorkel alongside the swirling formations.

No two days are ever the same… currents shift, wildlife moves, and the ocean reveals its surprises in its own time.

Some days, we may find ourselves surrounded by vast fevers of mobulas, their wings flashing silver beneath the sun. Other days, they glide quietly beneath the surface, lifting into graceful leaps that feel like the heartbeat of the sea.

Our guides ensure all encounters are respectful and ethical, keeping wildlife interactions calm and regulated while allowing the magic of the ocean to unfold naturally.

Lunch is enjoyed out on the water before returning to shore for rest and relaxation.

Back at the house, Norma works her culinary magic. Perhaps fresh ceviche from the day’s catch, handmade enchiladas, slow-simmered mole, warm tortillas, and vibrant salsas. Her cooking is deeply rooted in tradition, and every meal feels like being welcomed into a Mexican family home.

Enjoy some downtime swimming in our private pool, stretching in the garden or relaxing with a good book in the hammocks. Our accommodation is spacious and right next to the beach, so a walk or run is never far away!

Dinner is served with sunset, and evenings close with bonfires, laughter, and the immense Baja night sky glittering overhead.

Day 6: Final morning – departure

On our final morning together, we share one last breakfast as the sun rises over the Sea of Cortez.

We will drop off guests at La Paz airport for midday, plenty of time before the afternoon flights. If you are flying out of San Cabos, we can arrange a shuttle with a reliable driver for an extra charge.
