Since this time I have owned a handful of high quality Páramo jackets and can safely say that they last for years, and also that they are still churning out top quality gear in 2025 (unlike a certain outdoor brand named after an Argentine mountain range).

As we said, this is a softshell outdoor jacket designed for camping, hiking and urban wear (I used to wear my Paramo’s to school). It’s rain and wind resistant while having some breathability making it an ideal shoulder season jacket.

Design & Fit
The Páramo Velez Jacket is available in various colors and sizes, catering to both men and women. Its fit is somewhere between slim and relaxed, offering enough freedom of movement without feeling baggy – this means that aesthetically it will suit some body types more than others.
It’s designed with outdoor enthusiasts in mind, meaning you get longer sleeves, an extended back hem, and an adjustable hood for better coverage when the rough weather comes in.
For those used to Gore-Tex hard shells, the Velez should feel softer and more flexible, making it a lot more comfortable for prolonged wear.
Material & Construction
The Velez uses Nikwax Analogy fabric, a membrane-free waterproof system that basically mimics the action of animal fur — pushing moisture away from the body while maintaining insulation. Unlike Gore-Tex though, it doesn’t rely on plastic-based laminates, making it a more sustainable and eco-friendly choice (as well as more comfortable to wear).
Additionally, the jacket is PFC-free, meaning it avoids harmful perfluorinated compounds often found in waterproof clothing.
Weight & Packability
At around 700g (1.5 lbs), the Velez is not the lightest soft shell out there, but it is significantly lighter than many waterproof hard shells. While it’s not as compact as ultralight rain jackets, it packs down reasonably well and fits comfortably in a rucksack.

Waterproofing & Weather Resistance
What is Nikwax?
Nikwax Analogy doesn’t use the traditional waterproof membrane found in Gore-Tex jackets. Instead, it employs something called ‘a pump liner’ that actively moves moisture away from the body, keeping you dry from both rain and sweat.
Real-World Performance
- Rain: The Velez holds up well in extended rain showers, although a reproofing treatment is necessary over time.
- Snow: Works well as an insulating mid-layer under a shell or by itself in light snowfall.
- Wind: Excellent wind resistance, making it ideal for mountain and coastal hikes.
Personally, I prefer Nikwax to Gortex as its more comfy to wear and eco-friendly although opinions differ as to which offers better long term weather resistance.
Breathability & Ventilation
One of the biggest advantages of the Velez is superior breathability compared to Gore-Tex shells. It prevents that sweaty, clammy feeling, even during intense activity. As somebody who generates a lot of body heat and gets sweaty, I find Gore-tex and hardshells are usually not nice to wear so I am loving the Nikwax and breathability of the Velez.
The jacket also features useful pit zips and chest vents, which allow for extra airflow, keeping you cool when needed.
Comfort & Mobility
The soft, flexible fabric of the Velez means better freedom of movement compared to stiff waterproof shells. Whether you are going out hiking, climbing, or trekking, you won’t feel too restricted.
It also performs well in casual wear, making it a highly versatile option for travel or urban environments. Rest assured you will blend seamlessly well into any UK town or city wearing this.
Warmth & Layering
The Paramo Velez provides a pretty solid warmth offering for its weight, making it ideal for cold and damp conditions. However, in sub-zero temperatures, layering with a fleece or insulated mid-layer is highly recommended as this is not a winter/extreme weather jacket.
Style & Aesthetics
Unlike many technical jackets, the Velez looks cool. It has a sleek and understated design that makes it suitable for urban wear as well. If you like gear that looks as good in the mountains as it does on city streets then this is a seriously bloody strong contender as it can be dressed with pretty much anything and will still look the business.

Durability & Longevity – Is It Worth the Investment?

Fabric Strength & Resistance to Wear
The robust construction and high quality materials used, makes the Velez highly durable. After months of use, mine is showing no wear, even with abrasion from backpacks and terrain. Previous Paramo jackets I have owned or borrowed have lasted for years. This is good quality gear people.
Maintenance & Care Tips
To maintain water resistance, the jacket might appreciate the occasional reproofing with Nikwax TX.Direct and I have been in the habit of reproofing my jackets for the last decade or more. However, there is some diversity of thought here – the brands official stated position is that this is not especially necessary, and that their Nikwax products require only the same level of care as other non PFAS laden jacket.
If you do want to reproof, then the good news is that unlike Gore-Tex, you can wash and reproof it at home without compromising performance so happy days! There are plenty of YouTube tutorials that will show you how to do this.
Recycle and Resale Scheme
Páramo truly is a leader in sustainable manufacturing. To reduce waste and promote circular fashion, the brand has even gone as far as to implement two key initiatives: the Páramo Recycling Scheme and the Páramo Resale Scheme.
The Páramo Recycling Scheme invites customers to return their old or worn-out Páramo garments, regardless of their condition. In exchange for this will customers receive a discount on new purchases. The returned items are either refurbished for reuse or responsibly recycled to minimise environmental impact.
Through its Resale Scheme, Páramo refurbishes and resells high-quality second-hand garments. This initiative extends the lifespan of products.

Paramo Velez vs. Arc’teryx Beta
The Arc’teryx Beta is a premium, all-round hardshell jacket that shines when it comes to technical performance. Offering a lightweight yet highly durable Gore-Tex construction, the Beta packs in exceptional waterproofing and breathability. As such its a pretty solid choice for hikers, climbers, and general outdoor enthusiasts who need reliable protection in harsh conditions.
However, while the Beta offers outstanding weather resistance, its Gore-Tex fabric can feel less breathable during high-output activities, requiring strategic layering to manage moisture effectively.
The Beta is also a bit more expensive.
Paramo Velez vs. Patagonia Torrentshell
A decent Patagonia jacket equivalent to the Paramo Velez would be the Patagonia Torrentshell. While not as breathable as the Velez, this jacket offers long-lasting waterproofing with a focus on durability and comfort.
It’s a slightly more budget-friendly and versatile option for those looking for weather protection in wet conditions, though it does not have the same moisture-wicking and insulation features as the Velez. Note, Patagonia have historically been one of my favourite jacket brands although they do not seem to last quote as long as they used to
Final Verdict – Is the Paramo Velez Jacket Worth It?
The Paramo Velez Jacket is a unique hybrid piece that packs breathability, weather resistance, and eco-friendly technology all into one single jacket designed for serious outdoor enthusiasts. If you’re a hiker, a trekker, or an all-weather adventurer looking for a jacket that keeps you dry without the clammy feel of traditional waterproofs, this could well be your new go-to.
Its Nikwax Analogy fabric offers impressive moisture management and the ventilation zips and ergonomic design ensure comfort even during high-energy activities. That said, it does require regular reproofing, and it’s not as compact as ultralight shells. The price will also deter some of you as $350+ is a lot to spend on a single jacket.
