Travellers Oasis manages to pull off something most hostels never quite figure out: it’s genuinely social without turning every night into a mandatory pub crawl. If you’re looking for somewhere you can meet people, relax by the pool and still get a decent night’s sleep, this is probably the best all-round hostel in Cairns.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Social Without the Hangover – The pool, BBQ area and communal kitchens make it easy to meet people, but the vibe is much more laid-back than some of Cairns’ bigger party hostels.
• Spotlessly Clean – The place is exceptionally well looked after, and it shows. You won’t be playing the usual backpacker game of “I wonder what that stain is.”
• It Actually Feels Like Home – Between the tropical gardens, outdoor chill-out spaces and well-equipped kitchens, it’s the kind of place where travellers often end up extending their stay by “just a couple more nights.”

What really makes Travellers Oasis stand out is the balance. It’s social without being chaotic, comfortable without being flashy and close to town without having drunk people wandering through reception at stupid o’clock every morning.

The kitchens deserve a special mention too. There are three of them, they’re properly equipped and, miracle of miracles, you can usually find enough space to cook without getting into a passive-aggressive frying pan dispute with another backpacker.

It’s only a short walk from Cairns city centre, putting you close to all the backpacker essentials: reef tours, cheap eats, cold beers and people trying to convince you to extend your stay by another week.

If you’re only staying in one hostel in Cairns, make it this one.

2. Mad Monkey Jungle – Best Party Hostel

• Best for: Backpackers who came to Cairns for the reef and accidentally stayed for the parties
• Highlights: Legendary on-site bar, huge pool, nightly events and one of the biggest social scenes in town
• Dorms from: $27
• Location: Central Cairns

Some hostels try to strike a balance between social and chill. Mad Monkey Jungle isn’t particularly interested in balance.

If you’re looking to meet people, go out, come back, sit around the pool the next day discussing the previous night’s events and then do it all again, you’ll probably have a great time here.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• It’s Ridiculously Social – If you arrive not knowing anybody, I wouldn’t expect that problem to last very long.
• The Facilities Are Actually Decent – It’s not one of those party hostels where everything else gets neglected. There’s a pool, a good kitchen, air-conditioned rooms and plenty of communal space.
• You’re Right in the Action – Whether you’re heading to the reef, the lagoon or the pub, you’re not far from it.

What I like about Mad Monkey Jungle is that it knows exactly what it is. Nobody’s pretending this is a wellness retreat. You’re here for the atmosphere and the people, and the hostel leans into that unapologetically.

That said, if your idea of a good evening is a book, a cup of tea and being asleep before 10 pm, there are better options in Cairns. If your idea of a good evening starts with “I’ll just have one drink”, then this place may be dangerously appealing.

3. Mad Monkey Waterfront – Best Location

• Best for: Backpackers who want to be in the middle of the action
• Highlights: Esplanade location, free breakfast, regular BBQs and a social atmosphere

• Location: Cairns Esplanade

I’ll happily stay a bit further out if it saves me some cash, but Mad Monkey Waterfront is one of those places where the location is hard to argue with.

The lagoon is across the road, the Night Markets are a couple of minutes away, and pretty much everything else in Cairns is within walking distance. After a few days of tropical heat, not having to trek across town starts to feel like a very good deal.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• The Location is Seriously Good – You can walk pretty much everywhere you’d want to go in Cairns.
• Free Breakfast – Backpackers love free food. This is a scientific fact.
• Easy to Meet People – It’s social without feeling chaotic, and the smaller size makes it easy to get chatting with other travellers.

The hostel itself is clean, comfortable and surprisingly chilled considering how central it is. There’s a good kitchen, decent communal spaces and regular events if you’re looking to be social.

Would I stay here purely for the hostel? Probably not. Would I stay here because I can roll out of bed and be at the lagoon in two minutes? Absolutely.

If location matters to you, this is about as good as it gets in Cairns.

4. Mumma’s Hostel Cairns – Best Budget Hostel

• Best for: Backpackers who’d rather spend their money on reef trips than accommodation
• Highlights: Free breakfast, privacy curtains, swimming pool and a relaxed atmosphere

• Location: Central Cairns

Budget hostels can be a bit of a lottery. Sometimes you find a bargain. Sometimes you find a mattress that appears to have survived several historical events.

Thankfully, Mumma’s falls firmly into the first category. Backpacking Australia can do some pretty alarming things to your bank balance, so any hostel helping to slow the bleeding deserves a mention.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Excellent Value for Money – You get a lot more than you’d expect for the price, including free breakfast every morning.
• The Beds Are Actually Thoughtful – Curtains, power points and reading lights make a surprising difference when you’re sharing a room with strangers.
• Relaxed Without Being Boring – It’s social enough to meet people, but doesn’t feel like a 24-hour party.

What I like about Mumma’s is that it focuses on the things backpackers actually care about. The beds are comfortable, the facilities are clean, there’s a pool for escaping the Cairns heat, and the communal areas make it easy to hang out without feeling like you’re being herded into organised fun.

The location doesn’t hurt either. You’re within easy walking distance of the lagoon, supermarkets, bars and restaurants, which means less money spent on transport and more money available for whatever adventure you’ve got planned next.

And honestly, any hostel that offers free breakfast deserves at least a little respect. Backpackers love free food. It’s one of the few universal truths left in the world.

5. Summer House Cairns – Best Hostel for Longer Stays

• Best for: Backpackers who want their hostel to be part of the trip
• Highlights: Huge pool, free activities, free shuttle bus and resort-style facilities
• Dorms from: $24
• Private rooms from: $72
• Location: North Cairns

Summer House is one of those hostels where people seem to spend a lot of time actually hanging around the hostel.

I know why. There’s a huge pool, loads of outdoor space and always something going on. Grab a coffee, find somewhere to sit, and chances are somebody will start chatting to you before long, whether you wanted them to or not.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Loads of Stuff Going On – Yoga, painting sessions, trivia nights, volleyball and plenty more if sitting still isn’t really your thing.
• The Pool is Worth Its Weight in Gold – Cairns gets properly hot, and having somewhere to cool off after a day out makes a big difference.
• The Free Shuttle – It might not sound exciting, but you’ll appreciate it when you’re tired, sunburnt and can’t be bothered walking back into town.

Honestly, I can see how people end up extending their stay here. You book a few nights, spend a day by the pool, discover there’s a bar, and suddenly your carefully planned itinerary starts looking a bit optimistic.

I also quite like that it’s a little outside the centre. Some people won’t agree, but it means the place feels a bit more relaxed and spacious than some of the hostels right in town. The free shuttle sorts out the transport issue anyway.

And look, I’m not saying the $5 jugs should influence your decision. I’m just saying they deserve to be entered into evidence.

Cairns has a funny habit of keeping people around longer than they planned. Plenty of backpackers arrive thinking they’ll spend a couple of days here before heading further up or down the coast, only to realise a week has somehow disappeared.

Maybe it’s the reef. Maybe it’s the weather. Maybe it’s the fact that every second person you meet seems to have a new recommendation for somewhere to go, something to do or a pub you apparently have to visit.
