1. Old Town – Best Place for First-Timers
Old Town is one of the easiest places to base yourself if it’s your first time in San Diego, mostly because it sits in a convenient spot between Downtown and the coast.
The neighborhood leans historic and tourist-friendly, with museums, old adobe buildings, and a steady stream of restaurants serving Mexican food; some of it is good, some of it less so (unless you’re visiting from outside North America, in which case it’ll all seem good). The last time I was there, I had a great time sitting and watching people dance to the live Mexican music.

Pacific Shores Inn – Top Budget Hotel Pick (Our Most Recent Stay)
I have to be honest: Pacific Shores Inn looks a little grungy from the outside and yes, it’s basically a motel. But before you start wondering why I sent you here, take a few dozen steps west and you’ll realize you’re basically on the boardwalk without paying boardwalk prices. It’s also on the quieter end of PB, which is either a bonus (sleep) or a drawback (less chaos outside your door). The room itself was clean and felt surprisingly modern, especially for what it cost.
Pacific Terrace Hotel – Top Splurge Hotel Pick
If you’re going to spend more money in PB, spend it on the stuff you can’t fake: beachfront access and the ability to live in flip-flops for 48 straight hours. Pacific Terrace sits right on the sand with an ocean-view pool and hot tub, plus genuinely useful extras like complimentary bike rentals and beach gear (chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards).
ITH Beach Bungalow Surf Hostel – Top Hostel Pick
It’s like, how much more beachy could this be? And the answer is none. None more beachy.
