The communal areas are meticulously maintained and absolutely gorgeous.

• Nightly Family Dinners: The nightly Sri Lankan banquets are the real deal and the easiest way to find a crew without the awkward small talk.
• Bougie on a Budget: You get an infinity pool overlooking rice paddies and outdoor showers…all on a backpacker budget? Flashpackers rejoice.
• Dreamy views: It’s a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride from central Sigiriya, which means you’re trading noisy traffic for peacocks and views of the cultural triangle.

The food is exceptional, and the overall atmosphere is super chill. Daily group trips to explore Sigiriya’s sights are a great way to dive into the social scene and meet new people. If you prefer a slower pace, there are also relaxing chill-out spots and hammocks set in a seriously stunning backdrop. Because the villa is surrounded by nature, wild elephants occasionally wander the nearby fields at night. It’s the wild experience you absolutely want when rocking up in Sigirya.

2. Tomorrowland Hostel: Best for an Epic Location

Situated in the breathtaking Sri Lankan mountains, this hostel is something special for travellers. Away from the hustle and bustle of overrated Ella, the party hostel is the real reason we travel. The entire atmosphere of this hostel is what’s the rush, dude. Hared cooking and lessons, insane DJ nights, and competitive Karram games.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Insane Views: You’re high enough up that the morning mist makes you feel like you’re in a cloud, far away from civilisation.
• The Vibe: It’s a bit weird, a bit trippy, and has its own DJ booth. If you’re tired of the cookie-cutter ‘live, laugh, travel’ hostel decor, this place actually has some character (with a crowd to match).
• The Staff are Legends: The staff handles the logistics of being so high up in Ella’s hills. They’ll shuttle you into town and guide you to the peaks so you don’t have to pretend to know where you’re going.

On the nights that live music isn’t hosted, you can all gather around the fire pit in the beer garden. Here, you can stay up until the early hours of the morning sipping drinks and making memories with people from all walks of life. Just watch out for the rooftop during the day – it gets roasting hot. For a real outdoor experience, opt for a private tent and drift off under the stars.

Hangten SurfSkate Hostel is a true labour of love, and it’s obvious from the moment you arrive. If you’re in Arugam Bay for the surf, this place will feel like your new home. The vibes are spot on – super social and welcoming – attracting the best kind of people. And get this: there’s a full-on skate park in the backyard! Perfect for pros or newbies like myself who will try everything at least once 😉

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Surf Orientated: The staff here are surfers; they know which break is working and will bundle you into a tuk-tuk with a board rack before the sun even thinks about coming up.
• Skateboarding is the New Small Talk: Having a skate bowl in the middle of the hostel is a genius move. It completely kills the usual ‘where are you from’ chats because everyone is too busy watching someone land (or eat it) in the bowl.
• Local Legends: The owner, Siraj, and the crew are the reason people end up extending for three weeks. You’ll soon feel part of the furniture.

The staff are heaven sent, always on hand to lend a hand or share local tips. The place is impeccably clean, with fantastic facilities for surf enthusiasts. The communal areas are perfect for hanging out and meeting new friends. Plus, the family dinners and quiz nights really cement the community vibes that Hangten SurfSkate is all about.

4. Barefoot Backpackers Hostel, Hiriketiya Beach: Best For Solo Travellers

• Best for: Solo travellers that ACTUALLY want to form connections
• Highlights: Daily volleyball, family dinners, sunset ‘rock’ sessions

Barefoot Backpackers Hostel run a tight ship. They have a strict solo travellers only rule – meaning you’ll literally be turned away if you rock up with mates. Terrible for groups, but an absolute gold mine for solo travellers who want to escape the cliquey vibe that often comes with hostels. You’re pretty much guaranteed to check out with more mates than you came with (which is 0 – see above for the rules!!)

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Forced Friendships (In a Good Way): Since they ban groups and couples, you don’t have to worry about breaking into a tight-knit circle of besties. Everyone is in the same ‘please talk to me’ boat.
• Tons of Activities: Days are filled with daily volleyball games, group sunset walks to the ‘secret’ rock, and family-style rice and curry that guests say is some of the best in town. It’s hard to be bored here.
• A Home Away From Home: From the crowd and staff, to the resident dog, it’s hard to check out here. It feels more like a shared villa where people actually hang out in the garden than a hostel where people hide in their dorms.

During the high season, this place truly comes alive with a packed schedule of activities in their spacious common area and sea-view garden. Expect social dinners, beach volleyball tournaments, and a whole lot more. If you’re after a vibrant, social atmosphere, this is your spot.

5. Wild Bee Hostel: Best for Chill Vibes

• Highlights: Killer breakfasts, mountain views, wicked social space

If Wild Bee Hostel had to be summed up in three words, it would be boutique-meets-backpacker. It’s a design-led eco-hostel that feels more like a mountain lodge than your usual grimey affair. Chuck your backpack under your bunk and you might even be able to forget your backpacker roots! Situated within the higher landscapes of Ella, you’ll have great views of the mountains that might just accidentally keep you in Ella longer than you planned. You’ll be far enough away from the main centre to have moments of peace but Tuk-Tuks are available to take you into the town, so you won’t feel isolated.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• View for Days: You’re high enough up that the train whistles and town noise are just background music. It’s the kind of view that makes you realize why you spent 10 hours on a sweaty train to get here.
• Free Shuttles: Sometimes it’s nice to stretch your legs, but the hill to get up to the hostel is a killer. Luckily, free shuttles stop you from keeling over when you want to get into town.
• Low-Pressure Socialising: It’s a super chill social spot. You’ll meet people in the lounge nets or over breakfast, but nobody is forcing a drinking game on you at noon.

The staff are a saviour for any Ella-related queries you have. From sorting tours, breakfast spots and hidden gems, the staff will be sure to sprinkle you in their Ella wisdom. Another unique aspect of this hostel is the outdoor space with beanbags and sky beds to enjoy the unobstructed night skies. Spending your evenings sharing stories while stargazing? Sounds like pure bliss to me.

6. Satori Beach Hostel: Best for Beach Vibes

Satori Beach Hostel in Mirissa stakes its claim as the only beachfront spot in town, and it’s clear why it’s a backpacker favourite. • Events & Nightlife: They organise boat parties and group outings to local bars like The Doctor’s House.
• The Balcony Views: Most dorms feature balconies overlooking the ocean. It’s resort-level views on a backpacker budget.

Beyond the views, the bathrooms are squeaky clean, and the air conditioning is solid – which, of course, is essential. The staff are absolute legends: funny, friendly, and always ready with super cool recommendations for the best food and drinks around. Saturday nights are the social peak, but the fun stay around all week with daily events that bring everyone together. All the facilities are wrapped up in that effortlessly cool boho-chic style that makes the dorms feel properly cosy.

The family dinners are where it really comes alive, bringing backpackers together over great food. Between you and me, Sri Lankan food is the way to my heart anyway. 8. YoYo Surf Hostel: Best for Surfing

If you came to Sri Lanka to surf, find a crew, and maybe occasionally send an email so you don’t run out of money, YoYo Surf Hostel is the place for you. It’s a locally owned, family-run spot that’s managed to dodge the sterile hostel chain’ vibe in lieu of something a little more real.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Family Vibes (Literally): The owner, Gee, runs the place with his family. It’s the kind of spot where they’ll help you find a doctor, fix a broken surfboard, or find late-night kottu without it feeling transactional.
• Work/Surf Balance: They’ve got dedicated power stations and beanbags for digital nomads. The WiFi is surprisingly stable for a jungle-adjacent hostel, so you can smash those tasks out before returning to the important stuff (surfing, duh).

The property is designed around a massive, open-air communal hub that functions as the hostel’s heart and soul. At its centre sits a pool table that sees nearly constant action, surrounded by a lounge area filled with beanbags, sofas, and board games. The hostel’s living room is where the daily transition from surf mode to social mode happens effortlessly.

Sri Lanka, for how georgraphically small it is, is (metephorically) big, wide and bloody beautiful. Sticking to one place would be an absolute disservice to all of the nooks and crannies that’ll surprise you.
