Main Beach
Hiriketiya is tiny, but it still has a central hub that draws in most of the action. Enter: Main Beach. Technically, it’s just called ‘Hiriketiya Beach’, and many of the neighbourhoods on this list seem to blend with one another.
Batigama / Dickwella Beach
Just west of Hiriketiya’s main curve, Batigama and Dickwella Beach are separate beachfronts offering a wide stretch of sand with a more local feel. The area is busier, but not touristy, which makes it seem a bit more authentically local.
Inland of Main Beach
Just a few minutes inland from Hiriketiya’s shoreline and Main Beach, and suddenly the vibe shifts. Busy beach bars turn to quiet jungle roads lined with boutique hotels and cottage rentals. This is where you’ll find accommodations with secret gardens and views overlooking the bay.
East of Main Beach

If you make Hiriketiya part of your Sri Lanka backpacking trip (and you definitely should), then this will be where you spend most of your time.
This curved bay is tailor-made for both beginner and intermediate surfers, with surf schools lining the sand. You’ll meet a mix of laid-back locals, long-term expats running yoga studios and smoothie bars, and first-time travellers who come for a few days and end up staying for weeks. Accommodations are simple yet high-quality, considering they’re so affordable. Think beachfront hostels, boutique hotels and a few self-catering vacation rentals without breaking the bank.

This absolute bargain is right on the beach, so you’re paying super cheap prices for direct beachfront access, what a steal! Mahee is the name of the host, and it’s also the Sanskrit word for “great” which describes exactly what sort of host she is! You can find top hospitality here. Mahee offers laundry services and even massages. The rooms are clean, and you can throw in a fruity breakfast for $5, plus dinner too if you wish.
Bappa’s Place | Best Hostel
For the budget travellers among us, Bappa’s Place is one of the most affordable places to stay. It’s a two-minute walk from the beach, featuring its own garden and guest rooms equipped with coffee machines and air-conditioning. Some rooms even have their own terrace. In the garden, you’ll find other travellers chatting over shared experiences. For those wanting a beachside base with a social buzz and a low price tag, Bappa’s Place is the one.
Room Five at The Yard Hiriketiya | Best Boutique Hotel
The Yard feels like it was designed for those who appreciate the little details. It’s located a short walk from the main beachfront and has its own little backyard. Room Five is a ground-floor, double suite that blends modern design with rustic island charm. It feels homey and stylish, and is just far away enough from the beach to feel like a hidden sanctuary. The kitchen is shared, making it a great place to meet other travellers.
2. Batigama / Dickwella Beach – Best Place to Stay on a Budget
Just west of Hiriketiya’s main curve, Batigama and Dickwella Beach are separate beachfronts offering a wide stretch of sand with a more local feel. The area is busier, but not touristy, which makes it seem a bit more authentically local. It’s popular with backpackers and budget travellers, since the guesthouses, apartments and villa rentals around here are even cheaper than those right on the Main Beach of Hiriketiya.
You’ll find a lot of local fishermen living around here, going about everyday Sri Lankan life. It’s the perfect base for swimming, long walks on the beach, and being close enough to the action without paying beachfront prices. A spot well worth adding to your Sri Lanka itinerary.

For those who value a bit of privacy, King CoCo House feels like stepping into a secret beachside hideaway. The apartments are bright and airy, with simple interiors that really speak to the laid-back vibe of Dickwella. It’s ideal if you want your own kitchen and space to spread out, while still being a few steps from the beach.
2-Bed Villa near Turtle Beach | Best Villa
Waking up in this villa feels like being a part of the local community itself. It’s a private house with a large garden and a covered indoor/outdoor living area that really blends modern interiors with Sri Lankan style. Love a bit of luxury on a budget! And this place certainly provides that. Breakfast isn’t included in the cheapest room, but for $4 more they’ll chuck in a typically Sri Lankan fruit platter with some pancakes on the side. It was comfy, clean, and had hot water – great for washing yourself after a day on the waves. Then you can even do your laundry here. Great price, great amenities, great place.
Pranaya Hiriketiya | Best Hostel
Pranayama is the kind of hostel that will make anyone reconsider their life choices and think about joining the backpacker lifestyle. It’s set inland among the palm trees, and has a laid-back, earthy feel where community is easily formed between guests. The dorms are simple yet clean, making this a favourite among backpackers and digital nomads who want quiet nights but still be a quick tuk-tuk from the action.
Silu Cottage with Garden | Best Cottage
Minimalists would go crazy for the impeccable design of Silu Cottage. Tucked in what feels like a secret nook of the jungle, mornings here begin on the terrace with coffee and birdsong. The house itself is simple and fitted with exquisite wooden furniture and bespoke pieces. A cheap private room just 10 minutes from the beach? Yeah, I’m in. Imaa Freedom House lives up to its name, as you have the freedom to wake early and hit the waves, then come back to a friendly family who serve up great Sri Lankan breakfasts. A winning formula. It’s basic, but I’m a fan.
Peak House Hiriketiya | Best Boutique Hotel
Understated and tucked away in the jungle, Peak House feels like a homey Sri Lankan house perched just above the action, allowing for a bit more privacy and breathing space while still being just steps from the lively east side. Set in a traditional local home, the design is clean and simple with warm Sri Lankan touches. Spend some time dining at the outdoor dining area and exploring the surrounding gardens.

This penthouse is pure indulgence with a front-row view of the ocean.
