Sure, it’s famous for the iconic sardine run, but with beautiful beaches, marinelife and an island that operates solely on island time, it’s easy to get swept up in sloooooowing down.
The hostels here range from social party spots to quiet, no-fuss bases depending on what you’re after, and there are decent options across the board without having to blow your budget.

1. Chief Mau Moalboal Cebu: Best Overall Hostel

This hostel puts you within a minute of the beach where the iconic Sardine Run takes place. Sun, sand, sardines, more sun. You know the drill. The location also drops you right by Moalboal’s best nightlife spots, so your schedule here might realistically involve sunrise yoga on the beach and then dancing until the sun comes back around. Worse ways to spend a week.

Dorms are air-conditioned with hot and cold rain showers. The cold shower option sounds rough until Moalboal’s summer heat gets involved, at which point you’ll be switching it on voluntarily. There’s an on-site bar and restaurant to keep yourself fuelled throughout the day and hydrated – trust me, the heat here is NO joke. The hostel has a dedicated social area for meeting other travellers, plus an excursion called the “ultimate canoeing trip,” which covers canoeing, island hopping, and sharks. Consider me sold.
2. MoHo Hostel: Best for Solo Travellers

MoHo is one of those hostels that makes solo travel feel easy. The common areas are built for actually meeting people rather than just sitting near them, the staff are genuinely welcoming, and the daily free drinks from 8pm do A LOT of the social heavy lifting. If you’re looking for a spot where friend-making is on easy mode, you’ve certainly come to the right place.
Thursday night is where MoHo really earns its reputation. The trivia and music quiz gets properly competitive and runs rowdy until the early hours. If that sounds like your kind of evening, you’re in the right place. If it doesn’t, maybe look elsewhere for your Thursday night.

Dorms are a cut above the standard too. Memory foam mattresses, privacy curtains, personal lights, and USB ports in every bunk. Hot and cold showers with solid water pressure, and there’s enough of them dotted around that you never have to wait for a post-beach shower. For a fun, social and clean spot, MoHo ticks all the boxes.
3. Crazy Bears Hostel: Best for Social Vibes

- Best for: Social travellers and backpackers looking for organised excursions
- Highlights: Large social area, on-site bar, towels and lockers included

- Location: Panagsama Beach, Moalboal, Cebu
Crazy Bears is a proper social hostel that actually delivers on the promise. The bar area is a good hang, the guests are friendly, and once the music wraps up at 11pm the beds are comfortable enough that a decent night’s sleep is on the table. It’s a pretty small hostel, making meeting people easy peasy as faces soon become familiar. Tours and snorkelling gear can be booked and rented through the front desk, and the staff are warm and helpful and genuinely make the whole place feel super chilled out.

The location is hard to argue with either. Some of Moalboal’s best restaurants and bars are within a five-minute walk, so you’re never far from a good meal or a cold beer after a day in the water. If you’re an avid foodie, listen up. Some of Moalboal’s greatest restaurants and bars are just a 5-minute walk away, so you can taste authentic Filipino cuisine all day long. Shoutout to Hungry Monkeys – my fav restaurant everrr!
4. Maayong Hostel: Best for Central Location

- Best for: Solo travellers, couples, backpackers wanting room options beyond a standard dorm
- Highlights: Native bungalows with private outdoor showers, communal lounge with hammocks and beanbags, tour desk on-site
- Dorms from: $15
- Private rooms from: $65
- Location: Panagsama Road, Moalboal, Cebu
Maayong is the kind of place that feels immediately comfortable, and the location makes everything easier. Panagsama Beach is a three-minute walk, the sardine run and turtles are right there, and the main strip of bars and restaurants is two minutes in the other direction. You’re not schlepping anywhere.

- Right by the beach
- 10/10 food dished up
The on-site bar and restaurant mean you don’t even have to leave if you don’t want to, and the communal lounge with hammocks and beanbags is where you’ll end up spending more time than planned. Staff are warm and helpful, whether that’s pointing you toward the best food nearby or sorting out a tour through the desk. The room options here are worth knowing about. The 12-bed mixed dorm has privacy curtains, personal lockers, and hot and cold showers, whilst the native bungalows are a step up, with private outdoor tropical showers and a terrace hammock looking out over the garden. There are plenty of options depending on how social you’re feeling.
5. Ohlala Hostel Moalboal: Best for Chill Vibes
- Price tier: $
- Best for: Travellers after a quiet, chill base in Moalboal
- Highlights: Intimate 10-bed hostel, air-conditioned rooms with hot showers, tour desk for excursions and gear rental, fast Wi-Fi throughout
- Dorms from: $9

- Location: Panagsama Road, Moalboal, Cebu
Ohlala is small, quiet, and feels more like staying at a mate’s place than a hostel. There are beds for ten people across the dorms and private rooms, which keep things intimate enough that you’re not navigating a revolving door of strangers every night. If you’re after a party, Panagsama’s bars are a short walk away. If you’re after a proper reset after a full day in the water, you’ve found your spot.

Dorm beds come with privacy curtains and individual storage, so the room stays livable even when it’s at capacity. Air con and hot showers throughout, fast Wi-Fi across the whole property, and the staff are solid at sorting you out with whatever you need, whether that’s canyoneering at Kawasan Falls, snorkel gear for the Sardine Run, or just a good restaurant recommendation. Panagsama Beach is five minutes on foot, and the best restaurants and cafes in the area are right on the doorstep. It’s not going to win any awards for its social scene, but what it does well is give you a clean, comfortable, low-key base to come back to.

Moalboal’s hostel scene is small but solid. Most options sit along Panagsama Road within walking distance of the beach, the sardine run, and the main strip, so location rarely needs to be a dealbreaker.
For most travellers, Chief Mau is the strongest all-round pick: well-located, social without being overwhelming, and good value for what you get. Backpackers in search of the party will be happiest at MoHo, especially if there’s a Thursday in your itinerary.
