The Airport Residential Area is less industrial than it sounds. Sure, the area around an airport is usually not the ideal place to find accommodation, but in this city, it kind of is.
Labone
Labone is like that chill, artsy friend who doesn’t know what time of day it is – but in the most complimentary way possible. It’s relaxed and culturally interesting, perfect for families, creatives, or anyone looking for a low-key, budget-friendly neighbourhood.
Cantonments
Cantonments is polished, modern, and secure. It’s mostly populated by diplomats, wealthy ex-pats, and luxury travellers. This is where you’ll find the city’s embassies, gated communities, and high-end accommodations ranging from five-star hotels to serviced apartments.
East Legon
East Legon is trendy, dynamic, and quintessentially Ghanaian. It’s known for being the neighbourhood where all the local Ghanaians who have lived abroad return to when they move back to Accra.
Osu
Consider Osu the ‘West End’ of Accra. It’s just a few miles from the city’s CBD and showcases a good mix of 17th-century buildings and modern skyscrapers. The sounds, smells, and sights around here are enough to make you feel totally immersed in the local culture.
Accra is one of those cities where every neighbourhood has its own personality. I really mean it when I say that even neighbourhoods that border on one another can have a totally different vibe and offer something unique. It’s one of my favourite places to visit in Ghana.
It might not sound so appealing, but the Airport Residential Area is one of the most central and luxurious neighbourhoods in the city. It’s a surprisingly upscale area filled with high-end hotels, chic apartments, and great restaurants. It’s quiet and green and perfect for first-time visitors, business travellers, and visitors in transit.
Next up, Labone is an artsy and laid-back area ideal for creatives and families. It’s also home to some incredibly well-priced accommodations. Combining art galleries, lush streets, and a friendly, small neighbourhood, this is one of the best places for budget-conscious travellers to stay in Accra. If you’re into travelling off the beaten path, this place is a vibe.
Then there are the Cantonments. Pretty much the VIPs of Accra neighbourhoods. It’s modern, secure, and particularly popular with expat families and anyone looking for a more cosmopolitan experience.
You know those places where the vibes are just always high? East Legon is a trendy hotspot known for its upscale shops and lively bars, and cafes. Its streets are modern and trendy, and there is almost always something fun happening nearby. This area is particularly highly rated for young professionals, foodies, and those looking for a luxurious place to stay.
Finally, if you’re interested in the Highlife music culture and heart-pounding nightlife of Accra, Osu is the place to be. Known as Accra’s entertainment hub, this neighbourhood is brimming with bars, restaurants, clubs, and street food vendors. And at the very heart of it all is Oxford Street – a dream come true for party-seekers.

Alright, let’s take a closer look at each area, break down what the best places to stay are, and what the coolest things to do in each area are.
1. Airport Residential Area / Roman Ridge – Where to Stay in Accra for Your First Time
The Airport Residential Area is less industrial than it sounds. Sure, the area around an airport is usually not the ideal place to find accommodation, but in this city, it kind of is. If it’s your first time visiting the city, or if you’re passing through with an early flight, this isn’t just a convenient place to stay, but a safe and central one.
It’s surprisingly serene, considering it is so close to the airport. I’d definitely consider it an upscale neighbourhood, almost like a leafy enclave. And the accommodation is not half bad either; with a blend of hotels, serviced apartments, and quiet streets, it’s a great neighbourhood to return to after a busy day.
The Lennox | Best Luxury Apartments in Airport Residential Area
I’m not sure I’ve seen a better view of the city than the one from this place to stay in Accra. The Lennox is a modern high-rise in the heart of the Airport Residential Area, with high ceilings and stylish interiors.
Sure, the views from the rooftop pool deck are some of the best in the city. But this apartment also stands out for its services, including room service, an onsite restaurant, and a beautiful spa and wellness centre.
Accra Luxury Apartments at Clifton Place | Best Apartments with Gym in Airport Residential Area
Stepping into these modern apartments feels like diving right into the heart of Accra. Clifton Place feels homey and well-equipped, with all the makings of a high-end hotel but none of the pretence.
What do I mean by this? Well, you’ll have access to shared amenities like the pool and gym, as well as your very own private apartment where you can cook and live a normal day-to-day life.
Somewhere Nice | Best Hostel Near Airport Residential Area
Now, this is the only hostel in the city, and while it isn’t right in the centre of the Airport Residential Area, it’s pretty close to this Accra neighbourhood. The place is quintessentially Ghanaian, set in an old home with upcycled wood floors and doors and a well-stocked kitchen.
But where it really stands out is with the bar and pool. All in all, the hostel pushes itself to be as environmentally friendly as possible – and we are here for it.

And with a private workspace in each suite, this is another particularly great option for digital nomads.
La Villa Boutique Hotel | Best Boutique Hotel in Labone
Once you see pictures of the pool at La Villa Boutique Hotel, you won’t blame me for raving so much about this spot. Seriously, I’m this hotel’s biggest fan. The central courtyard and pool, surrounded by lush greenery, is the perfect place to return to after a day in the busy city.
And with rooms this gorgeous, food so yummy, and such helpful staff, I wouldn’t blame you if you ate all your meals right here from the comfort of the property.
Hechtech House | Best Bed and Breakfast in Labone
Hechtech House is technically located between Labone and Osu, making it one of the more centrally located places to stay in Accra. Although it’s a B&B by definition, it really feels more like a private homestay.
It’s like a quiet oasis in the centre of the city. And let’s not forget the breakfast, which is served on an open terrace and includes freshly made bread. What’s not to love?

Set in the heart of Labone, this little townhouse is the ultimate self-catering vacation rental. It’s pretty spacious, considering it’s designed for two guests and has been refurbished with stylish fittings and homey furniture.

And for those looking for nightlife, shopping, and dining, Cantonments is never too far from the city’s beating heart.

This might look like a traditional business hotel, but it has some surprises up its sleeve. Every little detail is taken care of here, and the dedication to service truly shows. Take the rolled towels in the gym, the boutique toiletries, and the airport shuttle service, for example.

East Legon is trendy, dynamic, and quintessentially Ghanaian. It’s known for being the neighbourhood where all the local Ghanaians who have lived abroad return to when they move back to Accra. And bringing with them foreign income, the neighbourhood is packed with extravagant homes and luxury villas.
The only downside is that it’s prone to heavy traffic. Because of the large properties, it’s also a bit spread out, which makes it a bit unwalkable. Oh, and it’s expensive.
You can expect all the top-class amenities that help make this area the playground for global nomads and Ghanaian elites. Gyms, entertainment centres, dining options, and pulsating nightlife—East Legon has it all.
The Signature | Best Hotel in East Legon
If you’re wondering where to stay in Accra for an opulent experience, The Signature is the epitome of luxury living.
They call it an apartment hotel because most suites have their own kitchenettes and living areas, but guests also have access to shared amenities you might expect from a hotel – a gym overlooking the city, parking, a rooftop pool, and even mini golf – yes, random, I know.
KoKo Palm Inn | Best Inn in East Legon
The KoKo Palm Inn is run by a group of friendly, engaging women who are serious about making guests feel right at home. The hotel is comfortable and clean, and the helpful staff will go out of their way to make your stay as seamless as possible.
Now, my favourite part of the property, which kind of looks like a grand villa, is the pool and garden. Ask any local; there is no better way to end a hot day in Accra than with a dip in the pool.

Serviced apartments are all the rage in Accra. Why stay in a small, stuffy hotel room when you can have a full apartment with a kitchen and living space, all with the same services as a hotel? Osu is home to the iconic Oxford Street. Nope – not the one from central London, but Accra’s very own high street equivalent (take that with a pinch of salt—it is very, very different). This is where you will find all the nightlife, shops, and restaurants. It’s undoubtedly the most ‘happening’ part of town, with something on the agenda 24 hours a day.
My favourite part of this neighbourhood is that you can walk just about everywhere. Just make sure to stay aware of your surroundings. The streets are busy, and petty crime isn’t unheard of.
Central Hotel Ridge | Another Great Hotel in Osu
If you’re here to embrace the energetic spirit of Accra, why not stay right in the heart of the city at the Central Hotel Ridge? This hotel is locally run at a super high standard. Everything is beautifully kept and maintained, and the rooms are much bigger than most traditional hotels.
Half of the hotel seems to have been renovated, while the other half is older yet still clean and comfortable. Ask about the new rooms when booking!
Modern 1-Bed Shipping Container Apartment | Best Affordable Apartment in Osu
It might be small, but where it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in charm, comfort, and convenience. This modern one-bedroom apartment is set in a revamped shipping container and is one of the best-priced places to stay in Accra’s Labone.
It’s within walking distance of most shops and restaurants in Labone and Osu, and most importantly, it is well-air-conditioned – and let me tell you, this is absolutely necessary in the warmer months.

I would consider this one of Osu’s best-kept secrets. Who would have thought you could find such a quiet and peaceful place to stay in Accra’s busiest neighbourhood?
