It’s not one of Albania’s most popular tourist towns, and that is precisely what makes it so special.
Arriving with relatively low expectations, my mind was blown by the old-world magic and stunning stone architecture. Combine that with mountain air so fresh I wished I could bottle it, massive fortresses overlooking the Drina River Valley, and an unsung energy that feels both relaxed and energetic at the same time, and it really is a dream come true.

The Old City Bazaar is the heart and soul of the city. It’s the one neighbourhood I would recommend anyone stay in, whether you’re on a history mission, looking for vibrant culture, or good food.
Cfaka (Lower City Centre)
Cfaka is technically the lower part of the city centre, located south of the Old Bazaar, to have cheaper prices, but close enough to access all the major sites on foot.
Rruga Palorto
From Ottoman-era ruins to Cold War relics, Rruga Palorto is home to some of Gjirokaster’s most interesting historical attractions.
Rruga Studenti
Rruga Studenti is a small Gjirokaster neighbourhood north of the Old Bazaar and central Gjirokaster. Since it’s home to the local university campus, the atmosphere here is much younger and more lively.
Gjirokaster is a fascinating little city tucked into the mountains in inland southern Albania. It’s one of those places where ancient history and modern life flow together perfectly. Gjirokaster is one of my favourite places to stay in Albania. The region’s rich past, which includes a period of Ottoman influence and Balkan culture, ensures the town and each of its neighbourhoods has its own unique vibe and character.
If it’s your first time visiting, the Old City Bazaar is hands down the place to stay in Gjirokaster. It’s the cultural and historic centre of the town, and it feels a bit like you’re living in the walls of a living museum. It’s got markets, artisanal shops, local cafes, and a general scent of strong Albanian coffee wafting through the streets.
For history fans, Rruga Palorto, west of the Old Bazaar, is the spot to stay. It’s technically a street lined with incredibly well-preserved Ottoman-era homes, many of which you can stay in. Morning walks past these stone walls and old fountains will be just the start of your historic adventure.

If you’re on a tight budget, Cfaka, which is considered the lower city centre, is a more residential and relaxed neighbourhood with affordable guesthouses and eateries. To be fair, this entire city is relatively easy on the wallet, but this neighbourhood in particular is a good bet if you want to find a cheap place to stay while being close to the main sights, without breaking the bank.
Finally, Rruga Studenti is unsurprisingly the town’s student centre. It’s where the university is located, which means the neighbourhood attracts a younger crowd. It’s also got its fair share of affordable cafes and coworking spaces for digital nomads and freelancers, something we love to see in a historic European city.
Gjirokaster might not be a beach resort or a ski town, but it’s one of the most historically interesting Ottoman-era cities in the Balkans and should be firmly included in your Albania travel itinerary. Picking where to stay depends on the type of experience you want.

Deciphering neighbourhoods wasn’t so simple here, since the entire town is so small and essentially has one large central area. But I’ve separated things into different areas and streets based on each neighbourhood’s main offerings and tourist attractions:
1. Old City Bazaar – Where to Stay in Gjirokaster for Your First Time

The Old City Bazaar is the heart and soul of the city. It’s the one neighbourhood I would recommend anyone stay in, whether you’re on a history mission, looking for vibrant culture, or good food. There are traditional markets, craft shops, and local eateries dotted amongst the old stone buildings.
It’s slightly touristy, as it’s one of the best places to visit in Albania, but it feels like a relatively authentic hub with lots of locals enjoying the buzzing atmosphere.
It’s also where you will find the Ethnographic Museum, Qafa e Pazarit or central plaza, the Clock Tower, and entrances to the historic underground tunnels that date back to the Cold War and Albania’s communist period.
Accommodations range from hotels to apartment rentals and even a hostel option for the budget traveller.
Hotel Gjirokastra | Best Hotel in Old City Bazaar
Hotel Gjirokaster is one of those places that feels warm and homey, but with a touch of modern comfort. It’s located right in the heart of the Old Bazaar, walking distance from all the restaurants and old Ottoman stone buildings the city is so famous for. The building itself is historic, with comfortable rooms that have been refurbished with a combination of antique and modern touches. It’s one of the best hotels in Albania.
Friends Hostel | Best Hostel in Old City Bazaar
There aren’t too many hostels in Gjirokaster, but Friends Hostel makes sure budget travellers are sorted with an affordable accommodation option right in the city centre. It’s vibrant and welcoming, with a communal atmosphere, bright common areas including a rooftop deck with a castle view, and plenty of dormitory options. The hostel also has private rooms with shared bathrooms, for those with a craving a little bit more privacy.
City Grove: Blooms and Beds | Best Apartment in Old City Bazaar
Pet-friendly, affordable, and centrally located – these are some key factors that make City Grove’s two-bedroom apartment feel like one of the best places to stay in Gjirokaster. On the note of location, it feels a bit like a secret hideout in the middle of the busiest part of Gjirokaster. The airy, light-filled apartment is filled with wooden touches, cool tiles, and modern amenities. It’s the perfect mix of nature-inspired and modern.

Cfaka is technically the lower part of the city centre, located south of the Old Bazaar, to have cheaper prices, but close enough to access all the major sites on foot. On top of this, it has an irresistible residential charm where locals go about their daily lives. This is what makes it perfect for budget travellers.
The only downside is, ironically, the uphill walk to get into the centre – but as long as you are relatively fit, it shouldn’t be an issue! Staying here gives you the opportunity to explore Gjirokaster more like a local, with easy access to bus routes and local shops (and we all love a local grocery store in a foreign city).
DAM Stone Boutique Hotel | Best Boutique Hotel in Cfaka
Spending a night at DAM Stone Boutique Hotel feels like sliding into a beautifully preserved time capsule of Albanian elegance. Set in the Gjirokaster neighbourhood of Cfaka, the cool stone walls and warm wooden accents create the perfect mix of homeyness and stylishness. It’s elegant and historic at the same time, with an intimate atmosphere and personalised touches common to boutique properties.
Guri Guesthouse | Best Guesthouse in Cfaka
Guri Guesthouse is one of those properties so comfortable, you might struggle to leave your room. I’d put that up to the fact that it has one of the most spectacular terraces in the city, overlooking the mountains and the city from a high point of view. The hospitality here feels genuine and relaxed, perfect for travellers who want to experience a touch of local life while still being taken care of.

Views, views, and more beautiful views. If I were to describe this property to a friend, this would be the gist of it. The Guva Guesthouse is set right in the heart of Cfaka, close to the castle and the Old Bazaar. Its crowning glory is the terrace, which is perfect for enjoying your morning coffee overlooking the Fortress and the surrounding mountains.

From Ottoman-era ruins to Cold War relics, Rruga Palorto is home to some of Gjirokaster’s most interesting historical attractions. It’s the closest place to stay in Gjirokaster to the iconic Gjirokaster Fortress, making it the perfect place for those who put history above everything else.
It’s technically one street, but when we speak about Rruga Palorto, we’re usually including the entire area lined with well-preserved Ottoman-era houses and cobblestone pathways that require keeping your eyes peeled for slippery rocks at all times.
There are plenty of accommodations set right in these historic homes, from hotels to guest houses and even some homes on the rental market for those who prefer the self-catering appeal. Locals here tend to be traditional and respectful, with a few expats in the mix.

I’m a big fan of this guest house, mostly because it feels as if you’re staying inside a significant piece of history. Rruga Studenti is a small Gjirokaster neighbourhood north of the Old Bazaar and central Gjirokaster. It’s even more local than Cfaka, but with one small difference: Since it’s home to the local university campus, the atmosphere here is much younger and more lively. The neighbourhood is relatively hilly. It surrounds the Stadiumi Luftëtari, used for plenty of sports matches hosted by the various educational institutions.
With a casual social vibe pulsating through the streets, it’s a great neighbourhood to connect with young travellers and full-time residents. Though a bit more contemporary in population (and architecture), it’s still close enough to the Old Town and Fortress to explore the main attractions of Gjirokaster. In fact, it’s less than 15 minutes walking distance from the Old Bazaar.
Sharm Hotel Luxury | Best Hotel in Rruga Studenti
This place to stay in Gjirokaster feels unique compared with many of the city’s hotels, mainly because it’s more modern and luxurious. It’s almost as if the hotel were taken out of a major European city and placed right in the heart of one of Albania’s most historic towns. High ceilings, bespoke lighting, and wooden touches set the tone. But it’s the spa and health centre that really set this place apart.
House Aria VILLA | Best Villa Rental in Rruga Studenti
Spending a night at the House Aria Villa feels a lot more like staying in a local Albanian family home than an apartment rental. It’s filled with personal objects and decorative details, from religious art to well-read books and handmade pottery. Gjirokaster is one of Albania’s lesser-known towns, which is precisely what makes it such a gem. It’s compact and easy to navigate on foot, and is packed with historic homes, museums, and ruins. There are even tunnels burrowed deep beneath the town from the Cold War.
When deciding where to stay in Gjirokaster, it’s important to know that most neighbourhoods are adjacent to one another and easy to get to, no matter where you stay.
