North of Nevsky is a neighborhood located in the city centre. It is situated within the Tsentralny District and lies north of the Nevsky Prospekt thoroughfare.

This often-overlooked area of the city is home to some of the best palaces, art galleries, and museums that Saint Petersburg has to offer. It also has a great selection of bars, cafes, restaurants, and clubs that offers a traditional and authentic Russian night out.

North of Nevsky is also my best recommendation for where to stay in Saint Petersburg for one night because it has such a great selection of hostels and budget hotels. Here you can find excellent accommodations that will help you stretch your dollars (or rubles) just a little bit further.

For decades, New Holland Island was one of the most mysterious areas of the city because it was owned by the army and was closed off to visitors and locals. In the early-2010s, the island opened to the public and has quickly risen the ranks as one of the hippest ‘hoods in Saint Petersburg thanks to its trendy shops, lively bars, and innovative restaurants.

The area is also popular in the summertime because it has a large green space and hosts regular events.
