Becoming obsessed with Tirana was not on my bingo card this year but alas – here we are! The Eastern European city has an energy that is so lacking in other places and I just can’t get enough of it. It still holds all the traditions and history of the past yet has become one of the most trendy cities in the Balkans.
While the country may be small, the capital city has so many little neighbourhoods that deciding where to stay in Tirana isn’t as straightforward as it may seem.
My first time visiting I was on the tiniest budget and ended up staying in the university area and didn’t realise it was a 25-minute walk to the city centre. So I’m here to teach you from my mistakes!
Whether you want a cool ass hostel in the centre to vibe with other travellers, or a trendy flat in the fast-paced Blloku neighbourhood, this guide will help you figure out the best place to stay in Tirana for you!

Usually, the budget area of a city is a bit dodgy and way out on the outskirts of town, but not 21 Djetori. This area is a backpacker and budget traveler paradise with loads of hostels and affordable Airbnbs in an excellent location.
Blloku
The Blloku neighbourhood is one of the most epic places to stay in Tirana! It used to be where the communist elite lived and has now been reinvented into the most lively part of town.
Komuna e Parisit
Komuna e Parisit is located just a little outside of town near the Grand Park, this neighbourhood is perfect for families looking for a quieter stay with easy access to the city.
The Best Areas to Stay in Tirana
My expectations for Tirana were literally on the floor when I arrived as a pit stop on my whirlwind Balkan backpacking trip. I knew very little about the capital of Albania except that it was under a dictatorship until around the 90’s. I had planned to get in and immediately head on a road trip to the Alps or the incredible beaches of Albania.
Uff, I was SO WRONG, and thank god for that!
Tirana totally took me by surprise! With drastic changes from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, Tirana is a mix of old Balkan city meets modern metropolis. I wasn’t expecting to see the colourful buildings, or greenery and outdoor cafes everywhere.
This full breakdown will give you a little more insight into the different areas as well as the best hotels, hostels, unique accommodations, and activities in each spot.
1. Tregu Cam – Where to Stay in Tirana for Your First Time
If you like to be in the thick of all the action then Tregu Cam is the best place to stay! First-timers in Tirana will love how close it is to everything. Whether you turn left or right out of your hotel, you’ll be met with beautiful streets full of colourful buildings and local markets!
Right in the centre of the city, Tregu Cam is where you’ll spend most of your time exploring the main landmarks, museums, and historical sites so it just makes sense to make it your home base! And because of the convenient location, everywhere is walkable so you won’t have to worry about navigating public transportation or hitting up some of the best places to see in Albania.

- The Vibe: Lively, bustling, less touristy than coastal towns

If someone has backpacked Albania there is a 99% chance they stayed at Trip N Hostel – me included! This popular hostel is a must-stay for solo travellers, with an open-air garden, a bar, and loads of games and books it’s an absolute vibe in the common areas. The dorms are clean with privacy curtains and they also have a few double rooms for a bit more comfort. Basically, if you’re backpacking in Albania, then you’ll no doubt stay here at some point!
2. 21 Djetori – Best Place to Stay in Tirana on a Budget

Located close to Skanderbeg Square and Blloku, it’s just a short walk to all the popular spots in Tirana—without breaking the bank! You can really feel the city’s authenticity here, imagine old men sipping their espressos in the morning sun while kids zip by on their bikes. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, soak in the atmosphere, and connect with the community.
Make sure you have your eSim for Albania set up though for maps, because I got lost exploring this area and all it’s little streets!

- The Vibe: Busy and urban, strong local vibe compared to central squares

Tirana Cozy Apartment | Best Apartment
This Albanian apartment is the perfect stay for a solo traveller or a couple. The property is only a 20-minute walk from the centre and is unbelievably cheap for a full flat all to yourself.
With a fully equipped kitchen and cute living space, this is the perfect place to relax for a few nights in the city.
Mosaic Home | Best Hostel
The vibes are off the chart at Mosaic Home. With gorgeous natural lighting and vibrant interior décor, this hostel is a must-stay. With modern dorms or private rooms available, Mosaic Home is a great option for budget travellers looking for a comfortable and stylish stay. Plus the breakfast is cheap and yummy! It’s one of the best Albanian hostels on the market.
3. Blloku – Best Area to Stay in Tirana For Nightlife
The Blloku neighbourhood is one of the most epic places to stay in Tirana! It used to be where the communist elite lived and has now been reinvented into the most lively part of town. Overflowing with trendy cafes, and lines of bars and clubs, this is the perfect spot for night owls. It’s a little more expensive than some of the other neighbourhoods but I think it’s worth it! It’s where I usually perch up when visiting the city.
It’s also super close to the centre of Tirana, and during the day, Blloku has a cool hipster vibe with street art, boutique shops, and delicious restaurants to explore. The famous Tirana Pyramid, a former communist monument, is also located in this neighbourhood. I recommend climbing it at sunset for an epic view.

- The Vibe: Upscale, social, more tourist-friendly than some other neighbourhoods

Something about the rooms in this hotel reminds me of a bachelor’s pad, perhaps it’s the sleek and modern interior design or the prime location in Blloku. Either way, Tirana Central Rooms is one of the best hotels in Blloku for its convenient location, chic decor, and helpful owner (even if you aren’t a bachelor!)

The area is full of green spaces, trendy cafes, and playgrounds for the little ones. Plus, it’s right next to the artificial lake where you can go for a nice walk or rent a paddleboat for some fun on the water. The neighbourhood is uber welcoming with locals getting fresh air and exercise at the park and relaxing at the cafes.
- Best For: Families, long-term visitors, cafe culture, shopping
- The Vibe: Quieter, residential, relaxed, modern, social but less busy, more expats around
- Proximity to Airport: ~25-30 mins drive from Tirana International Airport (TIA)
- Transport Level: Easy. Taxis and buses everywhere. Relatively walkable but traffic can be busy.
- Budget: Mid-range. Generally more affordable than Blloku, but pricier than the likes of Tregu Çam

How do you get Albanian currency? I’m in the UK and the local banks sent to a currency exchange office who told me I’d have to take euros and exchange those in Tirana. Is that true?

Albanian Lek isn’t particularly sort after outside of the country so its unlikely many exchange offices would stock much of it. I would say what you have been told is indeed the case, you need to take hard currency GPB, Euro, USD etc and exchange in country. You should also have an ATM card as a back up.
