Quick answer: The best hostels in Kathmandu

What to look for to find the best hostels in Kathmandu

Obviously the ‘best’ anything is completely subjective, but when it comes to hostels there’s a few important things to take into consideration.

  1. Location – Kathmandu is an enormous city with poor public transit. If you are looking for a specific thing to do in Kathmandu (ie, trekking, or visiting temples) consider something close to your desired activity. I’d recommend finding a hostel near Thamel. Yes, it’s super touristy, loud and crazy, but you’ll be centrally located and able to get around easier.
  2. Price – By backpacking standards, Kathmandu is super cheap, which is why Nepal is one of the best bang-for-your-buck-countries. While there are a few expensive options, you won’t have to worry too much about spending a ton of money on accommodation anywhere in Nepal (which is why it’s not always a terrible idea to splurge here a bit).
  3. Amenities – With such cheap prices in Nepal as a whole, pinching a penny isn’t always as necessary as say Japan. The good news though it that a large majority of hostels in Kathmandu offer some sort of free Nepalese breakfast. Unfortunately, Wifi connections tend to be poor.
