Hilton Head Island’s Four Best Neighborhoods to Stay in

With miles of golden sandy beaches and water sports in almost every town, you’re truly spoiled for choice on Hilton Head Island! There are a few key differences between each area though, so you need to pick the best neighborhood for you depending on what you want out of your trip.

Whether you want to embrace your inner beach bum, dive into some hardcore water sports, or just soak up the local vibes, Hilton Head’s got a neighborhood for you. Stick around for the full scoop on each area, complete with my top accommodation picks and must-do activities.

Coligny is where the action is, and the best place to stay on the island if it’s your first time. It’s got the island’s most popular beach, a plethora of bar and restaurant options, and small boutique shops. You’ll really be spoilt for choice here.

If Coligny is the wild child of the island then Shelter Cove is the cooler, older sibling – polished, a lil bit fancy but with a whole loada soul. If you want to escape the chaos that often comes with Coligny then this is the place for you. It’s got tons of fine dining spots, posh boutiques, and the best sunsets on the island. My favorite thing to do here is go yacht-watching and daydreaming about which one I’d buy if I ever win the lottery (a traveler can dream, right?).

Folly Field Beach is where you go when you want to escape the hustle and bustle but still enjoy the perks of island life. This place is all about the simple pleasures: sun, sand, and surf. The crowd here is more laid-back, and you might even find a bit more space to stretch out. Plus, it’s got that old-school beach town vibe that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret spot.

Finally, we’ve got Harbour Town. This is the postcard version of Hilton Head, complete with a lighthouse that is your typical tourist photo op. It’s charming, it’s picturesque, and it’s got just enough to keep you entertained without overwhelming you. Harbour Town is where you go to stroll, sip on something fancy, and soak up the scenery. It’s not the cheapest place on the island, but boy oh boy is it worth the splurge.
