The 7 Best Hostels in Berlin: 2026 Edition

Choosing just 7 Berlin hostels was tough.

After plenty of research, recommendations and a few stays of my own, these are the hostels I’d recommend for different types of travellers.

Grand Hostel Berlin was one of those hostels that seemed to have a bit of a reputation while I was in the city. Whenever travellers started swapping recommendations, this place often got a mention. And it’s easy to see why. Housed in a beautiful old building on the edge of Kreuzberg, it feels a little more polished than your average backpacker hostel.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Beautiful Building: Set inside a grand historic building with loads of character.
• The Library Bar: A cosy spot to grab a drink, meet fellow travellers or hide away with a book.
• Great Base for Exploring: Close to Checkpoint Charlie, the Jewish Museum and excellent public transport links.

Berlin has no shortage of hostels, but Grand Hostel manages to hit that sweet spot between social and relaxed. It’s the kind of place where you’re just as likely to spend the evening chatting over a beer in the library bar as you are heading out to explore the city. If you’re after a hostel that gets a lot of things right without forcing a party atmosphere, Grand Hostel Berlin is hard to beat.

2. EastSeven Berlin – Best Hostel for Solo Travellers

• Best for: Solo travellers looking to meet people in a relaxed, non-party atmosphere.
• Highlights: Hammocks, BBQ nights, communal dinners and a social atmosphere that doesn’t revolve around drinking.
• Dorms from: $20

• Location: Prenzlauer Berg.

If you’re travelling to Berlin on your own, EastSeven is the hostel I’d be looking at first. It’s got a completely different vibe from a lot of the city’s party hostels. Instead of bar crawls and drinking games, you’ll find communal dinners, a big garden, BBQs and a handful of hammocks that seem to attract backpackers like magnets. It’s the kind of place where people actually talk to each other, making it ridiculously easy to meet new friends and find a crew to explore Berlin with.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Made for Solo Travellers: A friendly, social atmosphere where meeting people feels natural rather than forced.
• The Garden & Hammocks: A proper outdoor hangout space complete with BBQs, hammocks and plenty of room to relax after a day in the city.
• Great Location: Tucked away in Prenzlauer Berg, you’re surrounded by cool cafés, bars and parks, while still being just a short journey from Berlin’s biggest attractions.

EastSeven won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re looking for a hostel bar packed until the early hours, you’ll probably find it a bit tame. But if your ideal hostel involves good chats, shared dinners and people swapping travel tips over a beer in the garden, you’ll feel right at home here. Honestly, for solo travellers, this is about as good as it gets.

3. Singer109 Hostel – Best Budget Hostel

• Best for: Backpackers looking to stretch their budget in Berlin.
• Highlights: Cheap dorms, loads of communal space, and a surprisingly central location.
• Dorms from: $23
• Private rooms from: $69
• Location: Mitte/Friedrichshain border.

Let’s be honest, Berlin is a lot more fun when your money is going towards currywurst, beers and questionable decisions at 2 am rather than an overpriced hostel bed. That’s where Singer109 comes in. It won’t win any awards for being fancy, but if you’re after a cheap place to sleep in a decent location, it’ll do the job nicely.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Budget-Friendly: One of the cheaper hostels you’ll find this close to the centre.
• Plenty of Space: The common areas are huge, so there’s always somewhere to hang out after a day exploring the city.
• Handy Location: Close enough to Alexanderplatz and well-connected if you’re planning to spend your days bouncing around Berlin.

Singer109 isn’t trying to be the coolest hostel in Berlin, and I quite like that about it. It knows exactly what it is. A solid budget hostel, a good location and a place to crash after a long day seeing the city. Tucked between Mitte and Friedrichshain, you’re within walking distance of Alexanderplatz and well connected to the rest of Berlin. The huge common room is a nice bonus too, giving backpackers somewhere to hang out, plan the next day’s adventures or swap stories over a cheap supermarket beer. If you’d rather spend your money on experiences than your bed for the night, this one makes a lot of sense.

4. St. Christopher’s Berlin – Best Party Hostel in Berlin

• Price: $
• Best for: Social backpackers who didn’t come to Berlin for an early night.
• Highlights: Belushi’s Bar, cheap drink deals, nightly events and an unbeatable social scene.
• Dorms from: $22
• Private rooms from: $85
• Location: Mitte.

If you’re heading to Berlin for the nightlife, I’d be amazed if St. Christopher’s doesn’t end up on your radar at some point. This place has been a backpacker favourite for years, and a lot of that comes down to Belushi’s Bar downstairs. Cheap drinks, burgers, live music and a steady stream of travellers looking for a good night out… It’s not exactly difficult to see the appeal.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Belushi’s Bar: The party starts downstairs and quite often ends there too.
• Easy to Meet People: Turn up solo, and there’s a good chance you’ll have plans for the evening before you’ve even unpacked.
• Location, Location, Location: Alexanderplatz, Museum Island, the TV Tower and loads of bars are all within easy reach.

Now let’s be honest, nobody books a party hostel because they’re hoping for the best night’s sleep of their life. If you’re a light sleeper, pack some earplugs and thank me later. But if you’re looking for a hostel where the atmosphere is half the experience, St. Christopher’s absolutely delivers. Berlin is one of the best party cities in the world, and this place throws you right into the thick of it. Just don’t be surprised if breakfast the next morning turns into a group discussion about what actually happened the night before.

5. Circus Hostel – Best Hostel for Location

• Price: $
• Best for: Travellers who want to make the most of their time in Berlin.
• Highlights: An on-site microbrewery, brilliant transport links, and plenty of tours and events.
• Dorms from: $19
• Private rooms from: $81
• Location: Mitte.

Finishing a day of exploring Berlin with a home-brewed beer? Sounds good right? The Circus has its very own microbrewery, which immediately earned a few points in my book. But the wins don’t stop there. What you’ll probably end up appreciating most is the location. With the U-Bahn and tram stopping right outside, getting around Berlin couldn’t be easier. Whether you’re heading to Alexanderplatz, Museum Island, or just chasing down your next currywurst, everything is within easy reach.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Everything You Need: An on-site café, bike hire, walking tours and even a microbrewery all under one roof.
• Brilliant Location: The U-Bahn and tram stop right outside, making it incredibly easy to explore every corner of Berlin.
• Always Something Going On: Quiz nights, karaoke, walking tours and plenty of opportunities to meet fellow travellers.

One thing I noticed with The Circus is how much choice you get. There are dorms, private rooms and pretty much everything in between, so it works whether you’re travelling on a shoestring or treating yourself a bit. Add in the organised activities and walking tours, and you’ve got a hostel where there’s always something to do if you fancy it. Nice when you’re travelling solo or just can’t be bothered planning every minute of your day.

5. Pfefferbett Hostel – Coolest Place to Stay

• Best for: Travellers looking for the coolest place to stay in Berlin.
• Highlights: A former brewery, an awesome neighbourhood, and loads of character.
• Dorms from: $24
• Private rooms from: $108
• Location: Prenzlauer Berg.

One of the things I like about Pfefferbett is that it feels a little different from the moment you arrive. It’s built on the site of a former brewery in Prenzlauer Berg, one of Berlin’s coolest neighbourhoods, and you’re surrounded by cafés, bars, galleries and beer gardens pretty much straight away. It’s also surprisingly peaceful considering how much is going on nearby, making it a great place to recharge between days exploring the city.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• The Brewery Setting: Staying in a former brewery is a lot more interesting than another standard hostel building.
• Cool Neighbourhood: You’re right in the middle of Prenzlauer Berg, one of the best areas in Berlin for food, coffee and people-watching.
• Plenty of Space to Chill: Outdoor terraces, common areas and quiet corners make it easy to slow down between adventures.

If Pfefferbett were a person, it’d be that traveller who turns up looking effortlessly cool, spends the afternoon in a beer garden, knows a great little café around the corner, and somehow always ends up finding the best spot in town. Meanwhile, the rest of us are still trying to work out the U-Bahn map.

6. Kiez Hostel Berlin – Best Hidden Gem

• Price: $
• Best for: Travellers looking for a smaller, friendlier hostel away from the crowds.
• Highlights: A cosy atmosphere, great common areas, and a fantastic Friedrichshain location.
• Dorms from: $20
• Private rooms from: $54
• Location: Friedrichshain.

Kiez isn’t the sort of hostel that grabs your attention with rooftop bars or fancy gimmicks. Instead, it focuses on getting the important stuff right. Clean rooms, modern bathrooms, comfy communal spaces and a location that’s within stumbling distance of some of Berlin’s most famous nightlife.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Hidden Gem Vibes: Smaller and more personal than many of Berlin’s bigger hostels.
• Great Common Areas: Perfect for meeting other travellers, swapping recommendations or planning your next adventure.
• Brilliant Location: East Side Gallery, Friedrichshain nightlife, and excellent transport links are all nearby.

The best way I can describe Kiez is that it feels like the hostel equivalent of that little independent café you find on the second day of a trip and then keep going back to. Nothing flashy. Nothing over the top. Just a really good spot with a friendly atmosphere. And honestly, those are often the places you end up remembering most.

Berlin is one of those cities where every traveller seems to have a different experience. Some come for the history, some come for the nightlife, and some accidentally stay out until 8 am and end up doing both.

With so many hostels to choose from, hopefully this guide has made narrowing it down a little easier. If you’re still on the fence, Grand Hostel Berlin is a fantastic all-rounder, EastSeven is hard to beat for solo travellers, and St. Christopher’s is where I’d be heading if a big night out was high on the agenda.
