Trang An
Trang An is all about jaw-dropping scenery. The Trang An Grottoes are the main draw, with boat routes winding through caves, rivers, and limestone peaks. The area is also great for hiking, with mountain trails offering big views over the surrounding landscape. If it’s your first time in Ninh Binh and you want to be close to the region’s most famous sights, this is a solid base.
Tam Coc – Bich Dong
Tam Coc–Bich Dong is the most popular place to stay in Ninh Binh and for good reason. It’s surrounded by rice paddies and limestone cliffs, with boat rides along the Ngo Dong River putting you right in the middle of it all. Often dubbed the “inland Ha Long Bay,” this area has the widest range of hostels, guesthouses, and affordable hotels, plus plenty of places to eat and drink. It’s ideal if you want value, atmosphere, and easy access to everything.
Khe Ha
Khe Ha is quieter and more relaxed, making it a good fit for families or anyone wanting a slower pace. There’s far less hustle than in Tam Coc, fewer hostels, and more space to unwind. Accommodation here tends to be calmer and better suited to longer stays, with restaurants and shops nearby without the constant tourist buzz.
Ninh Binh sits in northern Vietnam’s Red River Delta and is best known for its dramatic limestone landscapes, rice paddies, and river grottoes. For those looking to stay in Vietnam for crazy green topography whilst having a small slice of peace wedged between crazy Vietnamese cities, Ninh Binh is the perfect escape.
When it comes to choosing where to stay, most travellers base themselves in one of three areas: Trang An, Tam Coc–Bich Dong, or Khe Ha. Each suits a different travel style, but all give easy access to the region’s headline scenery.
Ideally, you’re going to want to be close to the main attractions that are within a short taxi, motorbike, or bicycle commute. The latter two are my most favourable way of exploring Southeast Asia.
Ninh Binh’s Three Best Neighborhoods to Stay in
Deciding on where to stay in Ninh Binh can be a tall order – been there, done that. Here are the top neighbourhoods in Ninh Binh to consider staying in during your visit.
1. Trang An – Where to Stay in Ninh Binh for Your First Time
Trang An is the easy intro level to Ninh Binh, especially if this is your first rodeo. It’s calmer than Tam Coc, lighter on the touts, and way easier to enjoy without feeling like you’re one amongst a hoard of tourists. You still get the full dramatic limestone treatment, just with a bit more breathing room.
The big draw here is the Trang An Grottoes, where karst cliffs, rivers, and temples sing together in harmony to create a scenic loop. There are lots of ways to enjoy too. You can get your sweat on and rent a bicycle, lace up your favourite hiking boots or zip about on a motorbike if you’re lazier like me. Trang An gives you a good introduction to everything Ninh Binh has to offer without frying your nerves on day one.

- The Vibe: Scenic, calm, postcard-level countryside
- Proximity to Airport: About 2.5 hours from Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport by car or shuttle
- Transport Level: Moderate – easy tours and taxis, limited walkability without a bike or scooter
- Budget: Mid-range, with fewer true budget hostels than Tam Coc
- Crowds: Busy during peak hours at the grottoes, quiet once the tour boats clear out
Things to See and Do in Trang An
- Start off your trip in Trang An with none other than a traditional boat tour of the grottoes, with three different tour options available.
- Instead of a traditional boat tour, go on a kayaking tour through the UNESCO World Heritage Site and paddle your own canoe.
- If you’re in the mood to treat yourself, take a local helicopter tour of the Trang An complex.
- Visit the Buddhist structures at the Bai Dinh pagoda, one of the most significant in the area.
- Visit the local farmers in the Trang An complex and learn about their way of life.
- Take to the mountains for a day of hiking as you tackle one of the many local trails on offer.
THE GOAT BOUTIQUE RESORT | Best Hotel in Trang An
Location, location, location – The Goat Boutique Resort screams convenience and serenity together in one awesome package.
The resort also offers either an Asian breakfast or a buffet which definitely has my ears ringing. The sunset views of the mountain also make this place truly memorable. It’s not the cheapest hotel in Trang An, but for a couple bucks more a night I’d much rather swallow the cost to kick it back to those views by the pool.
Green Mountain Homestay | Best Homestay in Trang An
This highly-rated homestay has some pretty sweet features, but what really makes it stick out is the terrace and pool area overlooking the mountains.
It’s also perfectly located for doing a spot of hiking or grabbing a bike and exploring the local surroundings.
2. Tam Coc-Bich Dong – Best Place to Stay in Ninh Binh on a Budget
Tam Coc–Bich Dong is where most backpackers end up, and honestly, there’s a reason for it. You’ve got rice paddies that seemingly glow in the right season, towering limestone cliffs, and that classic boat ride down the Ngo Dong River, which boasts those classic Ninh Binh views.
It’s packed with cheap stays, easy eats, and enough bars to keep things social after sunset. The trade-off is crowds and a steady hum of tourism, but if you’re travelling on a tighter budget and want everything within stumbling distance, this is the spot that gives you a bit of everything.

- The Vibe: Lively, scenic, social, touristy but fun
- Proximity to Airport: About 2.5–3 hours from Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport

- Crowds: High, especially mornings and late afternoons around the river

- Head out of town and discover the beauty of the Cuc Phuong National Park.
- Rent a bicycle and go explore the town and surrounds.
- Visit Vietnam’s former capital, Hoa Lu, and walk to the top of Ma Yen Hill.
Tam Coc Holiday Hotel & Villa | Best Hotel in Tam Coc-Bich Dong
Location is the operative word here, being a stone’s throw from the centre of the town.
The staff are also super friendly and will go above and beyond to help you organize any rentals, and tours, and even provide recommendations for local cuisine.
Oh, and there’s a pretty sweet pool to cool off in during the summer months – bliss!
The Banana Tree Hostel | Best Hostel in Tam Coc-Bich Dong
Aside from the super friendly vibe that The Banana Tree Hostel puts out, the hostel is really spacious and gives you an incredible sense of freedom.
Not to mention, the super epic pool terrace area that stays open until late at night for a spot of night swimming!

At the Tam Coc White Swan Homestay, the owners really make you feel at home and are the kindest and most genuine people you could ask for.
This really epitomises the vibe of a homestay, along with the convenient location in Tam Coc, it’s easy to see why The White Swan Homestay is so loved!
3. Khe Ha – Best Neighborhood in Ninh Binh for Families to Stay In
Khe Ha, like Trang An, is slightly quieter than Tam Coc-Bich Dong. It’s quieter, greener, and way less shouty, which is exactly why families and slower travellers end up here. If you want to swap some of the bar crawls and scooter horns for space, scenery, and a much calmer pace of life, Khe Ha is your spot.
Khe Ha is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam. You’re still close enough to Trang An and the main sights to get around easily by bike or taxi, but far enough away that your day doesn’t revolve around crowds. If you want Ninh Binh without the noise and nonsense, this is the pocket of town that makes it easy.
- Best For: Families, slower travel, anyone dodging party zones
- The Vibe: Quiet, green, local, unhurried
- Proximity to Airport: Around 2–2.5 hours from Hanoi airports by car
- Transport Level: Low-key; bikes and taxis work fine, no real walkability

- Bring out the inner explorer in you and discover the Hang Mua caves.

You know what they say about travel – the people really make it special. This couldn’t be more true for the Hang Mua Village Homestay.

The magic of Ninh Binh is that you can make your time here slow, social, scenic, or a slightly feral backpacker pitstop, all without moving very far at all.
Where you stay here quietly decides the rhythm of your days. Wake up to roosters and misty paddies in Trang An, roll out of bed straight into banana pancakes and beers in Tam Coc, or tuck yourself away somewhere calmer if you’re done with the noise.
Wherever you choose to stay, make sure you take advantage of the days here by waking up early, renting a bicycle and don’t forget to take a boat ride down Trang An! A little tip for you: don’t attempt the Hang Mua viewpoint for sunset. The crowds are crazy, and you’re much better off going in the early AM to save yourself from the heat.
