Terribly underrated, Miami is one of the coolest and most underrated destinations in the United States.

But with over 14 million tourists a year and thousands of expensive properties, it can be overwhelming to know where to stay.

Which is exactly why I made this list of the best hostels in Miami.

I’ve separated the different hostels into different categories. So you can find whatever is important to you (low price, space to work, a private room, etc) and use it to weed through all of the amazing hostels Miami has to offer.

This will allow you to spend less time searching for a hostel, and more time eating as much Cuban food as you possibly can.

Let’s look over some of the best hostels in Miami!

Quick answer: The Best Hostels in Miami

What to look for in the best hostels in Miami

Miami is great. If you avoid spending too much time on South Beach, you’ll find a fascinating city with an amazing art and music scene. And you’ll also get to try some of the best Latin American food of your life – at a decent price!

Nowhere in the US is cheap. This is a fact. But some of the best hostels in Miami can help you save some money, and point you in the right direction to travel this expensive city on a budget. There are a few things, in particular, that helped me put this list together.

  • Location – Arguably the most important thing on this list. Miami is enormous and has some super, super rough parts. It’s not a city you want to get lost in, especially at night. Having said that, don’t freak out, just make sure to book a hostel in a location you are aware of. If there are things, in particular, you are looking to see, the closer you are the better, as the public transit is OK at best.
  • Price – Miami is mostly going to be expensive, but you’ll be able to find cheap food if you find local Latin American restaurants (and you should). The Price of Travel puts Miami at $71 a day, but If you want to go out drinking at any clubs, say adios to anything that resembles a ‘budget’.
  • Amenities – My favorite hostel hack (and #70 on this epic list) is to find a hostel that provides free breakfast. And surprisingly, most of the hostels not only provide free breakfast but a TON of other stuff! Score! Free drinks, free towels, free lockers, free pools – Miami hostels aren’t cheap, but they certainly are committed to providing value.
Things DO go missing sometimes…

What to Pack for your Miami Hostel

We don’t often travel without these essentials.

best toiletry bag for one bag travel

1. Active Roots Toiletry Bag: Keep your bath-and-beauty items organized and in the right place with this water-resistant bag. With large compartments, mesh and enclosed clear sections, you can fit everything you might need inside. Hang it up or let it stand on its own – this bag is a must-have for dorm-lifers.

Noise Cancelling Earbuds

2. Noise-Cancelling Earbuds: These simple earbuds will help you out. Keeping out most of the surrounding sounds, you can either choose to listen to some relaxing music or no sound at all while falling asleep. This can be a life-saver in some unexpected party hostels. Make sure you’re well-rested for the next adventures!

AR Towel

3. Active Roots Microfiber Towel: Quick-drying, lightweight, super soft and compact – the Active Roots Microfiber Towel is essential for every backpacker. No need to use the scabby towels your hostel may or may not provide! Use it for drying off, as a yoga towel or even as a picnic blanket – the options don’t stop here. Made of antibacterial material, you don’t have to worry about your towel starting to smell unpleasant either after lots of use.

Travel Pillow

4. TRTL Travel Pillow: Get rid of the red eyes and yawning with this TRTL travel pillow. It’s not just a normal neck pillow (I mean, look at it!), the ergonomic design gives your neck and head so much comfortable support that you’ll actually be able to have some decent rest. Super easy to carry and clean, it takes up so little space compared to a traditional travel pillow.

Luggage Travel Lock

5. Padlock: Theft happens in hostels, so keep a padlock to clip on your locker. This padlock can also double to keep your pack shut while in-transit. No need for keys (which can easily be lost or stolen too), you just have to remember a three-digit number to unlock your travel essentials.

Travel Pocket Soaps

6. Sea to Summit Travel Soap: When dirtbagging around the globe, hygiene sometimes comes a bit short. This Sea to Summit Travel Soap can wash your hands, clothes or anything else, wherever you are. The soap strips are dry and super thin but dissolve in contact with water, so you can even take it easily through security in a carry-on.
