Downtown Bridgetown is where you should stay if you’re hoping to immerse yourself in the island’s local culture and get a sense of what day-to-day life is really like in Bridgetown.
Saint Lawrence Gap
If you’re in Barbados to party, then you should stay at Saint Lawrence Gap, known as ‘The Gap’ amongst locals. Nowhere is the nightlife as vibrant as in this beachside neighbourhood packed with nightclubs and live music venues.
Rockley
Rockley is a peaceful neighbourhood that is surrounded by stunning beaches where the kids can splash around and play whilst you get some much-needed downtime!
St. Ann’s Garrison
This quaint neighbourhood is dotted with colonial homes and lots of the most intriguing historical buildings. Visiting the old George Washington House was a real personal highlight, and spending time at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society gave me loads of insight into the city’s complex colonial past and ties with slavery.
After an amazing trip to Bridgetown, I’ve picked out my favourite neighbourhoods to help you get a sense of what there is to do in the city and where you should stay.
The heart of the city is without a doubt the Downtown area. Known for its busy shopping streets and lively markets, it’s always busy with locals chatting with one another. My personal favourite was the Cheapside Market! It’s also where some of Bridgetown’s most famous historical landmarks are. The cathedral and old synagogue, which history enthusiasts have to check out, are in Downtown.
Continue further south and you’ll reach Carlisle Bay. It feels like a completely different world from the Downtown area. I didn’t expect much from the beaches in Barbados’ biggest city – but boy was I wrong!
The stretches of coast along Carlisle Bay looked like they were straight out of a brochure. It’s no wonder it’s the most popular neighbourhood for diving and snorkelling. Going diving in the open waters in Carlisle Bay and seeing the old cannonballs and anchors that were left behind by ships was a highlight of my trip! Another perk of staying here is that it’s just a few minutes walk away from Bridgetown’s next neighbourhood, St. Ann’s Garrison.
Known as the Garrison amongst locals, this neighbourhood is my top pick for history nerds. The area is quiet and tranquil compared to the city centre, a welcome relief from the busy market streets in Downtown. It’s such a charming neighbourhood that even George Washington lived here for a few months in 1751! If you’re interested in the island’s colonial past and you want to visit some plantation homes, this is definitely the place to be.
Continue further south along the coast and you’ll hit Rockley. The neighbourhood feels like a mix of a resort and a small town, which is why it’s my top pick for families. The laid-back atmosphere and unrushed pace of life made me feel like I was on a true island holiday! One of the most unforgettable experiences of my time in Rockley was seeing the turtles just off the shore of Worthing Beach.
Last up, Saint Lawrence Gap. Unlike the tranquil streets of Rockley, this neighbourhood, situated along the island’s Highway 7, packs a punch. Known as ‘The Gap’ amongst locals, it’s famous for its lively nightlife. I spent lots of my evenings hopping between live music venues and checking out the island’s coolest nightclubs. It’s safe to say there’s always a buzz in the air once the sun goes down in The Gap. In the daytime, it’s surprisingly quiet, I guess because everyone is sleeping off their hangovers from the night before!
Bridgetown’s Five Best Neighbourhoods to Stay in
Let’s take a look at each of the city’s coolest neighbourhoods. Each one has something unique to offer, and depending on what sort of trip you’re looking for, you’ll be drawn to some neighbourhoods more than others.
1. Carlisle Bay – Where to Stay in Bridgetown for Your First Time
Carlisle Bay is home to the city’s best beaches. The crystal-clear waters and white sand shores were picture-perfect and even better than what you’d expect from city beaches, even in the Caribbean. There’s pretty much no water sport you can’t do at Carlisle Bay.
I spent my days here paddleboarding, kayaking, and diving! If you’re looking for a dreamy beach holiday destination, this is the place to stay. It’s also my top pick for first-timers as it’s super close to the markets in Downtown and the historical landmarks in St. Ann’s Garrison.
Sakari Ventures Apartment | Cosy Two-bedroom Apartment Close To The Beach
The simple but well-equipped apartments at Sakari Ventures are run by a friendly local family who are always happy to help. It was super handy having a kitchen for nights when I didn’t want to go out, and having a balcony made the flat feel bigger. Brownes Beach is less than a 10-minute walk away from the apartment!
8 Banyan Court | Luxurious Modern Flat Perfect For A Family Getaway
If you’re looking for something modern in the neighbourhood, then this is my top pick apartments. Unlike some of the older colonial homes in town, it’s got modern amenities and up-to-date decor. There are two bedrooms, so it’s a great choice for families or groups of friends. The location is hard to beat as it’s a short walk away from Brownes Beach.
Sunset Glow Guesthouse | Colourful Top-Floor Apartment A Short Walk Away From The Beach
This top-floor apartment is so spacious it feels more like a house. It’s just a 10-minute walk away from the beach, but it’s also really close to all the historical landmarks like the Historic Garrison Savannah in the next neighbourhood over. The owners were really helpful and gave me loads of tips about what to see and do, and knew about loads of local attractions I wouldn’t have found online, like the Friday night fish fry at Oistins!
Things to See and Do in Carlisle Bay
- Go paddle boarding at Pebbles Beach, which is blessed with calm waters so you won’t get tipped off your paddleboard!
- Chill on Brownes Beach and sample local snacks made by the vendors who walk up and down the beach throughout the day.
- Book yourself onto a snorkelling tour in Carlisle Bay where you’ll see underwater relics like rusty anchors and historical cannonballs. There are six dive-worthy wrecks to choose from!
- Spend a day lazing on Bayshore Beach. Catch a tan and read your book in between taking dips in the ocean to cool off!
- Visit the old 1885 Needham’s Point Lighthouse at the far end of the bay. It’s a great spot to get pictures of the bay from, too.
- Go kayaking along the azure blue ocean surrounding Pebbles Beach. The water is so clear that you can see the fish swimming past the side of your boat.
- Join a snorkelling tour and swim with turtles, an experience you won’t forget anytime soon!
2. Downtown – Best Place to Stay in Bridgetown on a Budget
Downtown Bridgetown is where you should stay if you’re hoping to immerse yourself in the island’s local culture and get a sense of what day-to-day life is really like in Bridgetown. I spent my time wandering around Cheapside Market, where the smells of grilled seafood and cooking plantain always got my belly rumbling.
There are loads of duty-free shopping streets too, so it’s the best neighbourhood for souvenir shopping! Because the area is more local, the hotels and guesthouses are on the cheaper side, making it my top pick for anyone travelling on a tight budget.
Harvey’s Mizpahcot Oasis | Stay A Short Walk Away From the City Centre
There aren’t many apartments in the Downtown neighbourhood, so this 2-bedroom flat is a steal! There was even a little work desk area, which is great for anyone who needs to work remotely while they’re away. All the best shopping streets and Cheapside Market are super nearby, and even if you decide to walk to Brownes Beach in the next neighbourhood, you’d be there in less than 20 minutes!
Kensington Oval | A Cool Traditional Barbados House in Downtown
Ever wondered what the colourful colonial homes dotted around Barbados are like on the inside? Well, now you can stay at one! I found it a super interesting experience staying in a traditional family home on the outskirts of Downtown, which is why this home away from home was one of my favourite places to stay. The kitchen had everything I needed for a short stay, and the bedrooms were super cosy. I could reach all the busiest streets in Downtown and the old baobab tree in Queen’s Park in no time.
Spacious Colonial | A Budget-Friendly Colonial Apartment Packed With Character
This little studio apartment in an old colonial property is a great option for anyone travelling on a tight budget! The owner was incredibly helpful and always went out of his way to make sure I was having a nice stay. Although it doesn’t take long to walk to town from the property, the bus stop right by the flat was great for getting to other neighbourhoods in Bridgetown. It’s my top-pick budget option for a couple.
Things to See and Do in Downtown
- Check out the monuments at National Heroes Square, which pay tribute to the country’s national heroes. The Lord Horatio Nelson Statue and Cenotaph are the most famous.
- Go shopping on Broad Street! Browse the many duty-free shops and dip in and out of local shopping malls along this narrow street.
- Immerse yourself in local culture at Cheapside Market. While you’re there, get your hands on some local leatherwork and handcrafted pieces of jewellery to take home. The market is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
- Enjoy the lively atmosphere along Swan Street. Another shopping area with great duty-free deals!
- Stroll through Queen’s Park and check out the island’s oldest tree. The 90-foot-tall baobab tree is thought to be around 1,000 years old!
- Wander past St. Michael’s Cathedral, whose history dates as far back as the 17th century.
- Visit the old Nidhe Israel Synagogue & Museum on a walking tour. It’s one of the oldest in the Americas, which is why it’s a UNESCO-protected site.
- Check out the Parliament Buildings. Built back in the mid-1800s, it’s a great example of neo-Gothic architecture.
3. Saint Lawrence Gap – Best Area to Stay in Bridgetown For Nightlife
If you’re in Barbados to party, then you should stay at Saint Lawrence Gap, known as ‘The Gap’ amongst locals. Nowhere is the nightlife as vibrant as in this beachside neighbourhood packed with nightclubs and live music venues. Start the night sipping on a traditional Corn ‘n’ Oil cocktail by the beach as the sun sets over the sea, and drink coconut rum until the early hours of the morning.
I’d heard that Caribbeans could party, and my night at The Gap proved it! It’s also a great spot for any foodies out there as the neighbourhood is always alive with local food vendors cooking up island dishes that you won’t be able to resist!
White Sand Beach Condos | The Apartment With The Best Sea Views in The Gap
The noise from the bars and nightclubs in The Gap can get a bit much, so this beachfront hotel apartment was a welcome respite. The property is a short walk away from the liveliest music venues in The Gap, but far enough that you can’t hear the speakers blasting Calypso into the early hours! Sitting on the balcony watching the ocean waves crashing onto the shore over my morning coffee made my stay, and the outdoor pool is nice for taking a dip in.
Dover Court Apartments | The Best Option For Couples in The Gap
After a long night dancing to Soca, I was glad to have this cosy apartment to go home to. The kitchen was spotless, the living room was homely, and the outdoor patio was always sunny. Bright and spacious, it’s my top pick for any couple who are looking for somewhere to stay in The Gap that’s quiet but close to all the action!
Blue Haven Holiday Apartments | A Delightful Holiday Home Near The Gap
This spacious and modern studio apartment was super modern, and near to everything. The restaurants and clubs along The Gap are a short 5-minute walk away, and so is Dover Beach. There’s even an extra sofa bed, so if you’re a small group of friends in Bridgetown looking to party, you could save some money on your accommodation!
Things to See and Do in Saint Lawrence Gap
- Lounge your hangover away on Dover Beach.
- Follow the sound of music and find the best local nightlife. The best way to find the best nightclubs is always to listen out for live bands!
- Wander the neighbourhood in the evening, looking for the best street performers. You never know what you’ll find. I was lucky enough to catch someone fire juggling while I was in town.
- Get picked up from your hotel and spend a day out in the ocean snorkelling and sailing on a catamaran.
- Head to the Old Jamm, which always has live music or a DJ playing!

Rockley is a peaceful neighbourhood that is surrounded by stunning beaches where the kids can splash around and play whilst you get some much-needed downtime! It’s also a popular surfing spot on days when the wind picks up, so if you want to try your luck catching some waves, it’s the place to be.

Palm View 4 Flat | A Sophisticated Family Flat
This modern 2-bedroom flat is great for families. It’s got everything you’d need, even if you decided to stay in Bridgetown long-term. My favourite bit was the outdoor area with an al-fresco dining table where you can eat amongst the garden trees. It’s well located too, less than a 10-minute walk from the top beaches in the Rockley neighbourhood, Rockley Beach and Worthing Beach, so it was super easy to pack my snorkelling gear and go swimming with the island’s turtles!
Pirate’s Inn | Hotel Style Apartments With an Outdoor Pool
I loved the combination of staying at an apartment within a hotel. I had a private space to retreat to and all the amenities, like a kitchen, you could expect from a holiday home, along with hotel service, a bar, and a luxurious outdoor pool! You can get to the beach in no time, and the historical sites in the Garrison neighbourhood are within walking distance too.
Ventnor House Apartments | The Best Stay For Big Families
It can be hard finding accommodation when you’re a big family, so I was super happy when I found these apartment rentals. They have up to 3-bedroom properties that can comfortably fit a family of 6 people. You won’t have to compromise on location either, as the apartment is less than 10 minutes away on foot from Rockley Beach. The garden has a nice picnic area where you can relax in the su,n and the kids can run around.
Things to See and Do in Rockley
- Enjoy a slower pace of life at Rockley Beach. Rent a sun chair and umbrella and laze the day away.
- Rent a surfboard and try catching some waves on windier days!
- Wander along Richard Wayne’s Boardwalk and soak in the awesome views of the coast and ocean.
- Walk further along the coast to Worthing Beach, which has glistening white sand and crystal-clear waters.
- Hop in the water at Worthing Beach and go snorkelling. You can often spot turtles close to the water’s edge feeding on the beds of seaweed.
- Explore more of the island on a plantation tour. You’ll get to sample the beer and rum made on the island, learn about the local culture, and visit historical homes!

I couldn’t quite believe the ocean views from my hotel room in this property in St. Ann’s Garrison! From the balcony, I could watch the boats bobbing up and down in the bay as I sipped my morning coffee, cooled by the sea breeze. You won’t find anywhere closer to the beach either. As you walk past the luxurious pool area, your feet sink into the white sand of Needhams Point Beach.
Things to See and Do in St. Ann’s Garrison
- Visit the Barbados Museum & Historical Society. The museum is in an old 19th-century British Military Prison, which definitely adds to the museum’s wow factor!
- Walk around the George Washington House. It’s here that the first American president lived for two months in 1751. The bright yellow house was a plantation home in the 1700s.
- Take a historical tour of the neighbourhood guided by a local expert.
- Wander around the Garrison Savannah, a historical horse racing venue that opened back in the early 1800s. Around it there are old military hospitals and colonial barracks that are worth seeing too!
- Swim in the turquoise ocean and lounge the day away on Drill Hall Beach.
- Take a quick look at the Barbados Independence Monument at the Garrison Savannah – You can’t miss it as there’s a giant Barbados flag flying over it!
