I’ll admit it, before visiting Paphos I thought it was mostly going to be resorts, sun loungers, and a few ancient ruins thrown in for good measure.
Looking back, I’d sold it a bit short.
The funny thing about Paphos is that most people seem to arrive for the beaches and end up spending far more time exploring than they expected. Between the archaeological sites, harbour, tavernas, and coastal walks, there’s usually more going on than people give it credit for.
Ask five people where to stay in Paphos and you’ll probably get five different answers. That’s partly because different areas suit different types of trips, but also because everyone seems to fall in love with a different side of the city.

Kato Paphos
Kato Paphos is the best place to stay if it’s your first time visiting. Everything is right on your doorstep, from the harbour and beaches to ancient ruins, restaurants, and cafés, making it by far the easiest and most convenient base for exploring Paphos.
Ktima Paphos
If you’re looking to keep costs down, Ktima Paphos is an excellent choice. With a more local feel, affordable accommodation, and some of the best-value food in Paphos, it offers a great base just a short bus ride from the harbour and beaches.
Mousallas
If you want to be close to the best bars and restaurants in Paphos, Mousallas is a great place to stay. Set in the atmospheric old town, it combines lively evenings with plenty of character and a much more local feel than the seafront.
Chloraka
If you’re after somewhere a little more stylish and laid-back, Chloraka is a fantastic choice. With boutique stays, beautiful coastal views, and easy access to hikes like Avakas Gorge, it has a relaxed, under-the-radar feel that makes it one of the coolest places to stay in Paphos.
Yeroskipou
If you’re travelling with kids, Yeroskipou is a brilliant place to stay. With family-friendly hotels, a sandy beach, and a much quieter atmosphere than central Paphos, it makes for an easy and stress-free base.
A Guide to the Best Neighbourhoods in Paphos
Paphos is one of my favourite places to stay in Cyprus, and one of the reasons I love it so much is how easy it is to get around. While the wider district is spread out, the main tourist areas are compact and simple to explore on foot.
With mild temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and far fewer crowds, it’s also one of the best European winter sun destinations if you’re craving a beach break without a long-haul flight.
If it’s your first visit, I’d stay in Kato Paphos. This is the lively seafront area where you’ll find the harbour, beaches, archaeological sites, and loads of restaurants and cafés all within easy reach. If you’re travelling on a budget, Ktima is a great option. It sits in the upper town and feels much more local, with lower accommodation prices and a more authentic atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a bit of nightlife, I’d look at Mousallas, a historic part of the old town that’s close to bars, restaurants, and evening entertainment. But for something a bit more stylish and laid-back, Chloraka has a cool, up-and-coming feel with boutique hotels, dramatic coastal views, and a quieter pace. It’s just a short drive from the centre but feels much more relaxed.
And if you’re travelling with the kiddies, Yeroskipou is hard to beat. This traditional village has a slower pace, family-friendly resorts, and easy access to one of the best sandy beaches near Paphos. Each area has its own personality, so it really comes down to the kind of trip you want to have.
1. Kato Paphos – Where to Stay for your First Visit
Kato Paphos is the part of town most first-time visitors naturally gravitate towards, and for good reason. Set around the harbour and seafront, it puts you close to the beach, the main archaeological sites, and plenty of excellent places to eat (always a priority for me!).
You’ll be within walking distance of the picturesque harbour, Paphos Archaeological Park, and the famous Tombs of the Kings. There’s a lovely promenade along the coast, and the atmosphere is lively without ever feeling overwhelming.
It’s also a great choice if you’re backpacking in Cyprus, as there’s a wide range of accommodation and you won’t need a car to make the most of your stay.
For a first visit, I honestly don’t think you can go wrong with Kato Paphos.

You really can’t beat the location of this apartment. Right in the heart of Kato Paphos, you’ll be just a short walk from the beach, the harbour, and plenty of great restaurants and cafés.
The apartment is clean, spacious, and has everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a large double bed, a separate living area, and a fully equipped kitchen. There’s also a lovely terrace, which is the perfect spot for a drink before heading out for the evening.
Best Airbnb: Panoramic Seaview Studio
Wake up to beautiful views over Paphos Harbour and start your day with breakfast included (yes, you’re reading that right!) at the host’s restaurant. It’s a lovely option for couples, with a cosy bedroom, spacious bathroom, and fully equipped kitchen.
The location couldn’t be better. Right in the heart of Kato Paphos, you’ll be just steps from the harbour, beach, and plenty of great restaurants, bars, and cafés.
2. Ktima Paphos – Where to Stay on a Budget
If I were trying to keep costs down in Paphos, Ktima Paphos is exactly where I’d stay. Also known as Pano Paphos, this is the upper town and feels much more local than the seafront, with lower accommodation prices, budget-friendly tavernas, and a more authentic atmosphere overall.
I really like this part of town. Around Kennedy Square and the old market, you’ll find independent cafés, local shops, and some of the best-value food in Paphos. The nearby Moutallos neighbourhood is also worth exploring, with its characterful streets and laid-back feel.
It’s a particularly good option if you’re planning a bargain getaway in later months, when Paphos makes a fantastic winter sun destination and accommodation prices are often even better. You’re still only a short bus ride or drive from Kato Paphos and the beach, but you’ll get a much more local experience for a fraction of the cost.

Best Hostel: Bee Hostel Paphos
If you’re a solo traveller heading to Paphos, this is the place to be. Located in the heart of Paphos city, it’s a great choice to be in the thick of the action close to the train station with cafes, bars and restaurants nearby.
You’ve got the choice of mixed female or male-only dorms with decent beds, privacy curtains, fresh linen and towels, plus a locker to store your bags. A solid option for budget backpackers heading to Paphos, don’t miss out, as this place gets booked out.

This charming property in Drouseia offers a peaceful stay on the edge of the Akamas Peninsula. The studios are simple but comfortable, and guests can make use of the shared kitchen and swimming pool, making it a great-value choice for budget travellers looking to keep costs down.

I really love the feel of this part of town. It has loads of character, with historic streets, independent cafés, and a much more local atmosphere than the seafront. You’re close to all the action in Ktima Paphos, but it still feels authentic and a little bit hidden away.
By day, it’s fun to wander the surrounding streets and soak up the history. By night, everything you need is right on your doorstep. If you want somewhere lively but with a bit more personality, Mousallas is a brilliant choice.

If Kato Paphos feels a little too busy for your taste, I’d take a look at Chloraka. Just a short drive from the harbour, this laid-back coastal village has a much more relaxed feel and is one of the coolest places to stay in Paphos if you prefer boutique hotels, sea views, and a quieter atmosphere.
I really like Chloraka because it feels a bit more under the radar. You’ll find stylish villas and small hotels tucked along the coastline, a handful of excellent restaurants, and easy access to nearby spots like Peyia and Coral Bay. It’s also a great base for outdoor adventures, with Avakas Gorge, one of the best hiking trails in Cyprus, just a short drive away.
It’s the kind of place that suits travellers who want to dip into the sights and nightlife of Paphos, but come back to somewhere calmer at the end of the day. If you like your destinations a little less obvious, Chloraka is a fantastic choice.

If I were coming to Paphos with kids, Yeroskipou is probably where I’d stay. It’s just a short drive from Kato Paphos, but it feels much calmer, with family-friendly hotels, a lovely sandy beach, and a much more relaxed pace.
There’s a bit of history here, too. Yeroskipou is traditionally linked to the sacred gardens of Aphrodite, but these days it’s best known for its laid-back atmosphere, great local tavernas, and easy access to Yeroskipou Municipal Beach, which is one of the best beaches in the area for families.
Cyprus is generally a very safe place to travel, and Yeroskipou feels especially easy and stress-free. If you’re after a quieter base where the beach is close by and everything feels nice and straightforward, I think it’s a brilliant choice.
