There’s a bit of a stigma that budget travel is the more dangerous option, but travelling cheaply doesn’t mean travelling carelessly. Some budget destinations do come with a higher petty crime rate – things like scams and pickpockets – but exercising common caution is always recommended. Petty crime exists mostly around transport hubs or ATMs, so make sure to stay alert and avoid flashing your valuables or cash. 

Women should check local dress codes (for both cultural respect and safety reasons). It’s not something we should necessarily have to do, but unfortunately, it is a reality for solo female travellers. I also always recommend sharing your itinerary with someone back home (even your live location), and joining group tours when possible. There is always safety in numbers. Also, do yourself a favour and get travel insurance and carry digital (and printed out) copies of all your important documents. Keep a good eye on your belongings and say no to unofficial cabs and ‘guides’. 

The key is to base yourself in a few major cities or regions, then explore the surrounding regions by train, bus, or cheap domestic flights. It’s all about travelling smart, not fast. This way, you’re bound to see more, spend less, and soak up every experience along the way. Staying safe and connected is easy if you just take a few steps.

Why it’s awesome:

Cambodia is one of those places on everyone’s bucket list, mostly because of its abundant temple complexes, including the famous Angkor Wat. But it’s also an incredible place to travel on a budget for those looking for a good dose of culture. Throw in some pristine beaches, a lush countryside, and some of the friendliest people in SE Asia, and it’s a no-brainer when it comes to places to visit in December.

What to do there:

Since we’re talking about an entire country here, there is enough to do and see in Cambodia to keep you occupied for weeks. First and foremost when it comes to travel tips for Cambodia; book your slot at the famous Angkor Wat temple complex, as well as other ancient temple ruins like Ta Prohm. Next, you’ll want to insert yourself into a little bit of local life. Try the food, speak to as many locals as possible, and listen to their recommendations. 

How to visit:

To visit Cambodia, you’ll need both a valid passport and a visa. For most nationalities, this visa can be obtained online or even on arrival. Cambodia still uses hard cash, often accepting USD on top of the local currency. It’s always a good idea to travel with cash. The main airport used to be the Phnom Penh International Airport, but has recently been replaced by the Techo International Airport. 

#2. Oaxaca, Mexico – A Cheap December Destination for Lively Festivals and Celebrations

Why it’s awesome:

Mexico has plenty of wonderful cities, but Oaxaca is one of the most vibrant cultural hubs in Central America, with some incredibly interesting points of interest in December. It’s got a deeply rich indigenous history, evident in the colourful buildings (and colonial architecture) and is also a super safe place to visit. It’s also a hotspot for foodies, with one of Mexico’s most established culinary scenes.

What to do there:

The best way to explore Oaxaca is to walk, eat, and talk. Walk the colourful streets around Zocalo (the main square), taste all the street food you can get your hands on, and chat to as many locals as possible – after all, they will have the best recommendations. The most famous attractions include the ancient Zapotec capital of Monte Alban and the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua. 

How to visit:

The main airport serving Oaxaca is Oaxaca International Airport, officially known as Xoxocotlan. This hub connects the city with other major Mexican cities and a fair share of U.S. cities, including Houston. Another popular option is to take a bus from Mexico City. Once in Oaxaca, the city is best explored on foot, with local taxis and buses available for longer journeys – both of which are affordable.

#3. Thailand – A Cheap December Destination for Beaches, Culture and Food

Why it’s awesome:

What makes Thailand so special in December is its weather. Despite relatively higher flight and accommodation costs (something we can always get around as savvy budget travellers), the weather is sunny but not overwhelmingly hot, dry, and offers little risk of monsoon showers. Beyond the weather, it’s an incredible place to visit for food and temple hopping.

What to do there:

Most people visit Thailand for the warm weather, tropical beaches and beautiful island hopping adventures. Crystal clear water, white sand, and lush jungle islands provide the perfect setting for a beach vacation. It’s also a known affordable place to travel during December. But more than that, Thailand is known for its opulent royal palaces and ornate ruins, often clad in golden mosaics. Visit the temples at Wat Arun and Wat Pho, and don’t forget to check out the Emerald Buddha Temple.

How to visit:

Depending on where you plan to visit, there are a bunch of international airports in Thailand. Two of the most popular places to arrive are Bangkok (the country’s capital city) and Phuket (known as the heart of Thailand’s tropical beaches). Most passport holders can enter visa-free, spending up to 60 days in the country. A tip for Thailand is that this is another country worth carrying cash with you. Markets and informal shops are often open to bartering, many of which aren’t equipped with card machines.

December marks the beginning of peak season in Jamaica, which means it technically isn’t the most affordable time to visit. That said, Jamaica is never a bad idea, and with its unique blend of culture and natural beauty, there are always ways to cut costs on the island. Jamaica is the birthplace of reggae music, home to some of the world’s fastest runners, and is known for two famous beverages – coffee and rum.

What to do there:

Drink rum punch on the beach and dance to reggae music as the sun sets. The island is the birthplace of the Rastafari movement, one of the most undeniably coolest cultures. Spend some time getting to know the people of Jamaica, exploring the beautiful beaches, rainforests and mountains along the way. In fact, Jamaica is particularly well known for its waterfalls – some December must-sees include the famous Dunn’s River Falls and Blue Hole amongst the many things to do in Jamaica during this time of year.

How to visit:

Since December is the start of the busy summer season, it’s essential you book your accommodation and flights well in advance to ensure the best rates. Consider travelling in early December to avoid the real rush (which starts mid-December). Unless you’re on a cruise ship, you’ll need to fly to the island. Once there, there is a network of buses known as the Knutsford Express linking major towns and hubs. For more off-the-beaten-track destinations, minibuses are the answer.

#5. Sri Lanka – The Best Country for a December Beach Vacation

Why it’s awesome:

Sri Lanka is a large island nation located just below the Indian mainland, and December is a great time to visit. It’s famous for its golden beaches, calm water, and incredible surfing conditions that attract surfers from across the globe. The landscape from one part of the island to the next changes dramatically. You can explore tea plantations one day, tropical beaches the next, and end up in the heart of Colombo (the capital city).

What to do there:

If I had to recommend just a handful of things to do in Sri Lanka, it would be to explore the beaches (particularly around Bentota and Mirissa), visit some of the famous national parks like Yala and Udawalawe (where you’ll be able to walk with elephants), spot elusive leopards and even explore ancient ruins. Previously known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is one of the world’s biggest tea growers. Sip your way through the tea plantations and experience the absolute calm of these expansive farms. This is a must-do in Sri Lanka in December.

How to visit:

The most common way to enter the country is to fly into Colombo. From here, you can jump off to different beach towns, central regions, and the famous tea plantations by car, train, or even bus. The famous train between Kandy and Ella is one of the most scenic in the world. If you get a chance to move between these two towns, do yourself a favour and take the train.

#6 – Vrdnik, Serbia – A Cheap Balkan Destination

Why it’s awesome:

If you have the Balkans on your bucket list, December is the cheapest time to travel in Serbia. This little Serbian town is a luxury spa and wellness centre, with a good mix of natural beauty, history, and modern spa luxury. The little town is surrounded by a national park called the Fruška Gora National Park, which means there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling in nature.

What to do there:

The main reason people visit Vrdnik is for the spa and thermal baths. Its waters are known to help with rehabilitation, featuring indoor and outdoor pools set amongst a range of different budget-friendly accommodations. When you aren’t indulging at the spa, spend some time exploring the Fruška Gora National Park, a park within which the town is actually located. There is also a historic monastery and some incredible food to try in the region.

How to visit:

Vrdnik is a short drive from Novi Sad, which is the closest major city in northern Serbia (just across the national park). The nearest main airport would be in the capital of Belgrade, which is around 48 miles away by car. There is no regular public transport travelling between Belgrade and Vrdnik, so you’ll either have to rent a car, hire a cab for the one-hour drive, or join a guided tour.

#7. Gjirokaster, Albania – A Cheap Historic Town in Europe

• Explore the Ottoman-era cobblestone streets of the UNESCO-listed town
• Visit the Ethnographic Museum
• In a valley between the Gjerë mountains and the Drino
• Pack warm clothes and layers

Why it’s awesome:

Gjirokaster, in an inland valley of Albania, is one of the most well-preserved Ottoman-era towns in the region. Its old town is UNESCO listed, with distinctive stone houses with slate roofs that earn the town the nickname of the ‘City of Stone’. Everything is perfectly preserved, from over-the-top Ottoman mansions to a 12th-century castle (easily one of the best places to travel in Albania in December), reflecting the rich history of the empire back in the 15th century.

What to do there:

Start by exploring the city’s Old Bazaar, which is the centre of the historic area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site scattered with historic homes and buildings. Once you’ve visited a few stone homes and walked through the Gjirokaster Castle, settle in for some food. This town is particularly well-known for its Albanian cuisine, many recipes of which have been passed down from generation to generation.

How to visit:

To get to Gjirokaster, you’ll need to fly into a nearby airport like Tirana or Vlora (or even an international airport in Greece). From these airports, buses, taxis, or even rental cars can be used to drive to the inland village in Albania’s mountains. I recommend staying right in the old town, so you can walk from your accommodation to the centre for easy access to the major sites and restaurants. 

#8. Georgia – A Cheap Country to Visit for Culture

• Visit Tbilisi, the capital city
• Georgia is the original birthplace of wine – try some!

Why it’s awesome:

Georgia is one of the few places in Europe where you can ski without breaking the bank. Unlike the Alps, this is one of the most affordable places to travel in December for a ski trip. With the Caucasus Mountains sitting at a high altitude, snow is reliable starting from December. Since this isn’t peak ski season (yet), it means things are kept even more affordable. 

What to do there:

This is one of the most underrated, affordable places to ski in Europe. Visit the ski resorts like Gudauri and Bakuriani, both with off-piste and groomed runs that cater to a range of levels. If you time your trip with a winter storm, you could be treated to high-quality powder. Off the slopes? There are tons of other ways to keep busy in winter, from exploring historic sites to wine tasting in one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world.

How to visit:

Most international tourists will arrive in the capital city of Tbilisi. With Christmas and New Year’s around the corner, December is one of the more expensive months to fly, but it’s all relative when compared with the slopes of Switzerland or France. Once in the country, you can either rent a car or use taxis and rideshare apps to get around. For example, Tbilisi to Bakuriani is a 114-mile drive, just under three hours by car.

#9. Cape Town, South Africa – Best Budget Escape to Summer

• Visit the ‘Deep South’, a part of the city with fewer tourists
• December is the peak summer season
• Explore the Kirstenbosch Gardens to see the fynbos in full bloom
• Take a day trip to the winelands

Why it’s awesome:

Cape Town is in its peak season in December. While this does mean prices soar for international travellers, South Africa is still relatively easy on the wallet when converting from USD or Euros. Cape Town comes alive in December with festivals and parties just about every night, busy beaches that are so beautiful, you’ll struggle to find better, and delicious food.

What to do there:

Spend your days hopping between the December landmarks in Cape Town – the beaches, the wine farms, and the mountain. Hiking is a popular way to start a day in Cape Town – so popular, you’ll find locals getting their morning exercise in the mountains. The beaches are crowded this time of year, but that only makes it more lively. Make sure to explore the entire city and not just the city centre. There is so much to see and do that lies just beyond the tourist track – and that’s coming from a local.

How to visit:

Cape Town International Airport is the only airport you can fly into in the Western Cape. It welcomes flights from across the world (some via Johannesburg), and is a quick 20-minute drive from the city. Once in the city, do yourself a favour and rent a car. Public transport hardly exists, and Uber gets expensive in December. You’ll need to drive a lot. Also, book your accommodation and flights as early as possible. Like I said, this is peak season!

#10. The Philippines – Affordable Place for Beautiful Natural Wonders and Landscapes

• Swim in the turquoise lagoons around El Nido and Coron
• Island hop down Palawan on a boat tour
• The locals are incredibly welcoming here
• The country is home to more than 7100 islands

Why it’s awesome:

The Philippines is one of those spots that sits towards the top of just about every bucket list. It’s a tropical archipelago of islands that look like paradise on paper. And in reality, this island nation is just as impressive. December marks the start of the cooler, dry season, which means comfortable weather that makes it possible to island hop and do outdoor activities without sweating yourself into a pool of madness. 

What to do there:

No matter the season, the Philippines is a great, affordable place to visit. The exchange rate will probably be in your favour, with incredible value for money when it comes to accommodations, food, and excursions. The one thing I recommend you do here is book an island-hopping boat tour through Palawan. You’ll explore islands and islets that have never been inhabited by man – it’s quite the experience.

How to visit:

The Philippines has a few major airports, mainly in Manila and Cebu. Most international arrivals arrive in Manila. Flights can be affordable when booked in advance, but December is one of the more popular times to visit. Once in the country, getting around cities involves public transport like open-air tuk-tuks, cabs, and to get from one island to the next, you’ll need to either fly or travel via boat (or ferry for longer distances).

#11. Ghana – An Affordable Trip for History and Nature

• The first Sub-Saharan African country to gain independence
• Walk the Canopy Bridge at the Kakum National Park
• Home to the world’s largest man-made lake
• Watch the sunset from the surf at Busua Beach

Why it’s awesome:

Ghana is one of the least-visited countries on this list. But it’s not to be underestimated. Travellers can enjoy beautiful weather, beaches, and an incredible cultural scene set along the Ghanaian Atlantic coastline. December is known as the best time of year for nightlife, with a spate of festivals that bring in some of Africa’s best musicians. 

What to do there:

Spend some time exploring the capital city of Accra. Here, you can visit local markets, eat delicious food, and admire the colourful local fashion. In fact, Afrochella is held in December, a festival that brings together art, food, music, and fashion in a series of events and parties. Then head off along the coastline, lined with seafront resorts and bonfire-lit beach parties. Yes, it’s as cool as it sounds. 

How to visit:

Travelling within Africa isn’t the cheapest, but once there, the favourable exchange rate makes it one of the best cheap places to travel in December. You’ll likely fly into Accra’s Kotoka International Airport, which welcomes flights from Amsterdam and Ethiopia, among other major airlines. Public buses are supposedly safe and affordable, suitable for both long and short-haul journeys.

#12. Eger, Hungary – A Cheap Spa Destination for Hot Springs

• 18th-century Turkish baths and mineral pools
• A religious centre of Hungary with preserved Baroque architecture 
• Visit the Beatles Museum
• Famous for producing wine

Why it’s awesome:

Hungary is cold in winter. But December offers a festive vibe with Christmas markets, gorgeous lights, and seasonal events all without the high price tag of the equivalent major cities like Paris and London. It’s likely to snow during the month, which adds to the Christmas atmosphere. This northern Hungarian city has plenty of attractions to explore, including 18th-century Turkish mineral baths and a nearly 1000-year-old wine-making history.

What to do there:

Visit the Eger Christmas Market and sip mulled wine while browsing sweet treats and handicrafts. I’d also recommend doing a city tour and exploring the historic castle overlooking the city. But most importantly, you’re going to want to spend most of your time between Eger’s famous thermal baths. Some are outdoor terraced pools with natural hot springs, while others have been redirected into large swimming pools.

How to visit:

Eger is under two hours from Budapest, a trip that can be done by bus, private car, or train. Trains are efficient and affordable, and my personal preference when travelling through Europe. Once in the city, explore Budapest on foot or, for a fun option, scan to use a Lime Bike. Pack layers. December is the beginning of winter in Europe, and the weather will be cold, wet, and potentially a bit snowy.

#13. Lithuania – A Cheap Country to Visit for Snowy Landscapes

Why it’s awesome:

December marks the beginning of winter in Lithuania, with temperatures hovering around the freezing mark. But with the cold comes a festive vibe like no other. The cities and towns are strung with lights, scattered with Christmas markets, and host special events to celebrate the end of the year. The festivities are particularly common around Vilnius, Kaunas, and Siauliai.

What to do there:

Lithuania is a cultural hotspot with a fascinating history. The UNESCO-listed Old Town in Vilnius is a good place to start your tour. Make sure you visit the Trakai Island Castle (which truly looks like it’s from a fairytale), just outside of the city centre. Visit the art and history museums, and to warm up, spend your afternoons in a traditional Lithuanian sauna. Since the country is so small, it’s a top place to visit in December in three days.

How to visit:

Much of Eastern Europe has been affected by recent warfare, but Lithuania is still safe to travel to. It is noted as ‘Level 1 Travel Advisory – Exercise Normal Precaution’ by the U.S. Department of State. While December still falls before peak snow season, the weather can be wet. Bring waterproof shoes and jackets to be prepared for anything.

#14. Nepal – The Best Destination for Adventures

• Trek the Annapurna Circuit (maybe reaching Everest Base Camp)
• Stop at the tea house rest stops on the mountain trails
• An affordable place to hike with a sherpa
• Winter mountain weather can be unpredictable at high altitudes

Why it’s awesome:

There are a lot of people who think the only thing to do in Nepal is to hike Everest. And while this is a popular activity, the country is filled with so many more incredible things to see. December is cool and dry, with freezing nights around the Himalayas. Mountains, trekking, and hiking aside, Nepal is the official birthplace of Lord Buddha. As a Hindu-majority country, many people refer to Nepal as the ‘Country of Temples’.

What to do there:

Sure, the country is best known for its Himalaya mountains, home to eight of the world’s ten highest peaks. So, you will want to bring your hiking boots and explore a few of them. If you aren’t up to climbing a mountain, you can also visit the Chitwan National Park and do some more mellow treks. The Kathmandu Valley is a cultural hub, home to three ancient cities, each with historic temples and interesting sites to check out. There are endless reasons to visit Nepal.

How to visit:

More often than not, visitors travel to Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, usually connecting with a flight from a major airport hub. When you’re in the country, there are affordable buses and microbuses to get you around the incredible landscape. Accommodations range from budget guesthouses to high-end hotels, all of which are relatively affordable compared with Western countries’ inflated prices.

#15. Czech Republic – Most Charming Place to Visit in December

• Prague’s Christmas markets are magical and less pricey than those in Western Europe’s
• Off-season means affordable places to stay close to the Old Town
• Sip Pilsner and other local beers

Why it’s awesome:

Czechia is another one of those beautiful European countries dotted with exquisite castles, gardens, and ancient cities. The capital of Prague is particularly famous for its beer production, glass-making, and a history of war and royalty. In fact, the country is known for having more castles than any other European country, with more than 2000 to show for. Prague Castle (well worth the climb up the hill, by the way) is actually the world’s largest ancient castle.

What to do there:

There is so much to do in this beautiful country, from exploring the old cobblestone streets of the historic cities, to going on a castle tour through the countryside, to learning about the local crystal and puppet-making traditions. Education-wise, it’s home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1348. The country also has more than 24 thousand miles of marked hiking trails – great for winter adventure-seekers.

How to visit:

Czechia is located right in the heart of Central Europe, bordered by Germany, Poland, Slovakia, and Austria. This means this famous place to visit in December is well connected to the rest of the continent by train, with the central Prague station serving as the main rail hub. You can also arrive by plane at one of the many regional airports (or Prague’s international airport).

It’s also known for its diamond mines and a dramatic Atlantic coastline known as the Skeleton Coast because of all the shipwrecks that have landed there.

What to do there:

Visit the desert and marvel at the vast, untouched landscapes on your unforgettable trip to Namibia. You can join a 4×4 tour to get right into the action, and even sandboard on the rolling dunes. The Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world, home to the iconic red dunes called Sossusvlei. Visit Etosha National Park, one of southern Africa’s most prized wildlife sanctuaries with a particularly healthy cheetah population. December is hot and rainy, which means the grasslands are lush and new animals are being born in the park. It’s magical.

How to visit:

This isn’t the easiest country to visit or get around, and you’ll need a proper plan of action and booked tours before arriving. It is possible to drive around on your own, but expert vehicles and emergency gear are required in case you get stuck in the middle of nowhere. Rather, join an organised tour with a guide who knows how to see this cheap place in December. 

#17. Dubrovnik, Croatia – A Cheap Place to Visit for Christmas

Why it’s awesome:

You might know the medieval town of Dubrovnik for its role (as inspiration and filming) as the fictional town of King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. But this city is all too real. Set along the country’s glistening coastline, it’s become a major tourist destination known as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, for its history, culture, and UNESCO World Heritage Site-listed Old Town. Once upon a time, the city used to be its own state, which accounts for all the massive stone walls and armoured port guarding the city.

What to do there:

Start by hitting the landmarks in the Old Town, including Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, and the Dubrovnik Cathedral. The Franciscan Monastery is home to one of the oldest pharmacies in the world and shouldn’t be left off your Dubrovnik itinerary. For a little relaxation and rejuvenation, Dubrovnik’s beaches are second to none. Check out the Plaza Sveti Jakov, Uvala Lapad, and Copacabana Beaches for golden sand and clear water.

How to visit:

December is the start of winter in the Adriatic, which means cooler weather, fewer crowds, and more affordable prices. Lots of day tourists visit the city on cruise liners. While not as common in December, this means that the crowds usually thin out in the evenings. The town has its own airport (outside of the old city, of course), easily connecting Dubrovnik with the rest of Europe.

From Marrakech to Casablanca, this northern African nation has one of the most vibrant cultures in the world, famous for its bustling souks and medinas in it’s busting cities and towns, gorgeous architecture (now replicated across the world), and traditional handicrafts like leather goods, lanterns, and handwoven carpets.

What to do there:

Visit Chefchaouen, otherwise known as the Blue City, to explore the picturesque blue-painted old town. Moroccan locals are known for their hospitality and delicious cooking. Eat tagine, cooked in the unique clay pots, cous cous, and drink delicious fresh mint tea out of piping hot silver pots. I’m a big fan of a market, so you’d find me exploring every souk and marketplace I can find (there are plenty in Marrakech). 

How to visit:

Winter is cooler and more manageable for tourists, making it one of the best times to hike through the Atlas Mountains and explore the diverse scenery, like desert dunes and coastal towns around Essaouira. Plan your transport in advance. Private transfers and tour guides are a good way to go. The country’s biggest airports can be found in Casablanca and Marrakesh, with Agadir Al Massira functioning as the main gateway to the southern coastline.

Why it’s awesome:

Cyprus is a small island that sits in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, just off the coast of the Middle East. It might be best known for its mythical connection to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, but it is most loved for its gorgeous beaches and natural beauty.

What to do there:

Cyprus has some ‘Blue Flag’ recognised beaches, which are praised for their cleanliness. When you’re not lounging about on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, take a deep dive into the rich cultural history and mythological importance of the island, which has been influenced by the Greeks, Romans, and British. In winter, the Troodos Mountains offer plenty of opportunities to hike (and even ski) without the scorching summer heat weighing you down.

How to visit:

Cyprus is a great option for a cheap place to travel in December because it’s the island’s low season, which means more affordable prices for flights and hotels. It also means fewer crowds and mild weather, ideal for those who don’t care too much about a tan. That said, check that the tourist attractions you want to see are open, as some may close for the season. The same goes for accommodation, with lots of places closing up shop over the low season.

#20. Montenegro – A Cheap Place for Warm Winter Weather

• Coastal towns around Budva are cheap and quiet in December
• Explore the Bay of Kotor
• Local ski resorts are more affordable than those in Western Europe
• Enjoy inexpensive seafood by the sea

Why it’s awesome:

I won’t lie, for a good portion of my youth, I thought Montenegro was a fictional European country. But it’s all too real and I have infact been backpacking in Montenegro! set along the stunning Adriatic coastline with a gorgeous mix of natural beauty and rich history, it’s an incredible little country with a lot to offer. One of the best places to visit is Kotor Bay, which looks like the fjords of Norway – just with warmer water and different architecture. 

What to do there:

Explore the small country, visiting towns like Kotor and Perast along the way. It’s not hard to spend your entire time in the Bay of Kotor, but I really recommend renting a car and road-tripping to Lake Skadar, Budva Old Town, and even to the Durmitor Alps in the northwestern part of the country. 

How to visit:

Once you’re in the country, there are plenty of ways to get around without breaking the bank. I recommend renting a car for maximum flexibility. The country is small, so even a long-distance drive won’t take too long in this top place to visit in December on a budget. There are tons of scenic coastal drives to experience in your own time. That said, you can also take buses and use taxis for trips within cities. Just make sure you agree on a fare or that the driver uses a meter.

#21. Guatemala – Best Budget Central American Destination for December

• December is the dry season, great for hiking volcanic mountains
• Hostels and cheap, and ‘chicken’ buses make it easy to save money
• Wander the streets of Antigua and visit the villages around Lake Atitlan
• Use official transport at night and ask about safe neighbourhoods

Why it’s awesome:

Guatemala is one of the few Central American countries on this list, but one of many worth visiting at the end of the year. It’s a great cheap place to travel in December, especially if you’re into beautiful natural scenery and history. The country is known for its Mayan heritage, with the ancient ruins of Tikal being a major highlight. Between the volcanoes, deep lakes, and diverse ecosystems, there is plenty to explore around here.

What to do there:

Like many Central American countries, Guatemala has a coastline on both the Pacific and Caribbean seas. Between the coastlines, there are incredible colonial cities like Antigua to explore, Mayan ruins to learn about (Tikal is the most famous, but by no means the only one), and lakes to dive into. For adventurous budget travellers, it’s also a great place for hiking, with countless volcanoes like Acatenango and Pacaya boasting incredible views from the top.

How to visit:

Guatemala sits just underneath Mexico, with many of its arrival flights coming from Mexico City of Guadalajara. Most flights arrive at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City (which I recommend you spend some time exploring, too). From here, catch a shuttle or bus to other landmarks in Guatemala. Tourist shuttles are called ‘chicken buses’ here, but it’s not recommended to drive at night because of poor road conditions.

#22. Rishikesh, India – Best for Yoga & Wellness on a Budget

• December is a great time for an off-season yoga retreat in India
• Escape the hustle and bustle in quieter areas around Rishikesh
• Stay in an ashram
• Drink lots of warm chai to stay warm on cooler days

Why it’s awesome:

India is like a world in its own right. Each region is totally unique – both geographically and culturally. Rishikesh, a small town that sits along the holy Ganges River, is known for its spiritual significance, particularly for being the ‘yoga capital of the world’. It’s a gateway to local pilgrimage sites but also happens to be a hotspot for adventure tourism. 

What to do there:

Check into an ashram, unplug from your devices, and reconnect with yourself. Rishikesh has become quite a spiritual hotspot in recent years, so December, though slightly colder, is a great time to avoid the crowds. When you aren’t practising yoga and eating clean, explore the holy land, and do some adventure sports like white water rafting and even hiking through the surrounding hills. The cooler weather makes hiking all the more pleasant. If you’ve visited India in summer, you’ll know how important this is.

How to visit:

The Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the closest airport to Rishikesh. It’s a short 30-minute drive (or slightly longer bus ride) south of the airport. Another popular option is to travel from Delhi, which is around 6 hours away by bus. Once in Rishikesh, the town is small and walkable, with local rickshaws to help you out on longer trips. Book your ashram stay well in advance since it can be hard to get a spot at a good ashram.

#23. Uluwatu, Indonesia – Best for Surfing & Scenic Ocean Views

• Visit the Uluwatu Temple overlooking the sea from a high cliff
• Learn to surf at Padang Padang Beach
• Enjoy the Balinese food and the health-food trend sweeping through the island
• Stay in a cliffside villa for gorgeous views of the sunset

Why it’s awesome:

Uluwatu is one of my favourite places in Bali. It’s located right on the edge of the Bukit Peninsula at the south of the island, with dramatic cliffs dropping into picture-perfect, clear water and incredible beaches. Surfers visit for the iconic left-hander wave, but beach goers and nightlife fans will have just as much fun in this cheap place to visit in December. 

What to do there:

Uluwatu is a beach town with cliffside warungs (restaurants) and bars. Spend your days between the beach at Padang Padang, Bingin, and Greenland, and even venture through the cliffs to the small beach at Uluwatu itself. Visit the Uluwatu Temple, and be sure to hold onto your valuables – the monkeys here are cheeky ad will rob you in exchange for some food – no jokes. Stay in homestays or budget-friendly hostels. Considering the high quality, everything feels affordable here.

How to visit:

Although not far from Denpasar (the capital city and home of the only airport on the island), it can take a long time to travel from the airport to Uluwatu with traffic and narrow roads. Take a cab from the airport and agree on a fixed price beforehand (it’s usually the same price for all cabs). Once in Uluwatu, rent a scooter, and be super careful when driving it around the local beaches and coastal towns. Uber’s aren’t ‘welcome’ in Bali, but they do exist. Rather, get the contact of your airport cab driver and call them on a private basis to book longer drives.

#24. The Kruger National Park, South Africa – For a Budget-Friendly Safari

• December is hot and wet during summer
• Do a self-drive safari and stay at affordable lodges
• Summer rains bring abundant birdlife and lots of new wildlife births
• Pack lots of insect repellent and take lightweight rain jackets for summer rains

Why it’s awesome:

We’ve covered Cape Town as one of the top cheap places to travel in December, but no trip to South Africa is complete without a safari. The Kruger National Park is one of the best places to do one, known for its Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) populations and rich cultural sites with San rock art. The park has more than 255 archaeological sites, including Iron Age settlements.

What to do there:

Go on safari! Pick a camp and book an all-inclusive stay if you can afford to. I recommend spending at least three nights in the park. In a lodge stay, you’ll get all meals and two game drives a day included in your rate. It’s not exactly cheap, but it almost guarantees the wildlife viewings you’ll be there for. You can also enter the park in your own rental car and camp at budget campsites.

How to visit:

The most direct option is to fly into Skukuza, a small airport in the northern part of the country, and hire a car there. Skukuza is technically inside the park itself. The cheaper option would be to fly into Johannesburg (which welcomes flights from all over the world) and rent a car and drive from there. The road is well-maintained, just be aware of the park gate opening and closing times. You’ll need to pay a daily conservation fee, which is around $30 per person per day for international visitors.

Contrary to popular belief, these cheap places to travel in December don’t require cutting corners, but are more about making smarter choices. December might be one of the busiest times of the year to travel to certain places, but there are always ways to save on accommodation, tours, and flights. The key is to go in with an open mind and a relatively flexible schedule (seriously, flights can differ by the thousand one day to the next when travelling on a budget in December).
