For decades, Halkidiki has been winning people over with its laid-back vibe and ridiculously clear water. If you’re backpacking in Greece, it’s well worth adding to your route. Think emerald seas, pine forests, and soft white sand, it really does feel like a proper Mediterranean escape.

It’s not as hyped as Santorini or Mykonos, which I think is part of the appeal. It still feels a bit more under the radar internationally, and generally better value too, especially with the increasing Greek prices on the more famous islands.

Kassandra is where most of the action is. It’s the liveliest part, with beach bars, nightlife, and loads of easy-access beaches. There’s a huge range of places to stay, making it an easy pick for first-timers.

Central Halkidiki often gets overlooked, but it’s quieter, more local, and usually more affordable, a good option if you want a slower pace.

Sithonia is a completely different vibe again, more relaxed, a bit more rugged, and home to some of the best beaches in the region. It’s ideal if you want space, nature, and a quieter stay, with a mix of boutique spots and higher-end hotels along the coast.

1. Kassandra Peninsula – Where to Stay for Your First Time

They don’t call Kassandra the heart of the action for nothing. It’s the busiest part of Halkidiki, with loads going on and plenty to see and do. Getting around is fairly easy with buses connecting the main towns, which makes it a solid base if it’s your first time here.

It does get busy in summer, but that’s also the best time to visit Greece if you’re after guaranteed sunshine, hot beach days, and lively evenings.

The beaches here just go on and on (and on and on!), stretching from Paliouri in the south up to Kallithea in the north, with plenty of lively spots and quieter corners in between.

If you’re into nightlife, you’ll have no problem here. Kassandra has one of the liveliest scenes in the region, and people even head down from Thessaloniki for a night out in peak season.

And when it comes to places to stay, you’re spoiled for choice; everything from big beachfront resorts to smaller, laid-back apartments is available.

1. Unleash your inner explorer by checking out some of Kassandra’s historic spots, including the tower at Sani, the ruins of the Sanctuary of Poseidon, and the Byzantine tower in Nea Fokea.
2. Spend a day snorkelling around Kassandra. The water is incredibly clear, and you can often just head straight in from the beach.
3. Try scuba diving if you want to go a bit deeper. There are plenty of beginner-friendly dive spots, and visibility is usually excellent.
4. With its stone houses and sea views, the old village of Afitos is easily one of the prettiest stops in Kassandra.
5. When it comes to beaches, you’re spoiled for choice. Kallithea Beach and Hanioti Beach are the more lively options, while Possidi Beach and Glarokavos Beach are a bit more laid-back. For something more polished, Sani Beach is always a good shout.
6. If you want a break from the beach, head to Loutra and relax in the natural thermal spa. The sulfur-rich water is known for its soothing, therapeutic feel…say aaaaah!

It doesn’t get much cooler than this…a refurbished stone house turned into a hotel. You’re within walking distance of not one but two beaches, plus there’s a lovely courtyard to relax in. The host is great, and it’s really close to restaurants and shops, so everything’s on your doorstep. It’s easily one of the most authentic places to stay in town.

This modern, minimalist Kassandria apartment is perfect for anyone looking for some peace and tranquillity during their trip! As you explore, you’ll come across traditional villages like Arnaia, with stone houses, small squares, and proper local tavernas. It’s a much more authentic, everyday side of Halkidiki that most people don’t see.

It’s also a great area for scenic drives, hiking, and cycling, especially as the landscape shifts from coastline to forested hills. For something a bit different, you can visit Petralona Cave, one of the more interesting natural sights in the region.

Perhaps the biggest draw, though, is the value, with food and accommodation generally more affordable than the busier parts of Halkidiki. It’s a good option if you want to experience the area without the crowds or higher prices…yamas to that!

4. For something a bit more dramatic, head to Kavourotrypes Beach, with its turquoise water, rocky coves, and a slightly wilder feel.
5. If you prefer somewhere quieter, Fava Beach is a great shout. It’s more low-key, so bring what you need and make a day of it.

It’s a great all-round base, with easy access to all three peninsulas, plus plenty of accommodation and things to do. On top of that, it’s usually more affordable than the busier areas, which makes it a bit of a win all round right? Yamas!
