Milan has plenty of hostels, but as with any big city, some are absolute gems and others are best left to the more adventurous among us.

Ostello Bello is one of those places where it’s obvious within about five minutes that you’ve picked well. There’s a free welcome drink, endless coffee, terraces with hammocks, a cinema room, and enough nightly events to ensure you’re never short of company. If you arrive in Milan not knowing a soul, there’s a very good chance you’ll be belting out karaoke with new friends before the night is over.

It’s one of the pricier hostels in Milan, and with so much going on, early nights can be a bit optimistic. But when you’re staying right next to Milano Centrale Railway Station, with the rest of Milan and half of Italy practically on your doorstep, it’s very hard not to feel like you’ve chosen well.

2. YellowSquare – Best Party Hostel

YellowSquare Milan is the kind of hostel where you arrive planning to “just have a quiet night” and somehow end up at a live gig in a converted chapel. (I’m actually not making that up!) The whole place has a fun, creative energy, with coworking spaces, yoga classes, and nightly events that make it ridiculously easy to meet people. If you like your hostels with a bit of personality and a healthy dose of chaos, you’ll probably love it.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Seriously Social: Daily events, live music, and plenty of communal spaces make meeting people ridiculously easy.
• More Than Just a Hostel: Coworking areas, yoga classes, a salon, and concerts give the place a lot of personality.
• Well Connected: It’s a little outside the centre, but the metro and trams make getting around Milan very straightforward.

The layout can feel a bit like an escape room, and the metal bunk beds are not exactly shy about announcing every toss and turn. But with the metro just around the corner and Milan’s best sights within easy reach, it’s a brilliant base if you want somewhere lively, creative, and never short on surprises.

3. Combo Milano – Best Budget Hostel

Combo Milano is proof that budget-friendly doesn’t have to mean beige walls and questionable mattresses. The whole place feels bright, modern, and thoughtfully designed, with a lovely café downstairs and plenty of space to relax with a coffee and plan your next aperitivo. Set right in Navigli, you’re surrounded by canals, bars, and some of Milan’s best evening hangouts.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Fantastic Neighbourhood: Navigli is one of the city’s best spots for canals, cocktails, and people-watching.

It’s not the most social hostel in town, and you’ll need to hop on the metro or enjoy a short walk to reach some of the main sights. But while Combo Milano isn’t exactly dirt cheap, it offers excellent value in a city where even a quick coffee and pastry can make you check your bank balance. If you’d rather spend your money on spritzes and gelato than on your bed for the night, it’s a very smart choice.

4. Ostello Bello Milano Duomo – Best for Solo Travellers

If you’re heading to Milan on your own, Ostello Bello Duomo makes things very easy. And with the Duomo di Milano just a short walk away, you can spend less time figuring out the city and more time enjoying it.

Rooms can feel a little snug, and if you’re storing food in the communal kitchen, you may want to label it clearly, especially if you’re emotionally attached to your sandwich (#Friends – IYKYK). 5. Madama Hostel & Bistrot – Best Eco-Friendly Hostel

Madama Hostel & Bistrot is anything but boring. You’re sleeping in a former police station that’s now covered in colourful murals, recycled furniture, and enough street art to make it feel like someone turned an art gallery into a hostel (and then added a very good bistrot downstairs!). The eco-friendly touches are more than just a token recycling bin; single-use plastics are banned, free purified water is provided, and sustainability is clearly taken seriously. Throw in the friendly staff, free breakfast, and a crowd of both travellers and locals, and it’s the sort of place that feels creative, welcoming, and just a little bit different.

Why you’ll love this hostel:

• Full of Character: Street art, recycled furniture, and creative touches in every corner.
• Great Local Vibe: The on-site bistrot attracts locals as well as travellers.

The bunk beds can be a little squeaky, and the overall vibe is more chilled than wildly social. But with the metro just a short walk away, the Duomo di Milano only a few stops from your door, and the bars and restaurants of Porta Romana nearby, Madama gives you easy access to Milan’s best bits without the full city-centre price tag. If you like the idea of sleeping in a former police station turned art-filled eco-hostel, it’s a very easy place to like.
