That’s great once you’re there, but it can make deciding where to stay a bit of a headache. Pick the right base and you’ll spend more time exploring. Pick the wrong one and you could find yourself spending far more time in the car than you’d planned.

With spas, scenery and a bit of local folklore, there’s plenty to discover, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a great pick for families travelling through Germany.

Known as the Jewel of the Black Forest, Freiburg im Breisgau is my top area for first-time visitors. This charming city is like a microcosm of the entire region, offering easy access to some of the most popular attractions across the Black Forest’s stunning landscapes.
If you’re visiting during the festive season, Freiburg really comes into its own. Its Christmas market, set around the historic old town and cathedral, is one of the best Christmas markets to visit in Germany. Think glowing lights, traditional wooden stalls and plenty of mulled wine to keep you warm.
Freiburg sits close to the German, French and Swiss borders, making it a great base if you’re travelling through Germany. The main train station is just a short walk from the centre, so hopping between countries is easy. Strasbourg is around an hour away, and Basel is even closer, making both ideal for day trips.
Freiburg im Breisgau is also the most budget-friendly option in the region, with a wide range of accommodation and great transport links helping to keep overall costs down.

The Black Forest is a magical destination that must be seen to be believed. Its mesmerising forests and quaint villages will have you feeling like Hansel and Gretel in a classic German fairytale.
If I had to pick the area that really stands out to me, it would have to be Freiburg. Its central location benefits from great connections to the rest of Baden-Württemberg, as well as onward to Switzerland. If you want a touch of luxury, Colombi Hotel is the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring.
That being said, the best place for you really depends on what you want to get out of your stay. If you prefer a more lively base with plenty to do, you can’t go wrong with Baden-Baden. Huber’s Hotel is a great base in the town for your Black Forest adventures, whilst Bonndorf offers a calmer experience if you want to recharge your batteries.
