It’s got iconic waves – yes, some good enough for pros and others mellow enough for beginners – which gives it an unsurprisingly laid-back, bohemian vibe that makes every day feel slow and intentional.
What’s cool is how the different pockets of this place each tell a unique story. Some areas are buzzing with nightlife, others are all about yoga and hidden surf breaks. That’s why figuring out where to stay in Arugam Bay is so important. Where you base yourself is shaped by whether you’re up for sunrise surf missions, quiet lagoon days, or late nights under the stars.

Arugam Beach South
Arugam Beach South is the heart of the action and where I recommend first-time visitors base themselves. You’ll find a buzzing strip of surf schools, yoga studios, beach bars, smoothie bars, and accommodations ranging from mid-range guesthouses to luxury hotels and even surf camps around here.
Arugam Beach North
The north side, what I’ve called ‘Arugam Beach North’, is surfer central. It’s the area where early mornings start with a dawnie surf (aka, in the water at first light) before you’ve even had your morning coffee.
Arugam Bay Town
A short walk or scooter ride from the beachfront, Arugam Bay Town is what I consider to be the cultural centre of the area. If you’re wondering where to stay in Arugam Bay to save money, this is where you’ll find the most options for budget-friendly accommodations,

Pasarichenai Beach feels like another world compared to the buzz of Arugam Bay’s central beaches. Technically, it’s just on the other side of town, but it’s a lot quieter and feels more remote.
My Top 4 Neighbourhoods in Arugam Bay to Stay in
Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, here’s a deep dive into each Arugam Bay neighbourhood with some recommendations for places to stay and things to do in each area:
1. Arugam Beach South – Best Place to Stay for a First-Time Visit
Arugam Beach South is the heart of the action and where I recommend first-time visitors base themselves. You’ll find a buzzing strip of surf schools (one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka), yoga studios, beach bars, smoothie bars, and accommodations ranging from mid-range guesthouses to luxury hotels and even surf camps around here.
The vibe is social but easy-going, with locals running family guesthouses and expats teaching yoga or surf lessons (sometimes both). It’s also a very walkable area, so you won’t need a scooter to get around. Although that said, a scooter is highly recommended for exploring the wider region. People come here for the balance between lively and laid-back, and the ease of getting around. Plus, the sunrises are beyond magical.
- Best For: Being close to the action including surfing and yoga.
- The Vibe: Pretty social with a lot going on.
- Proximity to Airport: It takes 8-10 hours to reach Pottuvil from Colombo Airport by bus. Then you need to take a 10-minute $4 tuk tuk ride to the beach. There are a couple of closer airports (Ampara and Batticoloa) but few will use them.
- Transport Level: You can easily get around by tuk tuk here if needed. It should cost $3 max for a local ride.
- Budget: Cheap. You can find a ton of guesthouse near the beach here without breaking the bank.
- Crowds: Moderate. It’s not rammed here, but you’ll find your fair share of beach bums.

Perera Hotel & Restaurant | Best Budget Hotel
Most cheap places to stay here are shared dorm rooms, but Perera Hotel offers the privacy of your own room for broke backpacker-friendly prices. You can pay an additional $4 for breakfast, and with a selection of pancakes, fruits, and much more, it’s a great option to have. It’s a stone’s throw from the beach, so perfect when you’re ready to hit the waves. I love it!
Eastwind Surf Camp | Best Surf Camp
With a 24-hour front desk, an on-site restaurant, and a decent breakfast spread on offer, Eastwind is well-prepared for backpackers like ourselves to come in and enjoy what it has to offer. It’s run by a super friendly family, and I always felt at home here. They even told me about some places where you can see elephants nearby! The one thing I did find a little challenging was the lack of AC, but for such a great place in a cracking location, this is a belter.
Forcus Cabanas Deluxe 1 | Best Cabanas
Forcus Cabanas are one of the best places in Arugam Bay’s south beach area. The rooms are surrounded by palm trees and tropical foliage, giving the accommodation that barefoot-luxury feel. The interiors are simple and rustic, with just the essentials for an easy-going stay without complications. You’ll love lounging on the oversized daybed outside, which is also an epic spot for some remote work. A bit pricy, but with two people you can make it more reasonable.
2. Arugam Beach North – Best Place to Stay for Surfers
The north side, what I’ve called ‘Arugam Beach North’, is surfer central. It’s the area where early mornings start with a dawnie surf (aka, in the water at first light) before you’ve even had your morning coffee. The area is dotted with surf shacks, budget hostels, and a few simple cabanas, drawing a group of long-term surfer expats. There are surf breaks for advanced surfers and beginners around the area.
The vibe is highly influenced by the surf culture, which took over from the local fishing industry when tourists got wind of the perfect peeling waves. But it still feels authentically Sri Lankan, with a real sense of community and a fun social scene. It’s honestly one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka for vibes, surf and beauty combined.
- Best For: Beach bums will love it here, especially surfers.
- The Vibe: It’s pretty peaceful with a strong surf scene and a bit more of a local feel.
- Proximity to Airport: Again, it takes 8-10 hours to reach Pottuvil from Colombo Airport by bus. Then you need to take the 10-15 minute $4 tuk tuk ride to the beach here.
- Transport Level: Very easy to get around either by scooter or tuk tuk.
- Budget: Fairly affordable with many decent guesthouses around, and cheap local food.
- Crowds: More moderate with a few surfers hanging around.

Bay Dreams Beach Hotel & Surf Camp | Best Surf Camp
Bay Dreams Beach Hotel is a surf camp that feels like home away from home. The vibe is surf-oriented, with plenty of digital nomads spending their days between the ocean and the outdoor workspaces. Mornings start with an early surf, and days end with chats under the cabanas. The rooms themselves are basic, but with such cool people around, you’ll hardly be spending much time in them anyway.
Arne’s Place The Friendliest Hotel | Best Hostel
Arne’s Place has a reputation for friendliness, and I feel it is well deserved. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere at this hostel feels open and welcoming, with guests and staff alike treating you like part of a large family. The hostel is colourful and casual, perfect for surfers or backpackers who don’t need luxury, only a comfortable place to rest their heads and enjoy shared meals with new friends. I enjoyed my stay here, and can’t wait to come back!
Villa Wonne 1. Floor Family Apartment | Best Family Home
With two bedrooms and a large open concept living space, Villa Wonne is the perfect spot to base yourself if you’re looking for a bit of privacy and personal space. The apartment is large and bright, ideal for those who like to cook their own food and spread out after long surf days. The building itself is a three-decade-old home inspired by eco-friendly architecture – and it shows. Families of 3+ will save a ton by splitting costs, which makes it a reasonable budget option.
3. Arugam Bay Town – Best Area to Stay on a Budget
A short walk or scooter ride from the beachfront, Arugam Bay Town is what I consider to be the cultural centre of the area, and somewhere I always stay in Sri Lanka when I visit. If you’re wondering where to stay to save money, this is where you’ll find the most options for budget-friendly accommodations, from local guesthouses to backpackers and even some cottage rentals with self-catering facilities. This is where daily life happens: markets, shops, cafes and street food stalls all buzzing with a mix of locals and expats, day and night.
Travellers who stay here often want a bit more of a cultural immersion, and will benefit from cheaper prices at the same time. It’s a great place to try authentic Sri Lankan food and save cash while still being close to the surf and beaches. If you’re looking for stunning places in Sri Lanka to visit, then this is the spot.
- Best For: Being closer to amenities including shops and restaurants.
- The Vibe: Lively but social, it’s not a mad party destination but you can still make friends here.
- Proximity to Airport: Again, you’ll need to take the 8-10 hour bus from Colombo, then a tuk tuk ride over from Pottuvil.
- Transport Level: Easily walkable, but scooter rental and tuk tuk rides give you other options.
- Budget: Budget-friendly with a wide range of places to stay.
- Crowds: Higher than other parts of the bay, with surf season (May-October) leading to huge spikes in the number of people around, so depending on what you’re after, it might not be the best time to visit this area of Sri Lanka.

The Bavarian Resort | Best Guest House
Discard any vision you have of a classic resort, because The Bavarian Resort doesn’t fit the mould. Instead of luxurious rooms and a full board of amenities and services, this spot feels more like a local homestay than a resort at all. It’s located right in the heart of the main town, with simple yet spotless rooms and gardens that give off a ‘hidden courtyard’ feel. It’s cosy, laid-back, and run with genuine warmth. And as broke backpackers it also meets the criteria for what we’re looking for, it’s super affordable! Seriously, one of my tips for Sri Lanka is to check out guest houses and not just hostels.
Fins Arugambay | Best Hostel
Located close to the main beach and Pasarichenai Beach, Fins is the kind of hostel where the energy feels infectious. It’s got just the right mix between fun and social, and relaxing and chilled. There is always something going on, but also always the opportunity to retreat to your calming dorm or suite for a little bit of alone time. The bunks are clean and functional, but the real highlight has to be the community vibe that will leave you with a few new friends. I mean, it doesn’t get much better than this when it comes to hostels in Sri Lanka!
Gypcey Home | Best Cottage
For your own private space in the heart of Arugam Bay Town, Gypcey Home is the kind of place that will make you want to extend your trip. The cottage is minimalistic and charming with colourful touches that make it stand out from the rest. You’ll enjoy the indoor/outdoor living environment, where built-in modular seating gives plenty of space to relax and eat outdoors.
4. Pasarichenai Beach – Best Area for Nature Lovers
Pasarichenai Beach feels like another world compared to the buzz of Arugam Bay’s central beaches. Technically, it’s just on the other side of town, but it’s a lot quieter and feels more remote, so it’s perfect if you want to build some more chill time into your itinerary for Sri Lanka.
Accommodations here are usually self-catering rentals, but there are a few hostels and bed and breakfasts. This place is surrounded by nature, with the wide beachfront and wild ocean at its core. It’s a good option for those who prefer to spend their days watching birds or relaxing on an uncrowded beach. While there is an expat community here, this area feels pretty local, but also feels like an extension of Arugam Bay Town.
- Best For: Couples and nature lovers.
- The Vibe: Much quieter than the other areas I’ve covered.
- Proximity to Airport: Once more, you need to take the 8-10 hour bus from Colombo to Pottovil followed by a short tuk tuk ride.
- Transport Level: It’s a bit more remote and trickier to get around here. I suggest renting a scooter, although tuk tuks are an option if you’re patient.
- Budget: Mid-range, it’s a bit harder to find cheap pads since there isn’t much of a selection out here.
- Crowds: Low. Blissful and peaceful without hordes of locals or tourists around. It’s so serene!
Things to See and Do in Pasarichenai Beach
- Relax on the unspoiled sand at Kudakalliya Beach
- Go rock climbing around Crocodile Rock, a natural rock climbing area
- Rent a scooter and explore the surrounding rice paddies
- Join a sunrise or sunset tour to Elephant Rock
- Learn to surf with a professional guide at Peanut Farm Beach
- Check out the remote Sastrawela Pagoda Temples
- Spend an evening stargazing from the quiet beach
Early Birds | Best Hostel
Just set back a couple of blocks from the beach, this hostel is one of the best in the area. Rooms have air con, which is something that makes this place stand out compared to others I stayed in around here. There’s also a buffet breakfast included in the price, and you can’t go wrong with that.
There’s curtains on the bed, so it almost feels like a private room here, and we even played games with the hosts in the evening, a lovely and welcoming bunch!
Saltwater Surf Camp | Best Surf Camp
If you want to spend your days learning to surf and evenings surrounded by like-minded travellers, Saltwater Surf Camp is the kind of place where the days merge. The hostel has a raw, rustic vibe, which is exactly what makes it so special. It’s all about surfing, sunsets and community. It’s not polished or fancy, but it is incredibly designed using local wood and building techniques – the kind that will make it hard to forget that you’re in the tropics.
The Sandpit Arugam Bay | Best House
The Sandpit might be my favourite place to stay in Arugam Bay. It’s a self-catering house, with minimalistic modular interiors and a lot of whitewashed walls, glass windows, and high wooden ceilings. The whole vibe is casual chic, with the sandy beach starting just inches from the entrance. The two-bedroom house has a shaded alfresco dining area and a gorgeous outdoor lounge area that makes it hard to justify eating out.
You’ll need a group of 4 to make the price viable, but once you have some friends, this place is unreal and worth every penny.

Still Unsure on Where to Stay in Arugam Bay? My Suggestions
Arugam Bay is a small fishing village turned surfer hotspot with a lot more to offer than just good waves. Dividing the town into four distinct areas, choosing where to settle really depends on what you’re after. South Beach is lively and central, perfect for first-time visitors, while North Beach appeals mainly to surfers looking for the perfect barrel.
If you’re on a tight budget, Arugam Bay Town is probably the cheapest area, with homestays and guesthouses on the cards. But for a bit more peace and tranquillity, you’ll want to head off the beaten track to Pasarichenai Beach, an area just south of Arugam Bay that has rustic accommodations set on a wide sandy beach.
If I had to pick just one favourite place to stay, it would have to be Fins Arugambay. It’s a chilled place, yet I thought it was pretty easy to meet people here. I’d describe it as a social hostel rather than a party one. It’s awesome for spending time, making friends, and it’s pretty clean which makes a change from many beach hostels I’ve been to.
