Now, some travellers might skip Skardu in favor of sticking to the Karakoram Highway when travelling in Pakistan, but trust me when I say it’s worth the detour. With a little preparation and an open mind, you will find it to be one of the most rewarding destinations you could ever visit. Fact!

It’s significantly different (and better!) than typical Pakistani food and you really won’t see anything like this outside of Gilgit Baltistan.

One of the most unique stays in Skardu is overnighting in the heritage Shigar Fort Residence. Built over 400 years ago and lovingly restored, this former royal palace blends ancient architecture with modern comforts. Its carved wooden balconies, stone courtyards, and museum-like interiors let you step back in time while still enjoying warm hospitality and breathtaking mountain views. Magical, right?

A walk through Skardu Bazaar is an adventure in itself and, honestly, one of the best activities in Skardu for foodies and market lovers alike. Think lively streets brimming with colours, aromas of fresh cuisine, and the hum of local life. Stalls overflow with handwoven shawls, carved wooden trinkets, dried fruits, and fragrant spices, giving you a real glimpse into the culture and traditions of the region.

You absolutely have to try some of the freshly baked breads, apricot-based treats, and haggle for unique handmade crafts. It’s all part of the experience! I always prefer to visit in the evening when the market comes alive. It also offers endless chances to shop, snack, and soak in the atmosphere. That’s why you’re here, right?

16. Spectate at a Traditional Polo Match

Watching a traditional polo match in Skardu is a properly rad experience that overflows with energy, culture, and excitement. Played at some of the highest polo grounds in the world, the sport here is raw and fast-paced, with no set rules other than skill, courage, and teamwork.

Remove your ideas of Western polo matches with hoity-toity wealthy folk, Champagne, and caviar blinis. This is raw and radical! The sound of hooves, the cheers of the crowd, and the backdrop of towering peaks make it unforgettable.

And it’s much more than just a game. It’s a centuries-old tradition that unites communities. I would definitely try to watch a local festival match because it also includes music, food, and vibrant celebrations to the already festive day out.

17. Relax and Unwind at Shangrila Resort at Lower Kachura Lake

What better way to end off the best things to do in Skardu than with a proper relaxing finish – Shangrila Resort. Located at Lower Kachura Lake, it’s nestled among lush gardens and crystal clear waters and offers stunning views of the lake reflecting the surrounding mountains. Here are some of the most common ways of getting around Skardu and the surrounding valleys:

Shared Vans and Local Transport

For budget travellers, Suzuki vans and shared Jeeps run on set routes between Skardu town and nearby villages. Prices are super cheap, often less than $2 USD. But keep in mind that rides can be crowded and bumpy. But hey, it’s part of the adventure!

Jeeps and 4×4 Rentals

For off-road adventures and trips into valleys like Shigar, Khaplu, or Deosai National Park, a jeep or 4×4 is the way to go. A full-day rental with a driver will set you back around $20 – $35, but it is totally worth it for the comfort and access to otherwise tough routes.

Motorbike Rentals

If you’re a more adventurous traveller, you can travel by motorbike to explore at your own pace. Daily rental rates are around $8 – $13 USD, so it’s ridiculously affordable. Just bear in mind that roads can be rough, so this option is best for confident riders only.

Taxis and Private Cars

In Skardu town itself, small taxis are the most common way to move around. A short ride within the city will usually cost about $1 – $2. Longer trips to nearby spots like Shangrila Lake or Satpara Lake are likely to set you back around $10-$20, depending on distance (and your negotiation skills, of course).

Domestic Flights

Skardu can be accessed from Islamabad by direct flights with PIA or AirBlue, usually lasting about an hour. Ticket prices range from about $70 -$100 one way, depending on the season and availability. Flights are also weather-dependent, so delays and cancellations are common.

Walking and Hiking

Finally, one of the best ways to get around Skardu is simply on foot. Whether it is a stroll through the bazaar or a trek to a viewpoint, walking connects you more deeply to the stunning landscape.
