Looking for a solid stay in Santa Marta? Then Mr Baboon Hostel has got just the place for you.
In an epic location, close to the beach, but still in town the hostel has a pool, awesome rooftop zone as well as some very nice common areas.
Before you know it you’ll be chilling out here for all too long.

Cacao is like, the perfect place to get to know people. In fact, it actually feels like a little mini-community all of its own: that’s the vibe at this recommended hostel in Santa Marta. The staff are really nice – no, really, like REALLY nice. They seem to actually like their jobs – if not love them! And that helps make this the best hostel for solo travellers in Santa Marta.
There’s nothing quite like feeling welcomed somewhere, right? On top of this it’s clean, the pool is pretty sick, the kitchen is very good, but the AC is a bit weak. Price is super good also.
La Guaca Hostel – Best Cheap Hostel in Santa Marta #1
This is the best cheap hostel in Santa Marta because although it’s cheap it certainly CERTAINLY does not look it. Not one bit. It actually looks quite boutique-y and that is something we like. A bit of casual luxury. Yeah. Well, it’s not exactly in the centre of town – but you don’t need to be there 100% of the time, do ya? However, it means there’s a different vibe in the area. Supermarkets and that, which are fun to explore when you’re backpacking. It also has a V chic pool, you get a free Colombian breakfast every morning, and the rooms are clean.
El Rio Hostel – Best Cheap Hostel in Santa Marta #2
Another Santa Marta backpackers hostel that’s located pretty far out of town (this time not in a jungle) is El Rio Hostel. The name suggests rivers and, well, there is one here – and a beach, and a bit of jungle, too. It’s really cool. And even though it’s removed from the city itself, the nightlife is pretty cool here. For people who really like being outdoors, they have an 18-hammock ‘dorm’ – each with mosquito nets – set in the shelter of an avocado tree. Pffft, what else? Well it’s actually really easy to get to, the food and drink on offer is cheap AND good (actually – incredible), and the team working here is truly an awesome bunch.
The Journey Hostel – Best Cheap Hostel in Santa Marta #3
For something a little bit different – and something that’s definitely, definitely mainly for nature-lovers (city people and scaredy-cats might not like it so much) – here’s a recommended hostel in Santa Marta that’s pretty much in the jungle. Yep, that’s right: the jungle. It’s ok though – the food’s good and the owners are a friendly brother-and-sister team who can recommend/book stuff to do in the area; for instance, there’s a hike where you’re pretty much guaranteed to see monkeys straight out the door. Pretty close to Tayrona, too. But yes: it’s a bit far from Santa Marta so don’t expect to be clubbing at night!
Hostel Masaya Santa Marta – Best Hostel for Digital Nomads in Santa Marta
Although it isn’t what we’d call a BUDGET hostel in Santa Marta, Masaya is a really, REALLY cool place. It might just be the coolest hostel in Santa Marta for the number of spaces it has to chill and lose yourself. Snug little corners and hidden balconies – it’s sick, in a word. So with all of these hidey-holes, it’s the best hostel for digital nomads in Santa Marta; there are plenty of places to work with your laptop here. Along with all the space, it’s the authenticity of the place that’s conducive to a pretty magical working environment, we gotta say. Combine with a rooftop bar, swimming pools, etc. and you’ll be treatin’ yo’self that’s for sure. It is also pretty well-situated to all of the fun things to do in Santa Marta.
Eco Hostal Yuluka – Best Hostel for Couples in Santa Marta
If you’re after something a little bit different to spark the romance, check this place out. Eco Hostal Yuluka offers private cabanas that are built into the mountainside. The cabanas have beautiful views of the jungle and open up into tropical gardens. If you’re not feeling the love already… there is an included breakfast, an on-site spa, a swimming pool and more. There is a fully equipped kitchen if you want to whip up your own meals, but there is also a restaurant on-site if you want to enjoy a date night for two!
Viajero Tayrona Hostel & Ecohabs – Best Party Hostel in Santa Marta
If you’re looking for a hostel to drink a few too many cocktails, mix and mingle with fellow travellers PLUS enjoy the beach? Viajero in Tayrona is the spot for you. The hostel puts on DAILY free activities – including volleyball, yoga, dance classes, movie nights, bonfires, karaoke nights AND their famous giant Jenga.
The hostel is in Buritaca, so it’s a bit further away but you can rent motorbikes for a decent price and explore from the hostel. You’ll be 20 minutes from Palomino or the Tayrona park entrance.

Encanto Hostel – Best Hostel with a Private Room in Santa Marta
So, you’re a bit over the dorm life, eh? I feel ya, it can get tiring sometimes. If you’re looking to keep the hostel vibes but grab yourself a private room where you can really relax – the rooms are Encanto Hostel are perfect.
The hostel oozes with tranquillity as it is nestled right into nature in the beautiful area of Mendihuaca, just 45 minutes away from Santa Marta. Their private rooms have gorgeous balconies overlooking the river and super comfortable bedding. They also have a daily cleaning service which is a nice bonus.

This is the only top hostel in Santa Marta that is literally beachfront, so if you like the beach PAY ATTENTION. It’s pretty far out of town, but for the beach, you can make a sacrifice, right? It’s also not for lazy people who can’t walk the half-kilometre to the bus stop (c’mon, you can manage that!). Staff are nice and can call you a taxi though But then you’ll probs be an active person – so rejoice for there are kayaks and paddle boards for you to use here! The beach is chill, rooms are clean, the atmosphere is calm ‘n’ friendly, the onsite restaurant is very tasty, and the WiFi is GREAT.
