As far as tropical islands go, Ometepe might be one of the most unique.

Why, you ask?

Well, while most islands can be found in an ocean, this island sits in the middle of crystal-clear Lake Nicaragua. Close your eyes and picture two volcanic peaks rising from the waters, with lush jungles teeming with wildlife and birds. Got it? Good. Because it is as out of this world as it sounds.

When it comes to figuring out where to stay in Ometepe, there are a range of areas that offer a unique experience for every traveler. If you’re after a tranquil lakeside beach retreat, Merida is the place for you. However, for more of a vibrant community buzz, Moyogalpa might be more up your alley.

Whether hiking to ancient pre-Colombian petroglyphs, kayaking in the shadow of a volcano, or relaxing on the black sand beaches, Ometepe promises an unforgettable experience in Nicaragua.

Where is the Best Place to Stay in Ometepe?

There are some incredible places to stay on the island, but these three accommodations in Ometepe are my ultimate recommendations. Whether you’re looking for an off-grid experience or a party hostel, these spots have it all:

Cabañas Privadas Dilany | Best Bungalows in Ometepe

cabanas privadas dilany ometepe

If you’re the type of traveler who likes to wake up surrounded by nature without sacrificing comfort and location, Cabanas Privadas Dilany offers the perfect balance. These hand-built wooden cabanas sit in a peaceful garden setting, just around the corner from the hub of Moyogalpa.

The ambiance is peaceful and homey, with hammocks swaying on private porches and hosts who will make you feel like family.

Raindance Hostel | Best Hostel in Ometepe

raindance hostel ometepe

Some hostels are just a cheap place to rest your head at night. This is not one of them. Raindance Hostel is an experience in itself. It’s an eco-conscious hostel with a goal for its guests to have the most fun possible.

With communal areas including multiple bars and a huge pool and deck, this is Ometepe’s main party hostel. Guests from all over the island come here to experience the weekly pool parties and continuous good vibes.

2-Bed Treehouse with Volcano Views | Best Airbnb in Ometepe

Selvista Jungle House Ometepe

Imagine falling asleep to the sound of jungle birds and monkeys and waking up to stunning views of a volcano. Suspended among the treetops, this eco-friendly hideaway offers a magical stay for adventurous travelers who still enjoy a little comfort and luxury.

The cabins are open-air, which brings you close to nature while still offering comfortable beds, mosquito nets, and an unforgettable sunrise experience. Visit here if you’re up for a digital detox or a romantic place to stay in Ometepe.

Ometepe Neighborhood Guide – Best Places to Stay in Ometepe

FIRST TIME IN OMETEPE

FIRST TIME IN OMETEPE

Moyogalpa

Moyogalpa is Ometepe’s main town and the first place you’ll see when you arrive on a ferry from the mainland. It’s the most developed area and, as a result, not necessarily the most attractive.

ON A BUDGET

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is one of the most well-known neighborhoods in Ometepe, mainly because it is the backpacking and adventure hub of the island. It sits between the two volcanoes, perfectly positioned for those who want easy access to all the best hiking trails.

FOR NATURE LOVERS

FOR NATURE LOVERS

Balgue

I know what you might think: Isn’t this entire island for nature lovers? Well, yes, but Balgue is at the heart of Ometepe’s natural beauty. It’s a small, lush village nestled on the slopes of the Maderas Volcano, mostly attracting eco-conscious travelers who thrive in an off-the-grid space.

MOST REMOTE AREA

MOST REMOTE AREA

Merida

So, for an island so remote, where should you stay in Ometepe for the most off-the-grid experience? Merida is the ideal hideaway for travelers looking to totally disconnect from reality, social media, and the modern world and embrace the wild side of Nicaragua.

Nicaragua has quite a name for itself. It’s about as close to Jurassic Park as things get, considering its nickname as the land of lakes and volcanoes. With some of the best volcanoes in Central America, they certainly are the main stars of the show in Ometepe. Formed by two towering volcanoes called Concepcion and Maderas rising from the misty lake, this island feels like a step back into prehistory.

And when it comes to finding accommodation, where you stay can really shape your experience. Some spots are totally off-the-grid and wild, and others offer a diverse cultural experience.

Moyogalpa is the gateway to Ometepe and my personal recommendation for first-time visitors. It’s the main port town where most ferries from mainland Nicaragua arrive. It’s accessible, with a good mix of hostels, restaurants, and places to rent a handy scooter. Because let’s be real, you’ll want a scooter to get around here.

Santa Cruz is the budget-friendly backpacker’s hub and the heart of the island’s adventure scene. It’s often that these two go hand in hand. It’s located along the lake shore between the two volcanoes, packed with affordable hostels and laid-back cafes. It’s social, fun, and filled with other people backpacking Nicaragua.

Balgue is my personal favorite place to stay in Ometepe to unwind in nature. It’s tucked away into the lower slopes of Volcan Maderas and is famous for its eco-lodges and permaculture farms. It’s got a more boho vibe than the rest of the island and is a must if you’re into yoga, healthy organic food, and nature.

For an off-the-grid escape, Merida is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. It’s a remote village on the far side of the island where you can go to disconnect – literally – because the cell service can be so spotty.

Ometepe’s Four Best Neighborhoods to Stay in

Spread across the island against volcanic backdrops, these four neighborhoods are some of the best to stay in when you visit Ometepe.

1. Moyogalpa – Where to Stay in Ometepe for Your First Time

Moyogalpa is Ometepe’s main town and the first place you’ll see when you arrive on a ferry from the mainland. It’s the most developed area and, as a result, not necessarily the most attractive. But with a mix of locals, expats, and backpackers passing through, one thing is certain – it’s a huge vibe.

If you like having everything within reach, like ATMs, restaurants, grocery stores, and a solid selection of budget to mid-range accommodations, this is the place for you.

And while it may lack the remote island feel of other areas, it’s an incredible place to gather your bearings on a first-time visit.

Cabañas Privadas Dilany | Best Rustic Cabins in Moyogalpa

cabanas privadas dilany ometepe

You know the type of place you dream of when you think of ‘rustic, tropical vacation’? Well, this is one of them. Nestled in the lush greenery around the Ometepe neighborhood of Moyogalpa, the Cabanas Privadas Dilany are a series of wooden cabins, each with a private patio.

The accommodation also has an on-site restaurant serving delicious local cuisine, and the staff’s warmth and hospitality enhance the overall experience of the stay.

Rustic House Hostel | Best Hostel in Moyogalpa

rustic house hostel ometepe

Rustic House Hostel really lives up to its name. It offers a laid-back environment that attracts budget-friendly backpackers from all walks of life. The dorms and private rooms are clean and comfortable, but seriously basic and rustic. Don’t expect too much.

Spend your evenings chilling in the common area, gathering with other solo travelers in Central America to share travel experiences and tips. The hostel also organizes motorbike tours, horseback rides, and volcano tours around the island.

Ometepe House | Best Hotel in Moyogalpa

ometepe house

Ometepe House is a hidden gem that combines comfort with affordability. The rooms are spacious and filled with local art for a cultural touch. Here, your mornings start with a hearty homemade breakfast of fresh fruit and continental dishes.

2. Santa Cruz – Best Place to Stay in Ometepe on a Budget

Santa Cruz is one of the most well-known neighborhoods in Ometepe, mainly because it’s the backpacking and adventure hub of the island. It sits between the two volcanoes, perfectly positioned for those who want easy access to all the best hiking trails. It’s close to the Ojo de Aqua, a must-do on your Ometepe itinerary, a natural spring-fed pool perfect for cooling off after a day of hiking.

natural spring ojo de agua

The town is small and has a mix of budget-friendly hostels and rustic guesthouses. If you’re backpacking Central America on a budget, Santa Cruz will be right up your alley. It’s an affordable place to stay, home to a community of eco-conscious expats and friendly locals.

Beach Cabin Ometepe | Best Budget Hotel in Santa Cruz

beach cabin ometepe

Tucked away in a quiet section of town along the shores of Santa Cruz, Beach Cabin Ometepe feels like a tranquil retreat on the water’s edge. The cabins, which are simple yet equipped with all the necessities, are surrounded by lush greenery and birdsong.

Waking up to the gentle sound of the lake and birds is one of the best ways to start a day in Ometepe. After which, you can enjoy the la carte and vegetarian breakfast offerings at the restaurant.

Raindance Hostel | Best Hostel in Santa Cruz

raindance hostel ometepe

If you’re wondering where to stay in Ometepe for a nighttime rave, Raindance Hostel is considered Ometepe’s party hostel. No matter when you visit or who you visit with, you’re bound to experience a night out without even leaving the property. It’s the only hostel in the area with a pool and has the liveliest bar and restaurant on the island.

The coolest thing is that you can order drinks from a treetop bar using a pulley lift system. If that wasn’t cool enough, the cherry on top is their themed parties and weekly pool parties that they host.

Viento and Volcanes Guesthouse | Best Guesthouse in Santa Cruz

viento and volcanes guesthouse ometepe

If you’re craving a little slice of your own space, consider Viento and Volcanoes Guesthouse your home away from home. Even though it’s called a ‘guesthouse,’ this is a totally self-catering apartment made exceptional by its location in the treetops and views over the lake.

From your comfortable suite, you can gaze out across the trees and over onto the beach, which is just a one-minute walk from the lake.

3. Balgue – Best Area in Ometepe For Nature Lovers

You’ll find some great eco-lodges, yoga retreats, and permaculture farms, each offering a unique nature-immersed experience.

Balgue is also the ideal place to stay in Ometepe if you plan on hiking Maderas and exploring the island’s wilder east side. It’s laid-back, charming, and has a major focus on sustainability.

2-Bed Treehouse with Volcano Views | Best Airbnb in Balgue

Selvista Jungle House Ometepe

If you’ve ever wanted to spend a night in a treehouse, this is your chance. It’s a three-story, two-bedroom home above the trees that offers unparalleled views. Waking up to the gentle rustling of the leaves and the call of tropical birds is magical.

Part of the Selvista Guesthouses, this eco-accommodation is surrounded by the jungle and an organic permaculture farm.

The best thing is that the treehouse is just a five-minute stroll to the lake, perfectly located for morning dips and sunset views.

La Urraca Loca | Best Hostel in Balgue

la urraca loca ometepe

If there is a hostel that captures the essence of the Ometepe backpacker community, it would be this one. The hostel’s lively atmosphere is complemented by its rustic charm, featuring communal spaces like covered terraces with hammocks and co-working spaces (although be warned that the Wi-Fi isn’t excellent in this area).

It feels totally hidden from reality, surrounded by an overgrown jungle. But in reality, it’s well located as a base to explore the island.

The Hummingbird House | Traditional Finca in Balgue

finca ometepe the hummingbird house

Wondering where to stay in Ometepe for the most authentic experience? Located in a remote part of the island near Balgue, Hummingbird House is an authentic Nicaraguan Finca on a permaculture farm. The traditional architecture, featuring wooden beams and clay tiles, shows off the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The Finca is surrounded by gorgeous gardens, with year-round blossoms and fresh herbs wafting through the area. Accompany this with sweeping views of the mist-covered volcanoes, and it almost feels as if this is the only building on the island.

4. Merida – Most Remote Area in Ometepe

So, for an island so remote, where should you stay in Ometepe for the most off-the-grid experience? Merida is the ideal hideaway for travelers looking to totally disconnect from reality, social media, and the modern world and embrace the wild side of Nicaragua. It’s located on the southeastern shore of the island, and while not so far from Moyogalpa, it feels worlds away from the busier center.

With few visitors, minimal infrastructure, and limited Wi-Fi and cell service, visit this spot if you don’t want to be concerned with checking your phone every few minutes.

Accommodations range from basic guesthouses to rustic eco-lodges and traditional Fincas. Mostly run by locals, many of these spots are ideally located along the lakefront to access hikes, kayaking, and waterfalls.

La Sirenita | Rustic Beachfront Cabanas in Merida

la sirenita ometepe

When you hear someone talking about a ‘barefoot luxury,’ La Sirenita comes to mind. It’s not the type of luxurious accommodation you might be used to, but rather a series of rustic thatched huts located along the shores of the lake.

The cabanas blend in with the jungle trees, allowing guests to feel a part of the beautiful natural landscape.

Around here, the best part of the day is sunset, as the sun dramatically illuminates the calm lake. To disconnect with the modern world, this place is pure bliss.

Villa Ometepe | Best Villa in Merida

villa ometepe

You wouldn’t expect to find a fully modern villa in one of the island’s most remote regions. But Villa Ometepe is here to prove that wrong. It has three bedrooms and space for eight guests to sleep comfortably.

The highlights of this property are the rooftop terrace and pool, which offer stunning views over the lake. After a day exploring the island and its beaches, unwind in the pool with a cold drink as you watch the sun dip below the lake.

Lakefront Modern Home | Best Rental in Merida

lakefront modern home ometepe

Compared with other accommodations on the island, this modern casita is totally unique. It’s modern, minimalistic, and somehow rustic all at the same time. With one bedroom and a small kitchenette, it’s the perfect base for those who enjoy preparing their own food.

The best place to enjoy a home-cooked meal? The terrace, of course! Fitted with a large family-style dining table overlooking the lake, you can consider this place to stay in Ometepe, your tiny home away from home in Ometepe.
