Baja has a special place in my heart. It’s one of those destinations that I can’t help going back to again and again whenever I visit Mexico. A big reason for that is that the landscape is so varied.

On a multi-day off-road tour, you go from whizzing through the desert one moment to peering out at jaw-dropping sea views the next.

There are loads of cruises and organised tours in Baja, but an off-road tour is the way to go! Whether you’re a thrill seeker or someone who likes to live on the wild side and experience life off the beaten path, you’ll be hooked.

Whether you’re down for a one-week adventure or you’ve only got time for a half-day tour, I’ve found loads of awesome options. From motorbikes, UTVs, and 4×4 tours, it’s a veritable smorgasbord of off-roading adventure. Let’s get into it.

1. Guided Overlanding Tour – Best Adventure Tour Overall

• Days: Choose between a two-night and a seven-night schedule
• Price: $375 per person, per night
• Group Size: You can go off solo with your partner once you’ve got the car
• Fitness Required: Average
• Accommodations: You’ll sleep in the pop-up tent on top of the vehicle
• Meals Included: A chef will follow you on your tour and cook your meals
• Service Level: Basic

If you’d rather work to your own schedule and have the freedom to do things your way, then this is the tour for you. Pick up for 4×4 and head out into the wilderness with a chef and a knowledgeable guide who will support you along the way.

Because you don’t have to join a group, I also think it’s the perfect choice for couples travelling. Spending time alone together, reconnecting in nature with a personal chef – sounds hot to me!

All the best spots along the way are mapped out for you, too, all the treats without doing any of the work, that’s how to holiday. From lagoons to desert mountains, you’ll get to explore the best of Baja in your own time. No rush, no fixed schedules, just adventure. 

Who is this tour best for?

Free-spirited couples who are always up for an adventure. Or alternatively, families with older kids who could drive a separate truck, adrenaline junkies, and anyone who loves wild camping. 

Cons:

• The tour isn’t great for travelling families with young kids.
• If you want to go whale watching at the San Ignacio Lagoon, you’ll have to pay extra.

2. Bronco Expedition Baja Mitad – Best For Anyone From the USA

• Days: five days and four nights
• Price: $3,350 per vehicle, including a single passenger
• Group Size: The group size varies from tour to tour, but you can expect to be travelling with up to 10 other cars
• Fitness Required: Average. You don’t need to be super fit, but you’ll need to be a confident driver. 
• Accommodations: You’ll stop at a hotel each night of the trip.
• Meals Included: Dinners and breakfasts are included. For lunches, you’ll be on the road, and there will be places where you can stop and fill up.
• Service Level: Standard

This five-day adventure in a 4×4 off-road vehicle takes you through the dusty Baja desert and along the sandy shores of tropical beaches. Your epic journey halfway down the Baja Peninsula kicks off in the USA, so it’s a great thing to do if you’re already in America.

You’ll visit Ensenada, a cute coastal town, then travel down to San Quintin. The trip gets extra impressive from there. You’ll take on the windy and treacherous dirt roads that crisscross through the desert to the town of Catavina.

It’s pretty remote, and the desert mountains in the distance add a mystical feel to the place. To finish the trip off, you’ll drive down to Gonzaga Bay, where you can spend the evening cooling off over some well-deserved beers!  

Who is this tour best for?

If you’re a confident driver and you want to push your skills to the limit, this is a great fit. It’s also suited to anyone who likes to do things unconventionally, and free-spirited souls who don’t mind being taken on an adventure. 

Cons:

• This tour probably isn’t great if you’re travelling with young kids.
• If you’re not an experienced driver, this could be beyond your skill level.

3. 3 Day Adventure with Wide Open – Best Off-Road Tour for Younger Travellers

• Days: three days and two nights
• Price: $7,440 
• Group Size: Group sizes don’t tend to get bigger than 10 people
• Fitness Required: Average. As long as you can handle the adrenaline, you’ll be fine!
• Accommodations: You’ll stay at hotels along the way
• Meals Included: Two breakfasts, two lunches, and two dinners are included
• Service Level: Standard

Get ready for an unforgettable journey on a speedy UTV road trip through Baja, travelling from Cabo to La Paz and back again. The greatest thing about this trip was getting to see the best of Baja’s coastline, and still spending loads of time in the desert.

Take on mountain trails through lush forest, over to the famous surfing town of Todos Santos. From there, venture through expansive stretches of desert where you’ll swerve your way through spiky cacti. There are even some thrilling jumps and tight corners that will get your heart pumping! 

Who is this tour best for?

If you like living life on the edge and pushing boundaries, this is the tour for you. It’s also great if you can’t get loads of time off work. Alsooooo, the magical Mobular Ray Migration PUMPS off the coast of Cabo San Lucas and La Paz.

Cons:

• This tour is definitely on the pricier side.
• Because it’s a shorter trip, you won’t get to see as much of the Baja landscape as you would on a week-long expedition. 

4. Lost Pirate UTV Expedition – Best Tour for People Who Already Have a UTV

• Days: Four days and three nights
• Price: $2,900 per customer-owned UTV
• Group Size: 
• Fitness Required: Average
• Accommodations: You’ll stay at hotels along the way
• Meals Included: Breakfast and dinners are included, but lunches aren’t 
• Service Level: Standard

If you’re coming to Baja from the US and you already have your own decked-out UTV, then why don’t you join this tour? You’ll start in California and travel through the Sierra Juarez Mountains, then down through Baja. Cruise along the Pacific Coast and stop off at spots like Ensenada, famous for whale watching, before returning to the desert. 

There are loads of different race tracks along the way, and you’ll get to try out different trails. From forest trails with tight bends to sandy beach tracks with ocean vistas. They say variety is the spice of life, and this tour has it all.

Who is this tour best for?

This tour is great for groups of friends who want to go on an unforgettable adventure together. Also a great choice for adrenaline-seeking couples, and outgoing solo travellers ready for the next big thing. 

Cons:

• You need to have your own UTV.
• It’s recommended you bring any spare parts you might need in the case of a breakdown. Although the repair team will be able to help you fix anything that breaks. 

I get it, committing to a multi-day can feel like a lot, and it’s not exactly cheap either. If you’d like to dip your toes in the water before you commit to a bigger trip, then these day tours are the place to start. 

They’re also a great option if you’re already in Baja and you’re just trying to fill your schedule. Add a little adventure to your trip without breaking the bank! Los Cabos is one of my favourite beaches in Baja, so I’ve found tours that take off from there to get you inspired.

1. Cabo Migrino Beach and Desert ATV Tour plus Tequila Tasting

Ride a speedy ATV along the sand and soak in the sea views as the wind rushes through your hair. You’re in Los Cabos, baby! The tour will also take you through Cabo’s Migrino Desert, where cacti reign over the landscape and dunes stretch in every direction. 

It’s no secret that Mexico makes the world’s best tequila, so what better way to finish off an adventure-packed day with your new friends?

2. ATV Tour, Camel Ride, and Tequila Tasting

Why not mix it up and throw a camel ride into the mix? I’ve always been prone to FOMO, so being able to do it ALL put this tour at the top of my list. Watch your mates swallow your dust as you race through the desert, then hop on a camel’s back and meander along the beach. 

Another thing that’s great about this tour is that it comes with a hearty Mexican buffet lunch included. Finish the day off in true Mexican fashion with a tequila tasting, then crash out after a full day of adrenaline.

3. ATV Adventure and Eco Farm Tour

Race through Cabo’s hidden landscapes and get off the beaten track on this fun ATV adventure. You’ll get to travel through the desert, along the surrounding white sand beaches, and down windy dirt roads.

The routes really put my driving skills to the test, which was exactly what I’d hoped for! To jazz it up a bit, there’s also a visit to an eco farm at the end. It was great having a bit of culture thrown into the mix.

4. Beach and Desert ATV Tour

Get mucky speeding through puddy puddles and kicking up dust as you travel through the desert on this all-terrain ATV tour. Then soak in the ocean vistas from some of Cabo’s most picturesque beaches.

The guides were super professional but also very chill, which made me feel at ease. I had such a laugh on this tour, and the tequila tasting at the end was the cherry on top!

Best Time to Visit Baja

Most people come to Baja for the wildlife, which can be massively restricted when you can visit. Lucky for you, you’ll be spending most of your time driving through the desert, so this isn’t such a big deal. Of course, if you want to increase your chances of seeing a humpback whale as you cruise along the Pacific Coast, then that’s a different story.

The only season I’d suggest you try to avoid in Baja is summer because it gets suffocatingly hot. This makes it significantly harder to enjoy being out in nature – it’s pretty scorching from June through to September. But this does mean that if you live somewhere that’s cold and snowy in the winter, then you can escape to sunny Baja for a break!

If you’re like me and you’re not up for battling the heat, then autumn, winter, and early spring are great. If you ask me, dodge summer, these cooler months are the best times to come to Baja for an off-road adventure.

In my humble opinion, December is the best time to come. It’s also when the humpbacks and grey whales migrate through Baja, so you might catch a glimpse of them from the shore. On top of that, the temperatures are sunny and warm.

The great thing about Baja is that, because it’s always warm and sunny, you don’t have to pack any heavy layers. Travelling light always makes life easier, so I’m a big fan of packing the bare minimum. 

You will need to be extra ready for the sun, though, it’s pretty relentless. You don’t want to ruin your off-road adventure with a nasty sunburn! 

From the essentials to sun protection, here’s a handy list of everything you should add to your backpack:

• Lightweight hiking trousers. Ideally, get ones that unzip into shorts too, so you can use them any time of the day.
• Swimwear. All the off-roading tours in Baja hit a beach at some point. To save extra space, see if you can find swim trunks that double up as hiking shorts, too.
• SPF 50 sun cream. Remember – Baja is always sunny!  
• Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the blaring sun when you’re driving through the desert.
• If you’re bringing your own UTV, think about bringing along any spare parts you might need if you break down.
• Your best camera to capture memorable pics of your trip.
• A lightweight, quick-drying travel towel for the beach.
• Some thin pyjamas that won’t make you sweat at night.
• Hiking sandals, like a pair of Tevas or Keens that are sturdy for driving but great in the heat.
• Got some snorkelling kit at home? Bring it along just in case! 
• Bring a reusable water bottle. Baja is hot and arid, so you’ll want to make sure you’ve always got enough water with you. 

The time I spent off-roading in Baja always stands out amongst my many travel memories. There’s something timeless about driving through the desert in a shaky ATV and camping on the top of a kitted-out 4×4.
