Budapest was my first European city break away and, I have to say, a high bar was set. It has everything I’m looking for in a European getaway—architecture, culture and a bit of grit. From cool ruins bars to and insane underground music scene, the people in Budapest are fucking cool.

Culturally, Budapest has a bit of everything—grand cafes, history, edgy street art, and let’s not forget those thermal baths.

But my favourite part about Budapest? It is as cheap as you liiiiiilke. Its post-Soviet history makes it way more alike to other affordable Eastern European countries compared to those in the West. Your precious forint gets you far here—you’ll be living it on rooftop cocktail bars for a FRACTION of what it would cost you in London or Barcelona.

And because of that, it is an absolute backpacker haven. The hostels here are scattered far and wide and the quality is pretty damn good. So many options actually means it’s pretty difficult to find one that best suits you. Do you want to be where all the backpackers are? The party hub? Or would you prefer a quieter little spot that’s less in the know.

My guide to the best hostels in Budapest will answer all of that and more, friends. Let’s dive in so we can get you to the cheap pints ASAP rocky.

Let’s go on an adventure!

Baroque Hostel & Coworking Budapest
A Budapest hostel with a charming and eloquent design.
  • Dorm (mixed): From $11/night
  • Private Room: From $38/night
  • Address: 1071 Budapest, Dózsa György u. 80/garden entrance, Hungary

The Baroque Hostel is housed in a building previously owned by a wealthy Baron’s family. It has been preserved in the original baroque-bohemian style with a fresh, modern, minimalist design.

Baroque’s great location puts you in the middle of the action. The hostel is located near the city park (Vrosliget), the Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Hall, the Szechenyi Thermal Baths, and the Skating Rink. Private rooms start at around €32, which is more or less in line with many other budget hostels in Budapest. For the broke backpackers, they even offer low-capacity dorm rooms (many 4-person dorms) so that you never feel like you’re sleeping in an overcrowded flophouse. It’s a thumbs-up from me.

Maverick Urban Lodge

Maverick Urban Lodge Budapest
  • Dorm (mixed): From $10/night
  • Private Room: From $59/night
  • Address: 1093 Budapest, Lónyay u. 31., Hungary

Few hostels in Budapest can match the epic social atmosphere found at Maverick Urban Lodge. They really do go all out, by providing free hostel organises events including wine tasting nights and pub crawls. If you’re looking for a social hostel stay, the Maverick Urban Lodge fits the bill to a T.

The convenient location of Maverick Urban Lodge is absolutely solid—you can discover the best of Budapest from here. The building is located one minute away from the most central tram and subway lines and just a few steps from the Great Market Hall. All the top sights of the city are within walking distance; you don’t even need a public transportation ticket.

Maverick Urban Lodge is also great because they also have plenty of common areas to hang out in, including a roof terrace. If you book a private room, you will have your own private bathroom. But the dorm rooms are pretty cool too, featuring dual outlets, curtains, and reading lamps to provide privacy and comfort. There is a fully-equipped kitchen for guests to use as well as super-fast Wi-Fi. A sweet deal if you ask me.

  • Private Room: From $43-$65/night
  • Address: Budapest, Kazinczy u. 5, 1075 Hungary

Getting Insured BEFORE Visiting Budapest
