Travel Dubai - The Broke Backpacker

Dubai

Dubai is ridiculously over the top, and that's kind of the point. Skyscrapers poke out of the desert, luxury cars are everywhere and the shopping malls are basically cities in themselves. But there's another side to Dubai too, with old souks, cheap eats, desert adventures and beaches where you can escape the madness for a while. It isn't the obvious backpacker destination, but that's exactly what makes it interesting.

    Dubai Travel FAQs

What's the best way to get around Dubai?

The Metro is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get around the city, with two main lines connecting many popular areas. Buses, trams and taxis fill in the gaps, and a Nol card makes using public transport straightforward.

What should I wear in Dubai?

Dubai is fairly relaxed about clothing, particularly in hotels, beaches and tourist areas, but dressing more conservatively is appreciated in historic neighbourhoods and religious or cultural sites. Swimwear is fine at beaches and pools, but isn't appropriate in places such as shopping malls or business districts.

Can you drink alcohol in Dubai?

Yes, but there are rules. Alcohol is available to people aged 21 and over in licensed hotels, bars, restaurants and other licensed venues. Being drunk and disorderly in public and drink-driving are not permitted.

Is Dubai actually worth visiting if you're backpacking?

It depends what you're looking for. Dubai isn't the classic shoestring backpacking destination, but it makes an interesting stop if you want something completely different from the usual Middle East or Southeast Asia backpacker route. You can experience the futuristic side of the city, explore older neighbourhoods and souks, head into the desert and still find ways to travel without going full luxury.
