This place is straight out of a fever dream—stilted treehouses tucked deep in the Sri Lankan jungle, wide open to the elements with nothing but a mosquito net between you and the forest. No walls, no aircon, no fake comforts. Just the sounds of the forest and the kind of peace that hits differently when you’re off-grid.

It’s basic, yeah, but it works. Most of your time ends up being spent out exploring anyway, cruising around backroads, stumbling on waterfalls, and hanging with other travellers over curry and beer at the little on-site restaurant. It’s the kind of spot that strips things back and somehow makes everything feel more alive.

Colombo

Colombo is the cultural and political centre of the country. The capital city is where Sri Lanka shows off its modern side, with skyscrapers and luxury homes. But don’t be fooled—this city still has its fair share of history and culture.

Sri Lanka is a small island with a big personality. It’s got a little bit of everything, from lush mountains covered with tea tree plantations to golden beaches with world-class surfing conditions to ancient temples to modern cities. It’s mind-blowingly diverse, and each area, town, and region has its own vibe.

Mirissa is your main port of call when exploring the south coast. With beginner-friendly waves, banging restaurants and an array of accomodation ot suit every budget, Mirissa is the south coast’s most popular town—and for good reason.

If you need your culture fix, then Galle should be at the top of your list. This 17th-century Dutch walled town is uber artsy, with a slow-paced vibe that feels oddly European. It’s a great place to stock up on your souvenirs and try a few quirky restaurants that stray from the usual curry and rice.

I recommend all first-time visitors stay in Kandy. It’s set on the banks of a lake and is really overflowing with local and colonial history. This is a great spot to soak up the authentic Sri Lankan charm while exploring cultural sites, such as the ancient Temple of the Tooth. 

Sigiriya and Dambulla are two adjacent towns in the centre of the country. They’re especially wonderful if you have a thing for history and ancient wonders. Dambulla is the central city and transport hub, while Sigiriya is home to cave temples and archaeological wonders that will make you feel like an explorer from the 1800s, as well as some of the must-visit places in Sri Lanka.

Then there are the coastlines. For surf lovers, Arugam Bay on the east coast is the ultimate place to stay in Sri Lanka; It’s laid-back, sunny, and full of surf schools and that chill beachy vibe you crave from a tropical holiday. 

Solo travellers will find a special kind of peace in Ella, a mountain town with stunning views, hikes, cafes, and more waterfalls than you can count. This is also one of the regions where Ceylon tea is grown and produced. Visiting these plantations is both a historic and naturally impressive experience.

Colombo, the capital city and densest region in the country, is totally unique from these other spots. It offers a genuine city experience with a modern skyline, as well as local food markets and a vibrant nightlife scene, making it perfect for those who want to experience a taste of Sri Lanka’s urban and cultural scene.

There is a lot to see in Sri Lanka. I recommend spending time in at least two of these places to really experience what the country has to offer.

1. Mirissa – Where to Stay in Sri Lanka for Beach Bum Lovers

If you’re thinking of setting up camp anywhere on the south coast, chances are you’ve probably stumbled upon Mirissa. Smack bang in the middle of all of the south coast’s highlights, Mirissa is by far the most accessible point to have as a base and explore other coastal areas. From Hiriketiya, Ahangama to Weligama, nothing is more than an hour’s bike away from Mirissa, making it the perfect launching point for you to live your best beach bum life.

It’s quite the tourist hotspot, so expect it to fill up during the peak seasons. Saying this, the beaches never feel uncomfortably busy as, like I said, there are so many other points to get out to and explore. Don’t be surprised if you drive 15 minutes out to a beach that you have completely to yourself!

And more tourists aren’t all bad, after all. Mirissa is home to some of the best food on the island, with a myriad of restaurants ranging from your classic curry and rice afare to international cuisine. Arguably one of the biggest backpacker hubs on the island, Mirissa is great for solo travellers looking for their Sri Lanka crew, as there are tons of cool hostels. Make sure to check out Doctors House, a biweekly beach party that aaaaalways gets a lil too rowdy.

BeachMirissa Hotel | Best Hotel in Mirissa

Recently done up and still run by the same local family, this place gets classic Sri Lankan hospitality right—warm, laid-back, and genuine. Breakfast hits the mark with solid portions and proper flavour. It’s right on the beach with its own loungers, directly opposite Mirissa’s main turtle spot. The rooms are massive, with wide sea-view terraces, and there’s a pool just behind the beach if you want a change of scene.

JJ’s Hostel | Best Hostel in Mirissa

JJ’s Hostel is more of a hotel feel than a hostel, but still manages to be super social with daily events and a good crowd. The pool area stays clean, and there’s daily yoga if you’re up for it. Breakfast is solid—about eight choices plus coffee and tea. The location’s spot-on, with loads of space to chill, a shared kitchen, and a really friendly team who always come through with local tips and help when you need it.

Nalu | Best Airbnb in Mirissa

Nalu’s location is absolutely perfect – restaurants and boutique shops within walking distance. The rooms are clean, spacious, and thoughtfully decorated, with a natural, relaxed vibe. The entire building feels inviting, and the handpicked recommendations for restaurants and things to do in Mirissa and nearby areas will genuinely add value to your stay.

2. Galle – Where to Stay in Sri Lanka for Artsy Vibes

If you want colonial history meets metropolitan artsy vibes, Galle is your gal. The heart of it all is Galle Fort, a 17th-century Dutch walled town that’s still very much alive. Wander the streets and you’ll find crumbling bastions, tucked-away cafes, old churches, and shops selling everything from handwoven sarongs to dusty vintage maps.

Galle’s got an artsy edge that doesn’t shout about itself, yet it’s still one of the most beautiful places in the country. Inside the old fort, creativity lives in the details—faded walls, quiet studios, and tucked-away galleries run by locals and long-stayers who’ve come and stayed for the slower pace of city life. You’ll find handmade prints, textiles, ceramics, and art that is well worth taking up space in your backpack.

Expect artsy boutique cafes, locals passing by on bicycles and fishermen coming in with their catch of the day. Don’t forget to check out one of the oh-so-cool cocktail bars come sunset.

Brixia Cafe & Guest | Best Hotel in Galle

Just a short walk from the fort, Brixia Café & Guest feels like a real escape in Galle. The hosts receive you as if you are family and will really spoil you when it comes to their breakfast spread. The place has that relaxed boutique charm—spacious, comfortable rooms that are easy to settle into and hard to leave. The location is unbeatable — tucked away in a quiet spot but still within walking distance to all the main attractions in Galle.

You’re in for a wonderful stay at Old Parkland Hostel; it’s way more like a homestay than a hostel. Pinidu is a great host! He’ll take you on a tour of his garden, make an authentic breakfast every morning and give amazing recommendations of things to do! When you’re not busy exploring Galle, you can kick back and chill out in the beautiful gardens.

The Love Shack is in an incredible position, literally steps from a beautiful sandy bay, with friendly staff in the on-site cafe (where you get a cheeky discount too). The apartment itself is spacious and relaxed, with a private rooftop terrace overlooking the beach, perfect for slow mornings or dinner at sunset.

Inside, there’s a comfy sitting room with a TV and a proper kitchen for those who want to get creative with the local produce. Out front, the terrace comes with sun loungers and uninterrupted views of the Dewata surf break—ideal for keeping an eye on the swell between naps.

9. Take a short tuk-tuk ride to nearby beaches like Unawatuna or Dalawella for a swim

3. Kandy – Where to Stay in Sri Lanka for Your First Time

Kandy is one big UNESCO World Heritage Site, and clearly, history flows through the streets like a river. It was the last capital city of the time when ancient kings ruled the country. It’s packed with ancient temples, one of the most famous being the Buddhist temple of the Sacred Tooth.  Although it’s not located on the coastline, the city has other perks and is somewhere you should deffo include on your Sri Lanka Itinerary. Geographically, it’s surrounded by mountains and gorgeous tea plantations, making it the perfect place to explore the traditional Ceylon tea plantations.  

Accommodations around here range from boutique resorts to private house rentals and hostels. There’s a little bit of something for everyone, which is why this is such a wonderful place to stay in Sri Lanka for your first visit.

Simpson’s Forest – Luxury Boutique Resort & Spa – Kandy | Best Hotel in Kandy

Simpson’s Forest is a peaceful and extravagant resort in the jungle. The hotel is a perfect example of nature meets luxury, with high ceilings, cool marble floors, and incredible dining all tucked away in the calm embrace of the Sri Lankan jungle.

The grounds are spotless and well-maintained. From the swimming pool to the gym to the on-site bar and billiards table, this hotel has plenty of amenities, without being uncomfortably pretentious.

Bunkalow | Best Hostel in Kandy

Set on the Mahaweli River, Bunkalow is a residential house turned hostel in the depths of tranquil Kandy. This place to stay in Sri Lanka is designed to feel like your home away from home, featuring shared spaces that include a living space and dining area. With six bedrooms and four bathrooms, it’s a solid choice for a solo traveller or even a group.

The hostel has two dipping jacuzzi-sized pools in the garden. But the real treat is the beautiful trails and hikes that start right at the hostel’s doorstep.

La Casa del Sol | Best Airbnb in Kandy

From within the walls of La Casa del Sol, you might think you were on a Greek Island. This gorgeous little home features white, curved walls and an ergonomically shaped pool inspired by Cycladic architecture. 

The accommodation is part of a world-famous collection of villas loved for their unique architecture, and it’s clear why. The swimming pool is an easy highlight, but my personal favourite part of this spot is its living room, which feels intimate and homey.

4. Sigiriya / Dambulla – Best Place to Stay in Sri Lanka For History

Sigiriya and Dambulla, two adjacent towns in the heart of Sri Lanka, are a treasure trove of ancient wonders. Naturally, the area attracts plenty of history buffs and nature lovers. Dambulla is the busier hub, while Sigiriya is the UNESCO-recognised cultural centre. The locals here are friendly villagers and expats drawn into the charm of the low-key rural atmosphere.

When it comes to finding where to stay in Sri Lanka’s cultural haven, accommodations range from eco-lodges to treehouse cottages and even hostels. Things are relatively affordable around here, making it a top spot for budget outdoor adventures, like those visiting to climb to the peak of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress – the largest in the country.

Sigiriya Forest Edge feels like a calm oasis at the door of one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks, the ancient rock fortress. After climbing to its peak, there is no better place to return to than the lush gardens at this hotel. 

The rooms are spacious and beautifully designed, featuring high ceilings, ample sunlight, and wooden floors. Plus, when you crave a little activity without having to leave the property, you can hit the gym or play a game of snooker or table tennis with fellow guests.

Tree House Hostel Sigiriya | Best Hostel in Sigiriya / Dambulla

This hostel is one of those places that I would dream about staying at as a little child. It’s located in the heart of the forest on stilted treehouse buildings. No walls, no aircon, just a good old mosquito net and a well-needed breeze. 

The amenities are basic, but it won’t make a big difference because you’ll likely be spending most of your time exploring the Sri Lankan neighbourhood and socialising with your dormmates in the social area.

Nethmini Leege Cottage | Best Treehouse in Sigiriya / Dambulla

Nethmini Leege Cottage is a little treehouse built into the forest just outside the Minneriya National Park. It’s rugged and rustic, which makes it feel a bit like a homestay experience, just without the hosts living on the property. 

That said, the owners are proud of their home and will do absolutely anything to ensure your stay is a great one. Its location is a real highlight, just a short drive to Lion’s Rock, the Dambulla caves, and the Golden Temple.

5. Arugam Bay – Best Area in Sri Lanka For Surfing

If you live for the sun, surf, and laid-back vibes that both these things inevitably bring with them, you’ll love staying in Arugam Bay. Located on the east coast of Sri Lanka, this coastal spot is a magnet for surfers, backpackers, and solo travellers looking for the classic beach town experience. This is the kind of place where your day starts with a yoga practice and ends with a sunset surf – it’s bliss.

The local community is a mix of fishermen and expats, with a particularly fast-growing expat surf scene. If you’re a girly looking to shred some waves in A-bay, the women’s surf scene here is particularly insane and something well worth checking out.

There are plenty of accommodation options in this Sri Lankan neighbourhood, ranging from bungalows to boutique hotels and hostels—lots and lots of hostels. 

Canggu Surf Hotel | Boutique Hotel in Arugam Bay

If you’re on a budget, the Canggu Surf Hotel is one of the best low-cost boutique places to stay in Sri Lanka’s Arugam Bay. The rooms are spotless and straightforward, with air conditioning and a private workspace.

The restaurant is just as impressive, serving international cuisines from Mexican to Sri Lankan. There is also an on-site coffee shop, the perfect place to start the day if you need to catch up on some emails.

The Spice Trail | Luxury Hotel in Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is almost like the equivalent of Indonesia’s Bali, except way less crowded. So it only makes sense that the accommodations are similar. Take this classic villa-inspired hotel, for example. Just a short walk from the best waves in the bay, it’s a peaceful place to unwind after a day in the surf.

It offers the perfect mix of privacy and hotel amenities, with a delicious breakfast served each morning, helpful staff, and detached rooms that feel more like villas than hotel suites.

Little Lagoon Room in Eco-Friendly Boutique Hostel | Top Hostel in Arugam Bay

One night in this little eco-friendly hostel, and it will be clear as day how passionate the owners are about the surrounding environment. It’s technically a hostel, with some dorm rooms for those who want to save. However, I would highly recommend booking one of the private suites. This way, the accommodation feels like a boutique hotel, and a really beautiful one, at that.

Some of the rooms are set in unused shipping containers, while others are located in a house with access to a full kitchen and dining area. Breakfast is served each morning, which is a good time to ask the staff for recommendations on this neighbourhood in Sri Lanka.

6. Ella – Best Area in Sri Lanka for Solo Travellers

Today, Ella is home to a mix of locals, yogis, and solo travellers seeking peace and zen. It’s famous for its tea plantations, waterfalls, hiking trails, and the iconic train that passes through its verdant mountains. Despite its increase in popularity, it’s still one of my favourite places to visit in Sri Lanka when I need a break from the beach.

Accommodations range from luxury resorts to inns and hostels, with something to suit every budget and travel style. The vibe is down-to-earth and rugged, making it easy to meet like-minded travellers or just enjoy some solitude as a solo traveller.

98 Acres is one of those places you thought only existed in magazines. It’s five-star luxury, with exquisite rooms with private pools, terraces, and lounges that each feel like a presidential suite. Don’t worry, there are some traditional rooms, too.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted with 360-degree views of the surrounding tea plantations. Everything about this place to stay in Sri Lanka, from the spa to the pools to the fresh mountain air to the high-end dining, is pure indulgence.

Beyond Nomad Luxury Hostel | Most Unique Hostel in Ella

Beyond Nomad breaks all the stereotypes of a traditional hotel with its camping-inspired dorm rooms, spacious shared areas, and social vibe. It’s located on the mountain by the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, close to the  Ella Spice Garden and the Ella Railway Station.

The balcony is the star of the show. It overlooks the surrounding valleys and mountains. Breakfast is included in the nightly rate, and the restaurant serves dinner, too.

You’ll struggle to take your eyes off the views from the deck at this beautiful self-catering in Ella. It’s set above the tree line overlooking the green tea fields and rushing waterfalls.

It’s a bit of a mix between a self-catering and a hotel, with breakfast provided by the property each morning, and a kitchen shared by the owners and other guests at the inn.

Sri Lanka is one of those places with a little something to offer every type of traveller. It’s bursting at the seams with activity, adventure, and history. Whether you’re craving the cultural heartbeat of ancient temples in Sigiriya, the lush tropical charm of Kandy, or the surfing vibes of Arugam Bay, each Sri Lankan neighbourhood brings its own flavour of ambience and experience.
