Cebu is a spectacular island and one of the best places to stay in the Philippines. Pristine white-sand beaches, lush green jungles, and crystal clear turquoise waters are just a few of the features that initially draw tourists from around the world.
But listen, Cebu Island is a big ass island.
Once you arrive at Mactan-Cebu International Airport and your Filipino backpacking adventure begins, you have so many choices to make about where to head next. But I get it, I get it, too much choice isn’t always the best thing. So, to make things simple, let me take you through the best neighbourhoods to stay in Cebu and who they are best for:
1. Cebu City – Where to Stay in Cebu for Your First Time
Cebu City is my top choice for where to stay if you’re visiting Cebu for the first time. It is a busy and energetic city that seamlessly combines its diverse and rich history with modern architecture, delicious restaurants, and wild nightlife.
If you love to shop, Cebu City is for you! This thriving metropolis is home to a number of excellent malls and shopping centres that offer everything from high-end designers to high-street shops.
You’ll also find a vast array of local shops and independent boutiques lining Cebu City’s buzzing streets. There are also some lovely Cebu Airbnbs on the outskirts of the city for those who want a bit more peace and quiet, whereas the centre is full of budget hotels and luxury hotels. Needless to say, there is accommodation for everyone in Cebu City.

- The Vibe: Busy, energetic, with malls, markets, and lively streets

The Flying Fish Hostel Cebu | Best Hostel
This super cool Cebu hostel might not be the cheapest, but I’m convinced the aesthetic and value is unmatched. The pool inside the courtyard couldn’t have been more perfect to deal with Cebu’s heat, and the onsite restaurant was fab. The modern, industrial-designed space just exudes cool, and all the room options (dorm beds and private) are clean and comfy. The hostel is also situated in a gated community complete with security, so you really feel extra safe!
Beautiful condominium | Best Airbnb
This absolutely stunning Airbnb is the perfect place for your first stay in Cebu. Located in a quiet location, you can walk to the main places to visit in Cebu in no time, while also being able to enjoy a good night’s sleep. The condo is modern and designed in a Japanese style, has an amazing view of the city, and gives you access to the rooftop gym as well.
2. Malapascua Island – Best Place to Stay in Cebu on a Budget
Malapascua Island is an isolated and quiet island located off the northern coast of Cebu. It is small and idyllic with golden-sand beaches, swaying palm trees, lush green jungle, and turquoise waters.
This tiny coral island is one of my favourite islands in the Philippines and is a popular destination for scuba divers and snorkelers. Off Malapascua Island, divers can frolic with thresher sharks and swim alongside manta rays in crystal-clear waters.
Malapascua also gets my vote for where to stay in Cebu if you’re on a budget. Dotted throughout this idyllic island is a good selection of affordable hostels and budget hotels, as well as beach resorts for divers, homestays, and guesthouses.
So, if you’re looking for a relaxing vacation in paradise that won’t break the bank, stay in Malapascua!
- Best For: Diving, beaches, couples, backpackers, underwater photography
- The Vibe: Laid-back, small island vibes, more rustic, friendly dive-community
- Proximity to Airport: ~4-5 hours from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) including land and boat transfer
- Transport Level: Moderate. Requires a long drive to Maya Port and a short boat ride, but it’s walkable once you’re on the island
- Budget: Mid-range, with affordable guesthouses and higher-end dive resorts
- Crowds: Moderate in high season, mostly divers. Still quieter than other major Philippine islands

- Dive with thresher sharks at Monad Shoal.
- Go cliff jumping at Los Bamboos.
- Try binignit or other local Visayan desserts.
- Relax on the soft sands of Sugar Beach.
- Spend a slow day at Langob Beach.
- Visit the Malapascua Lighthouse for views over the island.
- Walk the coastline and enjoy the restaurants along Bounty Beach.
- Take a day trip to Calanggaman Island, known for its sandbar and the Ogton Cave Pool.
Malapascua Starlight Resort | Best Budget Hotel
This clean and cosy hotel has everything you need for a comfortable stay close to nature. Rooms come with garden views, air-conditioning, and internet access. Room service is available, and there’s also a snack bar on site.
A 5-minute stroll will get you to Bounty Beach, and Mangrove Bay is less than a mile away. A wining Cebu hotel if you ask me!
Hippocampus Beach Resort | Best Resort
Situated right on the seaside, beach resorts are rarely this reasonably priced! Due to its proximity to popular diving spots like Monad Shoal, diving excursions and snorkelling are offered for an additional charge.
Beachfront rooms come with private bathrooms and Wifi access, and there’s an international restaurant and bar downstairs. Easily one of the best hotels on the island.
Malapascua Budget | Best Hostel
This lively hostel is one of the best places in Cebu to stay because it has comfortable and well-equipped rooms, a great location, and a social atmosphere. They have free wifi and their helpful staff can help organize all your activities to ensure you have an unforgettable stay in Malapascua.
ThresherShack Inn | Best Guesthouse
Visiting the Philippines on a budget? Here you’ll have a bed in a shared room and access to all common areas. Keep in mind that there’s no aircon in the room, so it can get a bit hot during summer. However, the location is amazing – walk to the beach, shops, and restaurants that are close by in only a couple of minutes.
3. Mango Square – Best Area to Stay in Cebu for Nightlife
Now I know I said get out of the city… but if you want nightlife to be on your Cebu itinerary, there’s no better place than the city! Mango Square is a lively and exciting neighbourhood located in the heart of Cebu City. It is a buzzing neighbourhood and is my number one choice for where to stay in Cebu for nightlife.
The epicentre of Cebu’s nightlife, Mango Square is packed with the best bars, pubs, and restaurants as well as thriving clubs and boisterous dance floors. When it comes to where to stay in Mango Square, many of the best luxury hotels are located nearby and you can find some budget hotels in the area too.
So whether you want to enjoy laidback drinks or dance from dusk until dawn to the latest tunes, Mango Square is bursting with incredible and unforgettable options.
- Best For: Nightlife, partying, bar-hopping, late-night food
- The Vibe: Energetic, loud, busy, with a mix of clubs, bars, and street action
- Proximity to Airport: ~30-40 mins from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB)
- Transport Level: Easy. You’ll be very central. Plenty of taxis are available.
- Budget: Affordable to mid-range (varies by club and bar)
- Crowds: Big crowds late at night, especially on weekends and holidays
Hotel Capada | Best Hotel
With a large garden and spacious terrace, provides more space to relax than most Cebu hotels. Family rooms are available, as well as free wifi and a 24-hour reception. The hotel is within walking distance of various attractions and monuments, including the Cebu Heritage Monument and Magellan’s Cross.
Cebu Pungko-Pungko Hostel | Best Hostel
There aren’t actually many hostels in Mango Square because the area is so small. Cebu Pungko-Pungko Hostel exists though, which is a fantastic budget place to stay right in Mango Square. They have all types of dorm rooms to suit any kind of budget traveller. Choose from 10-bed, 4-bed or even female-only dorms!
Baseline Residences | Best Airbnb
This Airbnb is super cheap! Baseline Residences offers condo units with all the amenities you will need for a short stay and at an extremely affordable price. Situated right in Mango Square, this is a great spot to crash after a wild night out. It even has a dedicated workspace for those Monday hangovers.
Things to See and Do in Mango Square
- Enjoy the nightlife at the many bars and clubs that line Mango Avenue.
- Sing your heart out at one of the many karaoke bars in the area.
- Try late-night street food and local snacks from vendors around the square.
- Visit nearby Robinsons Fuente for shopping, cafés, and air-conditioned breaks.
- Walk to Fuente Osmeña Circle and enjoy the lively atmosphere around the roundabout.
- Check out live bands or acoustic sets at nearby music bars.
- Grab a casual meal or drinks at one of the open-late restaurants around Mango Avenue.
- People-watch and soak up the energetic, neon-lit vibe of Cebu’s busiest nightlife district.
4. Moalboal – Coolest Place to Stay in Cebu
On the southwestern coast of Cebu Island is Moalboal. One of the coolest neighbourhoods in Cebu. Staying in Moalboal is great because it offers world-class diving, exquisite white-sand beaches, impressive jungles and waterfalls, hiking, and plenty of charming restaurants.
It is a small town set on Cebu’s southwestern coast that offers an array of incredible natural experiences as well as authentic Filipino culture. Surrounded by coral reefs, Moalboal is an excellent destination for divers and snorkelers. Here you can explore colourful coral and swim with exotic fish in crystal clear turquoise waters.
Hikers and trekkers will also enjoy the fruits of Moalboal. The area is covered in dense tropical rainforests with rivers, waterfalls and canyons just waiting to be explored.
There is a great backpacking scene here and it’s a fantastic place to meet other travellers. There are so many cool hostels in Moalboal, so finding a good place to stay here should be easy.
- Best For: Snorkelling, diving, backpackers, beaches, adventure
- The Vibe: Relaxed, outdoorsy, social vibes, with a lively backpacker area and quiet beaches
- Proximity to Airport: ~2.5-3 hours from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB)
- Transport Level: Moderate. Buses, vans, and private transfers are available. You can also use tricycles for local trips.
- Budget: Affordable to mid-range (plenty of budget stays and lush resorts)
- Crowds: Moderate to high in peak season, especially around Panagsama and sardine-run areas

- Bask in the sunshine at beautiful and quiet White Beach.
- Experience the famous sardine run right off Panagsama Beach.
- Get your adrenaline pumping! Go canyonnering at Kawasan Falls.
- Take a short trip to Lambug Beach in nearby Badian for soft sand and calm water.
- Explore Basdiot Panagsama, a top spot for diving and spotting marine life.
- Strap on your snorkel and discover the vibrant coral reefs just offshore
Garden Village Resort | Best Hotel
Spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and stunning views – you won’t find a better hotel in Moalboal, one of the coolest places to stay in Cebu. Rooms are equipped with private showers and a myriad of modern amenities. Guests can enjoy a swimming pool and an on-site restaurant.
Dolphin House Resort | Best Resort
The Dolphin House Resort is ideally located in Moalboal. It is close to the beach and popular attractions throughout the island. Rooms are stylish and luxurious and each is outfitted with a refrigerator, ceiling fan, and wifi access. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool and a terrace.
MOHO Hostel | Best Hostel
MOHO is the place to be in Moalboal, trust me. They have free drinks between 8-8:30 pm and have all sorts of fun and games going on such as beer pong and quiz nights. The beds are really comfy and they have a nice chill area where you can read or work.
5. Lapu Lapu – Best Neighbourhood in Cebu for Families to Stay In
Lapu Lapu is a small island situated east of Cebu City. It’s one of the busiest areas of the city and is often a jumping-off point for travellers to explore other parts of the Philippines. But, travel outside of the centre, and Lapu Lapu is a magnificent island with beautiful beaches, swaying palm trees and shimmering azure waters.
Idyllic Lapu Lapu is my top pick for where to stay in Cebu with kids because it has an excellent selection of things to do. From swimming, snorkelling, and lounging on the beach, to day trips, natural attractions, and Filipino cultural shows, Lapu Lapu is bursting with things to see, do and enjoy.
- Best For: Beaches, water sports, families, resorts, island-hopping
- The Vibe: Relaxed, coastal, resorty, with a mix of local neighbourhoods and tourist spots
- Proximity to Airport: ~10-20 mins from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB)
- Transport Level: Easy. Plenty of taxis available and tricycles for short trips
- Budget: Mid-range to high (heaps of resorts, but local eateries and budget stays exist amongst)
- Crowds: Moderate to high in peak season, especially around the beaches and island-hopping ports

- Catch a ride on a colourful jeepney and explore the island.
- Experience Filipino cultural performances at Jungle Restaurant and Entertainment.
- Learn to scuba dive and discover the vibrant marine life around Mactan.
- Relax on the beach at Bluewater Maribago Resort.
- Visit the Lapu Lapu Monument, a shrine to the local hero who resisted Magellan in 1521.
- Take an island-hopping trip to Hilutungan, Nalusuan, Caohagan, or Pandanon.
- Take a ferry from Cebu City for a long but rewarding day trip to Bohol.
Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel | Best Hotel
The Costabella Tropical Beach Hotel is my favourite Cebu hotel. It is a four-star luxury hotel with tennis courts, a swimming pool, a private beach and a variety of family-friendly activities. Its rooms are spacious and peaceful, perfect for relaxing after a day at the beach.
Murals Mactan | Best Hostel in Lapu Lapu
Murals Mactan is everything you could possibly want from a hostel – and then some. It’s modern and stylishly decorated, creating a comfortable space for you to relax in. It’s just a 15-minute drive from the airport and within walking distance of shops, eateries, and grocery stores. A buffet breakfast is complimentary and served on the rooftop café.
The Gray Den | Best Airbnb in Lapu Lapu
The Gray Den is a top-tier private stay in Lapu Lapu. For an extremely fair price, you get a very aesthetic grey studio with a luscious double bed and a big TV screen with Netflix. The best thing about this place is the little balcony offering stunning water and city views.

Where to stay in Oslob?
Now then. I’ve excluded Oslob from this list on purpose…
Whilst the town of Oslob itself is a great place to visit, the entire place is famous for the unethical exploitation of whale sharks and the tourism this brings with it. Seeing whale sharks in Oslob can be done ethically, but most of the tours and expeditions are not something I want to promote as they feed the whale sharks to ring them into predictable zones which disrupts their natural behaviour 🙁

Cebu is nothing short of paradise. It’s without a doubt one of my favourite places to visit in the Philippines and hopefully from this guide, you can see why!
