Picture this.

You’re standing on a beautiful stretch of white sand beach, sand between your toes, the warmth of the sun on your skin.

Snorkel at the ready, you head toward the crystal clear blue waters. You dive in. You enter the enchanting underwater world. Colourful fish surround you. Wow.

You come back to the shore and start walking toward the beach. You can see delicious food shops along the beach and lush jungle all around you. Double wow.

It’s no wonder the island of Cebu attracts travellers from all over the world. The landscape is EUPHORIC, the food is mind-blowing, the diving is magical and to top it off,  the price is kind to your wallet. A true tropical paradise.

But Cebu is a large island with bumpy roads, so getting from one side to the other can take all day. So, deciding which area on the island you want to stay in is important.

But don’t you worry about a thing! I’ve written this guide on where to stay in Cebu so you know exactly where is best for you and your travel needs.

Whether you’re looking to party all night long, explore the coral reefs, or lounge on the sandy beaches, after reading this Cebu guide you’ll be able to book with confidence and ease.

So without further ado, here are my top picks for where to stay in Cebu, Philippines.

Where Is the Best Place to Stay in Cebu?

Listen, Cebu Island is a big ass island. Once you arrive at Mactan-Cebu International Airport and your Filipino backpacking adventure begins, you have so many choices to make about where to head next. But I get it, I get it, too much choice isn’t always the best thing.

Now then, I recommend that you stay in Cebu City for a day or two at either the start or end of your Cebu adventure. But, for the rest of your time? Go elsewhere.

Cebu Island has such a stunning range of beach towns, jungles and downright gorgeous places to stay, and you probably didn’t come here to hang around in a city. So, if you’re looking for a specific place to have the ultimate beach holiday, these are my highest recommendations for places to stay on Cebu Island.

FAQs About Finding a Place to Stay in Cebu

Here’s what people usually ask me about the areas to stay in Cebu, Philippines. If you have any questions of your own, drop them in the comments below. 🙂

Is it better to stay in Cebu City or Moalboal?

I’ve got to side with Moalboal here. Moalbboal still has a lively atmosphere and some decent nightlife without the added chaos of rushing traffic and stinky city smells. Chances are you’ll be staying in Cebu City before or after your flight anyway, so defo try to get to Moalboal for some chill time.

Is it better to stay in Mactan or Cebu City?

Hmmm, I think Cebu City. This one’s very close and I guess it depends on which type of traveller you are. For backpackers, there is a bigger travelling community in Cebu City, so that’s why it gets my vote. If you’re looking to hand around for more than a day or two though, I would begin to consider Mactan as superior.

Where to stay in Oslob?

Now then. I’ve excluded Oslob from this list on purpose…

Whilst the town of Oslob itself is a great place to visit, the entire place is famous for the unethical exploitation of whale sharks and the tourism this brings with it. Seeing whale sharks in Oslob can be done ethically, but most of the tours and expeditions are not something I want to promote as they feed the whale sharks to ring them into predictable zones which disrupts their natural behaviour.
