Travel Poland - The Broke Backpacker

Poland

Poland is seriously underrated. Its cities know how to party, its food is ridiculously comforting and there's a fascinating history woven through just about everything. Spend a few days exploring Kraków's cobbled streets, get stuck into pierogi and Polish vodka, then head beyond the cities for forests, mountains and the Baltic coast. It's affordable, welcoming and has a lot more going on than you might expect.

    Poland Travel FAQs

    Is Poland cheap for backpackers?

Compared with many Western European destinations, Poland can be very budget-friendly. Hostels, local restaurants, public transport and supermarkets are all relatively affordable, although prices are higher in tourist-heavy areas and larger cities.

What Polish food should you try?

Pierogi are the obvious starting point, but don't stop there. Try żurek, bigos, placki ziemniaczane, kielbasa and Polish cheesecake. And if you're visiting in winter, a steaming bowl of soup with some crusty bread is basically backpacker survival food.

    What is Polish vodka like?

Vodka is deeply woven into Polish drinking culture, and Poland has a long history of producing it. You'll find everything from classic clear vodka to flavoured varieties, and it's often served chilled and accompanied by small snacks. If you're offered na zdrowie, that's your cue to raise your glass and say cheers.

    Can you visit Auschwitz-Birkenau?

Yes. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum is around 70 km from Kraków and documents the history of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp. You can visit independently or join a guided tour, and it's worth allowing several hours. As a place of remembrance, it's important to approach a visit respectfully.
