Al Maryah and Al Reem Islands
The small island of Al Maryah sits between Al Reem and the main island of Abu Dhabi. It’s become a business and lifestyle destination and has a sophisticated atmosphere which sets it apart from the high-energy tourist vibe much of the city has.
Abu Dhabi’s Five Best Neighborhoods to Stay in
In a city as diverse as Abu Dhabi, deciding which area to stay in can have a big impact on how much you enjoy your vacation. Of course, it’s difficult not to enjoy a vacation in Abu Dhabi. However, picking the right neighborhood makes it easy to take advantage of the attractions you’re most interested in seeing!
A bit of geography to clarify things… The country of the United Arab Emirates is made up of seven separate emirates, (like states), and Abu Dhabi is one of them. If you’re going to visit Dubai, Abu Dhabi is the capital city just down the coast, definitely somewhere you want to check out. Let’s have a closer look at the top five neighborhoods.
The eight-kilometer stretch of the Abu Dhabi Corniche is considered the heart of the city. You’ll have plenty of options for accommodation here, as well as loads of places to explore. It’s the ideal place to stay when visiting Abu Dhabi for the first time.
The neighborhood of Al Zahiyah on the northern end of the Corniche is still sometimes referred to as the “Tourist Club Area.” This is a convenient neighborhood to stay in if you’re hoping to do any partying or be close to the high-end attractions of Al Maryah Island while still staying at reasonably priced, budget-friendly accommodation.
If you’re hoping for a more laid-back spot, then the mostly residential island of Al Reem is a good option. It’s full of parks and has easy access to Reem Beach, and is popular for travelers deciding where to stay in Abu Dhabi with family.
Then I’ve got Saadiyat Island, known for its luxury vacation resorts, and Yas Island which is packed with theme parks, water parks, and more. Accommodation tends to be a bit pricier in these locations, but it’s still possible to find budget-friendly options.
Although these are the most visited areas of Abu Dhabi, there’s much more to explore. Closer to the Abu Dhabi International Airport, Khalifa City is an up-and-coming area. You’ll find some great restaurants and interesting architecture. Al Raha is another beach area that features traditional villa-style Emirati buildings.
1. The Corniche – Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi for Your First Time
If you haven’t been to Abu Dhabi before, then finding central accommodation along the Corniche is a must. The eight-kilometer waterfront is lined with pedestrian pathways where you can enjoy the scenery. Plus, with year-round sunshine, it’s always a great day to spend at the beach.
And what a beach to spend it at… Abu Dhabi’s Corniche beachfront has been awarded coveted Blue Flag status. This means this beach stretch has been internationally recognized by this eco-label guaranteeing clean and safe seawater.
Finding accommodation in the Abu Dhabi Corniche means walking to many of the top attractions, shops, and restaurants is easy. You have to see the Emirates Palace! Plus, the view of the sunsets is pretty killer and something you’ll want to include in your vacation photos.
The St. Regis Abu Dhabi | Best Hotel in the Corniche

Hide Yo’ Money!FAQs About Finding a Place to Stay in Abu Dhabi.
Here’s what people usually ask me about the areas of Abu Dhabi and where to stay.
What To Pack For Abu Dhabi
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

What to do in Abu Dhabi?
Visiting the Emirates Palace (actually one of Abu Dhabi’s best luxury hotels, but, WOW), the Etihad Towers and the Sheikh Zayed mosque are my must-do’s in Abu Dhabi.
That being said, if you have time while you’re here, make sure you explore outside of Abu Dhabi too. There’s so much more to see and do, I’ve got plenty more ideas in the neighborhood sections above.
Are there palaces in Abu Dhabi?
Yassss, Queen!
I recommend visiting Qasr Al Watan, they host tours there and are a functioning presidential palace. The ‘Palace of the Nation’ celebrates the UAE’s history and culture. Visit the palace, learn about its heritage, and make sure you see the spectacular light and sound show Palace in Motion.
What’s the weather in Abu Dhabi?
Not too hot to handle! The city is so well equipped with AC and pools a-plenty you’ll be able to find sweet relief. That being said, be smart, and be prepared, the weather around the world is changing and Abu Dhabi has experienced its fair share of unusual weather events.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for Abu Dhabi
You never know, a rogue camel could eat your lunch… and your backpack! Everyone needs good travel insurance.
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is a great place to spend a layover, but you’ll need more than a couple of days to really make the most of it. From white-sand beaches relaxing on the beach to energetic roller coasters, Abu Dhabi is the perfect vacation destination.
There’s so much to choose from, in Abu Dhabi, it can be a little overwhelming! If you’re still unsure where to stay, I recommend The Corniche. It’s got a bit of everything and is well-connected to the other areas of Abu Dhabi.
Whatever your reason for visiting Abu Dhabi, I hope you feel inspired by my article. I reckon it’s essential to get amongst the vibrant culture of this shimmering city in whatever way lights you up. For me, this is getting my thrills at WB Abu Dhabi theme park and then max relaxin’ on the shores of the corniche.
