COOLEST PLACE TO STAY
Haad Salad, Koh Phangan
COOLEST PLACE TO STAY

Haad Salad

Haad Salad is one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan. This idyllic cove has white sand and crystal clear turquoise waters and is surrounded by lush green trees.

FOR FAMILIES
Thong Nai Pan, Koh Phangan
FOR FAMILIES

Thong Nai Pan

Thong Nai Pan is a scenic area situated on the northeastern side of the island. This calm and unique region is often overlooked by travellers. But, Thong Nai Pan has so much to offer visitors.

Koh Phangan is one of the many pristine and gorgeous islands situated in the Gulf of Thailand; a little island paradise that attracts travellers, backpackers, hippies, drop out and ravers from around the world.

Famed for (and largely built around) the raucous full moon parties, Koh Phangan is without a doubt the single most hedonistic place in Thailand that I visited and most visitors come here to party. However, there is more to Koh Phangan than lounging, boozing and dancing if you know where to look.

In fact, Koh Phangan, Thailand’s fifth-largest island, offers an incredible array of diving sites, lush jungles, charming villages and natural attractions to explore for those who are so inclined.

The island is not huge and you can explore a good chunk of it by scooter bike in half a day (if you bum can take it). There is one main road that semi-circles the island (it doesn’t form a full ring owing to geological challenges) and a few more crossing the middle of the island via the seriously steep mountain roads.

As such, everything in Koh Phangan is within striking distance from wherever you are staying. However, you do still need to plan where you stay carefully otherwise you may lose a few hours each day in driving.

The town’s administrative centre of Tong Sala (or Pantip) is where the ferry docks and is effectively Koh Phangan town centre. There are plenty of shops and bars here and it’s kind of in the middle of everything. There are plenty of guest houses here but most visitors prefer to stay elsewhere.

South of Tong Sala we get Head south from here and you’ll arrive in Baan Tai. This is our number one pick for where to stay in Koh Phangan if you’re visiting for the first time because it has a handy location, beautiful beaches, and plenty of services and amenities. I stayed here for the first part of my trip.

A fifteen-minute ride along the southern coast is Haad Rin. This area is the infamous place to visit in Thailand for raucous monthly full moon parties, which is why it wins our vote for where to stay in Koh Phangan for nightlife.

Ok, if we go North of Tong Sala, we pass through Naiwak, Serihani, Haad Yor and then Haad Salad; an unspoilt and pristine area and one of the coolest places to stay in Koh Phangan because it offers idyllic coves, picture-perfect beaches and delicious restaurants.

And finally, on the far-northeastern side of the island is Thong Nai Pan. Made up of two stunning coves, Thong Nai Pan has excellent swimming, and gorgeous beaches. It’s my pick for where to stay in Koh Phangan for families.

Oh, note that accommodation standards vary pretty wildly here on Koh Phangan. Because so many visitors only come for the full moon parties and don’t really care about comfortable digs, some of the beach shacks are seriously rudimentary. Also, note that accommodation prices go mental around full moon time.

Koh Phangan’s 5 Best Neighborhoods to Stay in

Now, let’s take a look, in more detail, at the best places in Koh Phangan to stay. Like most places you stay in Thailand, each is a little different from the last, so be sure to read each section carefully and pick the village or beach that’s right for you!

#1 Baan Tai – Where to Stay in Koh Phangan for Your First Time

The charming and beautiful town of Baan Tai is the best neighborhood in Koh Phangan to stay in if you’re visiting for the first time (I spent my first week here before moving on). It is well located on Koh Phangan’s south coast and offers easy access to Tong Sala centre and the parties down in Haad Rin.

This town is also well-equipped with a variety of services, including ATMs, supermarkets, internet cafes and travel agents. Oh, and it’s easy as fuck to rent a bike here too.

Baan Thai is also home to one of the longest beaches on the entire island. Here you can enjoy a variety of watersports, including kayaking and SUP, or simply lounge on the sands and enjoy the picture-perfect-postcard views.

It’s just steps from the beach and has a variety of activities and attractions. This comfortable resort has an outdoor swimming pool, private bathrooms, free wifi, and wonderful views.

Leo Hostel | Best Hostel in Baan Tai

Leo Hostel

First and foremost, Leo Hostel is a social hostel. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a party hostel – though it’s a party most nights. It’s conveniently located in Baan Tai, one of Koh Phangan’s best neighborhoods, close to restaurants, shops and more. A 15-minute drive takes you to the Full Moon Parties in Haad Rin.

Alice’s Boutique Resort | Best Airbnb in Baan Tai

Alice's Boutique Resort

Alice’s isn’t the cheapest option in Baan Tai, but it is definitely the best. The place comes with free parking, a kitchen, Aircon, Wifi AND breakfast. What more can you need?

Please note it costs 1000 Baht more if you want to stay the night before or night of the full moon party.

There are also a number of clubs in Thong Sala that stay open until 2 am (DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!). Oh, and if you fancy doing some Muay Thai then there are 3 – 4 gyms based in and around Thong Sala.

Cheap bungalow in resort | Best Airbnb in Baan Kai

Cheap bungalow in resort

This affordable bungalow is a great place to relax, especially for travellers on a budget. The resort is family-run and you’ll get a warm welcome from the host and staff. The Airbnb is clean, quite modern and comes with a kitchen and fridge. It’s located right on the beach, however, shops are in a bit of a distance so you’ll definitely be better off with a scooter.

#3 Haad Rin – Where to Stay in Koh Phangan for Nightlife

Located on a small peninsula in southern Koh Phangan is Haad Rin. This lively and vibrant village is best known as the home of the infamous Full Moon Parties.

It’s the best neighborhood to stay in Koh Phangan for nightlife and there are parties in and around Haad Rin every single night. For example, while the legendary Saturday night Eden Garden Party takes place over at Haad Yuan beach, the ferry leaves from Haad Rin.

In addition to the world-renowned monthly beach parties, Haad Rin boasts a high concentration of bars, clubs and restaurants, so no matter your style or tastes, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

I wrote the comprehensive Koh Phangan Party Guide which tells you all you need to know about boogie-ing in Koh Phangan. Note that Haad Rin can feel kind of quiet and deflated in the daytime, especially at half-moon.

But there’s more to Haad Rin than parties. This energetic area also has a stunning beach, plenty of water sports, lots of essential services, cute Thai eco-resorts, and some truly unforgettable views.

What is the best area for backpackers to stay in Koh Phangan?

Haad Rin! It’s the best area for backpackers as it is the heart of the full moon party. This is a great place to meet friends, party your ass off and then chill out at the beach, recharge and go again 😉 If you aren’t into partying, check out Haad Salad for some of the best beaches I’ve ever seen!

What is the best place to stay in Koh Phangan for families?

I would say for families, it’s the Peaceful family bungalow. If you’re solo, or with a friend/partner though I would suggest Koh Phangan Pavilions Serviced Apartments or Havana Beach Resort Phangan. It all depends on what you are looking for, check out the options on Hostelworld for a budget place and booking.com or Airbnb if you can afford it.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Koh Phangan

If you love partying then Koh Phangan may well be your favourite place in Thailand. The full moon party here is famous for a reason – it’s legendary!

For everybody else, it is a very pleasant island and you will not want for things to see and do here (I promise). I spent a blissful month here in Spring 2023 and cannot wait to get back there.

In this guide, we’ve looked at the best places to stay in Koh Phangan. If you’re still not sure which is right for you, here is a quick recap of our favourite places:

Baan Tai and Haad RIN are my favourite areas in Koh Phangan. Baan Tai is a favourite because it is centrally located, has plenty of amenities, and has comfortable and air-conditioned rooms. My favourite play to stay here is the Phangan Hometown Resort.

Ahh Haad Rin, I love this place because it’s just steps from the beach. Plus, it’s a perfect set-up for making lifelong memories of partying on the beach at the full moon party! If you’re here for that, I’d recommend staying at Hideout Hostel.
