The Historic Centre is the historic heart of Verona. This is where you will find all of Verona’s top touristic sights, and is thus the best neighbourhood to stay if you are visiting the city for the first time.
Veronetta
The Veronetta neighbourhood is located on the eastern bank of the river Adige, on the other side from the Historic Centre. It is a lively neighbourhoods populated with students, immigrants and families.
Porta Nuova
Porta Nuova is an area located just south of the historic centre of Verona. It is a convenient place to stay as it keeps you close to all the main attractions of the city.
San Zeno
The neighbourhood of San Zeno is located a bit further away from the historic centre of Verona and is organised around the Basilica of San Zeno. It boasts a great architectural mix of 16th century Renaissance style and more modern creations.
Borgo Trento
The Borgo Trento neighbourhood is located just north of the historic centre of Verona, across the river Adige. It is close to all the main attractions while being in a quieter area, which is ideal for families.
Verona is a town located in Northern Italy, well-known for being the place where Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet story occurred. Even though it was fictional, many attractions are dedicated to Romeo and Juliet and draw thousands of tourists every year.
Remains of the Roman and Renaissance times can be found everywhere, making it a perfect place to explore Verona for history lovers. Wander through Verona’s narrow streets and discover architectural gems like Piazza delle Erbe, a lively square surrounded by medieval buildings and bustling market stalls.
The Historic Centre is where most of Verona’s attractions are located. For that reason, it is the best neighbourhood to stay in for your first trip to Verona, or if you’re backpacking Italy. It boasts great architecture, and beautiful piazzas full of history. There, you will also find Juliet’s house, with its famous balcony. It is also home to the best hotels and guest houses in Verona, but you will pay a premium for this.
On the other side of the River Adige to the east, Veronetta is a mixed and lively neighbourhood. There, you will find a lot of life thanks to the many students. It is an up-and-coming neighbourhood but remains cheaper than other areas of town.
Just south of the historic centre is the neighbourhood of Porta Nuova. The architecture around this area dates back to the Renaissance era, in the 16th century. The area has a good number of bars and is close to Verona’s main train station, making it perfect for backpackers or people embarking on a country-wide trip.
San Zeno is tucked away a bit farther from the centre. As a result, it is quieter and more peaceful. It blends architectural styles with the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and modern times living side by side. On weekends, antique markets are organised.
To the west of the River Adige is Borgo Trento, a residential neighbourhood in Verona. Borgo Trento in Verona, Italy, entices with its charming streets, warm cafes, and rich tapestry of cultural heritage, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

Still not sure which is the best area in Verona to stay in? Don’t worry! In this next section, I’ll break down the best neighbourhoods in much more detail by area:
1. Historic Centre – Where to Stay in Verona for Your First Time
Those wanting the quintessential Italian experience should stay in the Historic Centre as it’s the historic heart of Verona. There are numerous attractive boutique hotels, cosy bed & breakfasts, and lovely guesthouses nestled in centuries-old structures. Imagine waking up to the sound of church bells ringing over cobblestone streets, mere steps from historic sights such as the Arena di Verona and Juliet’s house.
At the centre of the Historic Centre is the Piazza dell Erbe. It is the oldest square in Verona and it stands where the old Roman forum used to be. Take a look at the Madonna Verona, the symbol of the town, standing above the fountain. It was created in 380 AD.
In a corner, the Torre di Lamberti is open to the public. Climb up to the top to get incredible views over the piazza and the Historic Centre.
Make sure to go see Juliet’s balcony in her infamous home as well. The house was actually built in the 14th century and was bought from a family by the city of Verona to create the attraction. The courtyard is covered in small love notes left by visitors.
This neighbourhood is home to some of the best hotels in Verona and was one of my favourite places in Italy when I visited. It’s definitely not one to miss.

This prestigious five-star hotel boasts rooms with handmade furniture, minibars, and tea/coffee makers. Each has a marble bathroom with a hairdryer and toiletries kit. Some suites include a spa bath and a separate living room. Breakfast is served daily and includes croissants, Italian cakes, and cappuccino coffee. It is tastefully designed and immaculately clean throughout. I loved the jazz music that was played in the evenings.

The Veronetta neighbourhood is located on the eastern bank of the river Adige, on the other side of the Historic Centre. It is a lively neighbourhood populated with students, immigrants and families.
Veronetta communicates with the Historic Centre thanks to several bridges, the most interesting of which is the Ponte Pietra, which means the stone bridge. While the original bridge was built by the Romans, it had to be reconstructed after World War II as retreating German troops blew it up in 1945.
The Castel San Pietro hill was built by the Austrians during the 19th century. Today, what remains is mostly ruins, but it is a place not to be missed because of the magnificent view you can get over the city from the top.
Finally, for a green rest from the city, take a stroll in the Giusti Garden, originally created in 1400. This Italian-style garden is absolutely beautiful and well worth the visit.
Piano Tre | Best Budget Hotel in Veronetta
The Piano Tre is a contemporary hotel in Veronetta. The neighbourhood of San Zeno is located a bit further away from the historic centre of Verona and is organised around the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore. It boasts a great architectural mix of 16th-century Renaissance style and more modern creations.
At its core is the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, an architectural masterpiece from the 11th century known for its gorgeous bronze doors and captivating murals depicting episodes from St. Zeno’s life. Originally built in the 5th century in Roman style, the basilica has three storeys and was enlarged at the end of the 11th century. Inside, visitors can admire the San Zeno Altarpiece created by Andrea Mantegna.
San Zeno also has thriving local markets that sell seasonal produce, handmade goods, and antiques, providing a look into the community’s daily life and traditions. There, you can discover anything secondhand, including jewels, furniture, and books. Look around for unusual Italian souvenirs and try to locate any hidden gems!

Ideal for solitary travellers or couples. There is no check-in or checl-out time, which is unusual for Airbnbs – a result, if you ask me!

The kids can have a fun day out at the Campo Giochi Per Bambini. There, you will find some swings, a carousel and a paddling pool which can be used during the summer. There is also lots of grass where you can have a picnic or a snack from the little snack bar.
Borgo Trento also has a variety of culinary delights, with classic trattorias providing delicious dishes produced using locally sourced ingredients. The neighbourhood’s culinary choices, which range from hearty pasta dishes to handcrafted gelato, are guaranteed to entice foodies.
If you’re up for a stroll, climb the hill to the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes for one of the best views of the city. The stained glass art inside the church is particularly breathtaking.
