Lake George is one of the best places to stay in the Adirondacks. This vast area of natural beauty has stunning scenery everywhere you turn, delectable restaurants in every town, and a huge selection of adventure activities throughout the year. This makes it an excellent staycation destination in the Northeast.
The town of Lake George itself is a great starting point, and where you will find the tourism centre. This makes it our top pick for first-time visitors. You’ll be able to get a sense of everything on offer, and it’s the best-connected base in the region. You can also benefit from the local tourism companies if you prefer a guided excursion.
Just south of Lake George is Glen Lake. This is sometimes considered part of the same town, but it has a more laid-back vibe. The Six Flags resort is near Glen Lake, making this an immensely popular destination with families. It’s also a good spot for fishing if you’re more of a beginner and feel intimidated by the larger Lake George.
Heading along Lake George to the north, you will find Bolton Landing stretched along the western bank. Lake George is in upstate New York, so it can get pretty expensive – but Bolton Landing isn’t as touristy so prices here are a bit more palatable. You’ll also get to enjoy a more local atmosphere, with the same stunning scenery as everywhere else along the lake.
Finally, you’ll find Ticonderoga at the northern tip of Lake George. This destination is unique, and it’s where you’ll find some fascinating historic attractions. About halfway up the western banks of Lake George, Bolton Landing is a laid-back region with far fewer tourists than those in the main town. For this reason, accommodation and restaurants tend to be cheaper here. This doesn’t mean you won’t get the same gorgeous scenery – in fact, the sights here will often be completely unspoiled by crowds of visitors scrambling to get a photo.
This local atmosphere also means you’ll get an authentic insight into local life. Even if you do stay elsewhere, make sure you head up to Bolton Landing for a few hours to gain a new perspective of the region.
Rustic Apartment in Bolton Landing: Adirondack Dream
This dreamy apartment isn’t just great for those on a budget – we believe the cozy vibes makes it the perfect choice for a winter escape. There is a log burning stove in the lounge area, with enough supplies to last your entire stay provided on arrival. The small deck area has views across the lake, as well as a grill for eating al fresco.
Lakefront Getaway in Bolton Landing: Beautiful Cottage
Nestled on the banks of the lake, this budget-friendly cottage is great for a getaway that won’t break the bank. It’s just outside the town of Bolton, so you’ll get to enjoy a more secluded atmosphere. Our favourite feature is the large window in the lounge area, giving you stunning views across the lake and of the sunset in the evenings.

Seemingly sunken into the lake, this is hands down the most unique accommodation in Bolton Landing! As a boathouse, it regularly welcomes those who are arriving by water. They provide a hearty American breakfast every morning – and there are even a few vegetarian options. It might only have one star, but it is among the best-rated hotels in the Lake George area by previous guests.

#3 Glen Lake – Best Area in Lake George for Families

Parents might prefer to check out the vast retail destinations in the area – with some of the best malls in Upstate New York. The lake itself doesn’t have as many water sports providers as Lake George, but those that are available are much better for beginners thanks to the calm water.

Another secluded gem, this quaint little lake house has its own private dock where you can keep your boat, kayaks or other equipment. In the summer it is a great jumping-off point for a quick dip in Glen Lake. It’s far too cold for this in the winter, but you’re only a ten-minute drive from some epic ski slopes.

The only hotel within walking distance of Six Flags, this is easily our top pick for families heading to Lake George! It has an indoor and outdoor pool, so you can enjoy a quick dip in the pool year-round. Adults will also be happy with the Pyramids Aviation Mall, a major shopping destination in the Glen Lake region.
Waterfront Getaway in Glen Lake: Glen Lake Cabin
Right by the lakeside, this cute little cabin is perfect for a peaceful break near Lake George! During the winter it is only a short walk from the ice rink, and in the warmer months, you can make great use of the on-site barbecue. There is a small beach area in front of the property – a rarity for cabins in the Glen Lake area.

This is where you get to discover some truly fascinating historical attractions. Ticonderoga is proud of its Native American heritage, so take the time to learn more about it whilst you’re here. It’s also right next to the border with Vermont, making it an excellent road trip stop.

Not only is it more affordable than other spots along the lake, but it also has a quirky atmosphere that is super infectious. That being said, it’s a pretty peaceful destination wherever you choose to stay. It’s a safe place to travel as well, so you can travel with extra peace of mind.
