For a long time, North Macedonia was overlooked in favour of other regional tourist destinations such as Greece and Montenegro. But this mountainous Balkan country is making a big comeback.

While landlocked, the capital city of Skopje is a beautiful blend of history, sunshine, and affordable activities. Since it’s not yet a tourist hub (yet being the operative word here), figuring out where to stay in Skopje can be tricky. From the city centre to the bustling Old Bazaar to the leafy neighbourhood of Debar Maalo, each area here offers its own flavour of life in Skopje.

Whether you are drawn to history, the great outdoors, or more interested in the culture and local daily life, this neighbourhood guide should point you in the right direction:

Where is the Best Place to Stay in Skopje?

Backpacking in the Balkans is one of the coolest travel experiences I’ve had, and visiting Skopje was a pretty epic part of it. If I had to pick three of my favourite spots to stay in the city, it would be these:

Hotel Senigallia, Central | Best Hotel in Skopje

hotel senigallia skopje

All aboard the Senigallia for a nautical-themed stay you never knew you needed. Staying on this floating docked pirate ship is a bit like living out your childhood fantasies. And I know what you might be thinking – this sounds kitsch! Well, you’ll be glad to know that there is nothing tacky about this place. It’s all luxury and style.

Floating on the Vardar River, it’s also one of the most central stays in the city. You can be at the Stone Bridge or Old Bazaar within minutes of climbing down the gangplank.

Hi Skopje Hostel, Sredno Vodno | Best Hostel in Skopje

Hi Skopje Hostel Best Hostel for Solo Traveller in Skopje

Hi Skopje is one of those Skopje Hostels that oozes personality. It’s tucked away beneath the hills around Vodno and is equal parts relaxed hideaway and social hub. You’ll find colourful hammocks, bright rooms, and a homemade breakfast each morning.

This spot radiates good energy, and with so much bright yellow throughout the space, it’s hard not to wake up in a good mood!

3-Bed Home with Farmhouse Kitchen, Karposh | Best Airbnb in Skopje

three bed home with farmhouse kitchen skopje

I’ve yet to come across a more beautiful home in Skopje. This three-bedroom home feels like it belongs in a countryside magazine. Tucked away in the leafy suburb of Karposh, it’s inspired by a classic country farmhouse. Think wood finishes, large windows, and plenty of space to cook up a feast.

The vibe at this place to stay in Skopje is calm and residential, with leafy parks and boulevards to explore.

Skopje Neighbourhood Guide – Best Places to Stay in Skopje

FIRST TIME IN SKOPJE
FIRST TIME IN SKOPJE

Central

If you’ve yet to visit this incredible city, set your sights on staying in Central Skopje. This downtown part of the city is where the capital city’s energy peaks.

ON A BUDGET
macedonia skopje debar maalo
ON A BUDGET

Debar Maalo

Debar Maalo is Skopje’s cool, laid-back, and artsy neighbourhood. Think green streets, colourful street art, and a slightly bohemian atmosphere that feels young and energetic. It’s an excellent choice for budget travellers since prices are lower here than in the city centre.

FOR HISTORY LOVERS
macedonia skopje old bazaar
FOR HISTORY LOVERS

Old Bazaar

Old Bazaar is one of the most atmospheric places to stay in Skopje. It feels like a totally different town and, at times, a different era. It’s like a living museum, full of winding alleyways, Ottoman-era mosques, and trade shops that have been operating for centuries.

FOR A PEACEFUL STAY

FOR A PEACEFUL STAY

Karposh

Karposh is a large, quiet residential neighbourhood west of the city centre. It’s far removed enough to avoid the busy city scenes but is still close enough to get to via taxi in a matter of minutes (or a 30-minute walk for those keen to get their step count in).

FOR FAMILIES
macedonia skopje vodno mountain
FOR FAMILIES

Sredno Vodno

Sredno Vodno offers the best of both worlds. It’s close to nature, yet minutes from the city centre. It’s located on the slopes of Mount Vodno, a hilly peak with plenty of trails and paths (and even a gondola) that overlook the city.

In classic Balkan style, Skopje is a true city of contrasts. One minute, you’re strolling through bazaars that feel like you’re back in the time of the Ottoman Empire; the next, you’re gazing up at brutalist architecture.

As the capital of North Macedonia, it is the cultural and political centre of the country, but each of its neighbourhoods tells a different chapter of its story.

If you want to be in the centre of it all, staying in Skopje’s downtown area, unsurprisingly called Central, is a no-brainer. Here, you’ll be within walking distance of Macedonia Square, the iconic Stone Bridge, and the slightly over-the-top collection of statues and fountains the city is so famous for.

Man on a horse statue in North Macedonia

Debar Maalo is the Skopje neighbourhood where locals go for a laid-back, artsy vibe. It’s packed with affordable hostels and apartment rentals, making it a top option for budget travellers.

The Old Bazaar is a bit like stepping into the Ottoman era. It’s home to one of the largest and best-preserved Ottoman markets in the region, with narrow streets lined with antique shops, courtyards, and mosques. Staying here means waking up to the call to prayer and sipping strong Turkish coffee in a tiny cafe.

If you prefer peace and quiet to city sounds, Karposh is a residential neighbourhood home to Skopje City Park. It’s a top area for spending time outdoors in nature, running, cycling, or just strolling through the green spaces with a picnic.

Perfectly balancing city life and that feeling of being in nature, Sredno Vodno is ideal. Located on the slopes of Mount Vodno, this area is green and leafy, with plenty of hiking trails and parks, while still bordering the city centre. If you’re travelling with your family, this is the place to look into.

Skopje’s Five Best Neighbourhoods to Stay in

Now that I’ve given you a quick summary, let’s dive into a bit more detail for each of these five neighbourhoods and the best places to stay in Skopje:

The hustle and bustle of Central is addictive.

You’ll find everything from luxury hotels to modern apartment rentals here, making it a good option for any budget. Oh, and as the name suggests, it’s centrally located, which means you’ll be within walking distance of major attractions like Macedonia Square and Stone Bridge.

Hotel Senigallia | Most Unique Hotel in Central

hotel senigallia skopje

If you’re craving a unique experience, you won’t find anything more unusual than Hotel Senigallia. It’s set on a historic wooden boat floating on the river. The hotel has eighteen rooms, each uniquely decorated in a regal marine theme.

It might sound kitsch, but it’s nothing of the sort. Senigallia is one of the most luxurious hotels in the city, with top-notch dining options and incredibly attentive staff. Not to mention, it could not be more centrally located.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Skopje

Deciding where to stay in Skopje depends on what type of vacation you’re hoping to have. If you want to be at the heart of the action, Central is the place to be. It’s close to everything and perfect for first-time visitors.

Debar Maalo is also central but a bit more bohemian and laid-back, perfect for budget travellers. History buffs and culture seekers will feel right at home in the Old Bazaar, an old Ottoman area that feels like taking a step back in time. For a quieter visit, Karposh is the closest Skopje neighbourhood to Matka Canyon. Nearby, Sredno Vodno is ideal for families. It offers easy access to outdoor activities around Mount Vodno and feels more residential.

Whether staying in the Mickitos Urban Hostel in Old Bazaar or this Sunny Loft in the boho zone of Debar Maalo, Skopje is one of those cities that will leave you wanting more.
