Downtown Puerto Iguazu is another city, but one that feels more like a local town overflowing with culture and life. It’s relaxed, social, and full of Argentinians going about their daily life.

Even though it’s at the bottom of our list, I would argue that staying within the Iguazu National Park is the best place to stay when visiting Iguazu Falls.

With its location at the intersection of three South American countries, there is a range of cities and areas around Iguazu Falls that are ideal for staying in and around when visiting the waterfalls.

1. Selva Iryapu Reserve – Where to Stay in Iguazu Falls for a First-Time Visit

You might be wondering why the Iguazu National Park doesn’t occupy the first spot on this list. Simply, while it might be the best place to visit from, there are so few accommodations around that it can also be the most expensive and difficult to book. As a top alternative, Selva Iryapu offers a similar vibe, close to the falls but without the same price tag. Consider it a bit of a soft landing for first-time visitors.

This jungle corridor sits just east of Puerto Iguazu, and staying here can, at times, feel like glamping. Most of your day will be spent surrounded by rainforest sounds. The reserve is a protected slice of paradise close to the Argentinian side of the falls, which many agree offers the most immersive walking trails. Eco-hotels and cabins dominate the accommodation scene, but there are some resorts built to blend into the environment, too.

• Best For: Nature lovers, eco stays, peaceful retreats, luxury jungle lodges
• The Vibe: Quiet, lush rainforest surroundings with a secluded, upscale feel

Loi Suites Iguazu Hotel | Best Eco-Hotel Selva Iryapu Reserve

Loi Suites is exactly the kind of place you think of when you think of a jungle hotel. The eco-property is set right in the heart of the Iryapu Reserve, surrounded by dense foliage and lively bird sounds. The property itself is built to match its surroundings. Think wooden interiors, oversized windows opening onto the jungle, and huge suites with high ceilings reminiscent of a Balinese villa. The swimming pool is a highlight, with multiple pools, bridges, and even islands on which you can relax.

El Shaddai Hostel e Pousada | Best Hostel in Selva Iryapu Reserve

El Shaddai Hostel is located somewhere between Foz do Iguazu and the Iryapu Selva Reserve, but for the purpose of convenience, it’s one of the closest hostels to the reserve. It’s simple yet comfortable, with twin rooms, doubles, and shared dorm options for all types of travellers. With free breakfast, a swimming pool, and a communal barbecue kitchen, it’s the ideal home base for those on a tight budget. I even did a short stint volunteering here a few years back.

If you’re hoping for a bit of privacy in this Iguazu Falls neighbourhood, this cabin in the jungle is a good option. The A-frame structure is surrounded by tropical plants. Inside, you’ll find modern French-inspired interiors, with stylish warm lighting, floor-to-ceiling window walls, and a dark wooden ambience. The glass-walled bathroom, which is basically in its own little jungle conservatory, and the nearby stream of fresh spring water are definitely the best things about this property.

2. Foz do Iguazu (Brazil) – Best Place to Stay When Visiting Iguazu Falls in Brazil

The general rule of thumb when searching for an affordable spot is to look at nearby major cities. Foz do Iguaçu is one of the best spots for the job and a cool place to visit when backpacking Brazil. It’s a proper working city with public transport, shops and distinct neighbourhoods. You’ll find local Brazilian families, students, and budget travellers around here. People base themselves here because accommodation is usually cheaper and logistics can be easier.

It’s on the Brazilian side of the falls, which is known for its wide-angle views and close proximity to other nearby attractions like the Itaipu Dam. Lodging ranges from budget hotels to hostels and mid-range guesthouses.

4. Visit the Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam just north of the city
5. Visit the Wandscheer Water Park for a family-friendly adventure

Hotel Rafain Centro | Best Budget Hotel in Foz do Iguazu

It might not be in the heart of a jungle, but Hotel Rafain Centro in the centre of Foz do Iguazu is a well-organised hotel with a swimming pool, a full-on kids centre, a games room, and even conference facilities. It’s perfect for families or even solo travellers visiting on a budget, but unwilling to share a room at a hostel. The suites are modern and spacious, and a delicious breakfast is served each morning.

Hostel Bambu | Best Hostel in Foz do Iguazu

One of the best places to stay in the area, Foz do Iguazu has a fair share of hostels, but none have the vibrant energy and ambience of Hostel Bambu. It’s considered the go-to party hostel of the area, with a buzzing bar, live music stage, and swimming pool that is pretty much overflowing with good vibes day and night. The 20-year-old hostel organises group activities and excursions to the falls, so you can visit with new friends, without overspending. Seriously, one of the best hostels in Brazil for vibes.

Studio with Bathtub and Views | Best Studio Rental in Foz do Iguazu

This studio is one of those places that will make you feel at ease from the moment you check in. Whitewashed concrete merges from the floor to the walls to the ceiling, creating a calming ambience of minimalism. Wooden touches and woven features bring the space together. While it might feel like this studio is in the middle of nowhere, it’s actually a high-rise apartment with impressive city views. You could call it the best of both worlds.

3. Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) – Best Place to Stay When Visiting Iguazu Falls on a Budget

Located just west of Foz do Iguazu on the Paraguay side, Ciudad del Este is a busy but small city that feels like staying in a real chaotic South American city rather than the jungle. It’s a commercial hub packed with locals, with little to no expats. Instead, the tourists you’ll find here are mostly from Brazil and Argentina, crossing the border for a taste of a different culture and country. The city is also well known for its shops, which bring a hefty concentration of cross-border shoppers to the region. 

Accommodation is mostly practical business hotels rather than resorts, but there are some incredible boutique hotels, house rentals, and even hostels for those hoping to save some money across the border.

• The Vibe: Chaotic, energetic border-city atmosphere with busy markets and commercial streets
• Proximity to Airport: ~35 mins from Guaraní International Airport (AGT)
• Transport Level: Moderate – buses and taxis are common, but traffic can be hectic
• Budget: Budget-friendly
• Crowds: High during weekdays and shopping hours, especially near the border crossings

Things to See and Do in Ciudad del Este

1. Visit all three countries (Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay) in one day
2. Visit the El Mensu History Museum for a taste of local history
3. Spend some time exploring the markets and malls 
4. Dive into the street food scene for a taste of Paraguay’s delicacies
5. Visit the Monday Falls – a 45-meter-high waterfall with plenty of hiking trails that goes well under the radar.

Bisinii Boutique Hotel | Best Boutique Hotel in Ciudad del Este

Bisinii Boutique Hotel is a boutique property across the Paraguay border that feels a bit more like staying in someone’s house than at a hotel at all. It’s even got a swimming pool, fitness centre and a brekkie included. The rooms have been refurbished with clean and modern interiors, making it one of the loveliest hotels near Iguazu Falls.

Hummingbird Hostel | Best Hostel in Ciudad del Este

For travellers who don’t need much in terms of accommodation, Hummingbird Hostel is a super affordable hostel with convenient facilities, with none of the fuss. It’s close to the centre of Ciudad del Este, within walking distance of the mall and supermarkets. A nearby bus stop offers a quick link to the Hydroelectric dam at Itaiup and the Monday Falls.

Mirador Suite | Best House in Ciudad del Este

This little suite might seem simple, but it’s got a lot to offer just beyond the surface. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlook an untouched part of the jungle, but best of all, a section of the Monday River Falls themselves. They might not be the Iguazu Falls, but having a rushing waterfall outside your bedroom window is a great way to prepare you for the real thing just across the border.

4. Puerto Iguazu Downtown (Argentina) – Best Area When Visiting Iguazu Falls for Culture and Local Vibes

Downtown Puerto Iguazu is another city, but one that feels more like a local town overflowing with culture and life. It’s relaxed, social, and full of Argentinians going about their daily life. You’ll find locals, regional travellers visiting for the falls, and backpackers around town. People love to stay in this Iguazu Falls neighbourhood for the mix of culture, walkability and easy access to tours without being stuck in a resort bubble. 

Accommodations range from hostels and guesthouses to boutique hotels. The riverfront is a top spot to relax and grab a meal after a day at the falls. If you’re travelling in Argentina, this is THE town to visit the falls from.

1. Go for a refreshing dip at the secret waterfalls
2. Cross the rainforest in an adventurous Jeep tour
3. Grab some empanadas from a local shop
4. Hike through the surrounding jungle and join a boat tour
5. Enjoy a show with dinner of traditional Argentinian barbecue
6. Familiarise yourself with the colourful birdlife at the Jardin de los Picaflores

La Aldea De La Selva Lodge | Best Lodge in Puerto Iguazu Downtown

It might be close to Puerto Iguazu Downtown, but there is nothing urban about this exquisite lodge. La Aldea De La Selva is set in the jungle, with interiors so impressive that they will make you feel like you’ve fallen into an adventure of Christopher Columbus. The dining room is the most impressive, with real trees forming the structural pillars and fireplaces warming the space (when it isn’t tropical and humid).

Tucan Hostel | Best Hostel in Puerto Iguazu Downtown

Tucan Hostel is one of my favourite places to stay near Iguazu Falls. It’s a hostel, but it feels a bit more like a retreat in the heart of the jungle. This epic Iguazu hostel is located in a safe neighbourhood within close proximity to city facilities, but in reality, it couldn’t feel further from the urban vibe. The swimming pool is a big plus for the tropical heat.

Terra Lodge: Relaxation and Nature — ‘Tierra’ Cabin | Best Lodge in Puerto Iguazu Downtown

For a home away from home in the jungle, Terra Lodge is your go-to. This two-bedroom lodge has room for five guests, a swimming pool to keep guests refreshed in the humid months, and oversized decks overlooking gorgeous gardens with native jungle plants. It’s equipped with all the necessities to make you feel at home, including a full kitchen and living area.

5. Parque Nacional Iguazu – Best Area When Visiting Iguazu Falls for a Luxurious Trip

Even though it’s at the bottom of our list, I would argue that staying within the Iguazu National Park is the best place to stay when visiting Iguazu Falls. The thing is, there are only two hotels in the park, right by the falls, both of which are relatively luxurious and expensive. The first two properties on this list reflect these resorts, while the third is located slightly outside of the national park borders. This area is all about exclusivity, silence, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There are no locals around here, just park staff and luxury hotel guests. I mean, you literally get to stay next to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world… of course, it’s expensive.

People choose this area for romance, special occasions, and easy access to the falls once everyone else has gone home. Accommodation might be limited, but it is sure to be luxurious with views you won’t quickly forget.

• Crowds: High during daytime around the falls, but quiet in the evenings once day-trippers leave

Things to See and Do in Parque Nacional Iguazu

1. Join a bike tour through the national park and Jaquar Road
2. Visit the Salto Arrechea ecological park
3. Visit the park visitor centre 
4. Ride the open-air train through the jungle
5. Check out the exquisite views from the Trilha das Cataratas observation deck
6. Eat overlooking the waterfalls at the Restaurante Porto Canoas buffet

Gran Meliá Iguazú | Most Luxurious Resort in Parque Nacional Iguazú

There are few places better to stay when visiting Iguazu Falls than the Gran Melia resort within the boundaries of the national park itself. From the pool, you can feel the rumble of the falls and even see the misty smoke rising from its impact. The resort is equipped with everything you might need for a luxurious stay. Think spa, multiple pools, airport shuttle and an exceptional breakfast served each morning.

Hotel das Cataratas, A Belmond Hotel | Another Gorgeous Hotel in Parque Nacional Iguazu

Hotel das Cataratas is another great place to stay within the national park. It’s got a more historic ambience than a resort one, with heritage buildings and stunning grounds right overlooking the impact of the falls. The interiors are unparalleled, with tropical plants and a wild look that could only be described as ‘jungle-chic’.

Wish Foz do Iguazu | Best Family Friendly Resort near Parque Nacional Iguazu

Wish Foz do Iguazu isn’t technically inside the national park, but it’s close enough to feel like it is. I’ll admit, it is a bit of a cookie-cutter resort, but it has all the amenities and facilities for an epic family trip. Spend the morning in the pool before depositing your kids at the kids club, and end the day with a delicious dinner at one of three on-site restaurants.

As you can see, there are some incredible options for places to stay when visiting Iguazu Falls. In fact, the area is so diverse that it is spread across three different countries. Choosing the best place really comes down to how you want to experience this little corner of South America. 

If it’s your first time visiting, the jungle lodges around Reserve Selva Iryapu are an easy option. Downtown Puerto Iguazu keeps things social and cultural, but also very convenient. Budget travellers will be able to find some affordable places to stay in Iguazu Falls in Foz do Iguazu.

For more of an urban (and equally affordable) experience, Ciudad del Este in Paraguay is a good option; otherwise, the ultimate destination would have to be right inside the borders of Iguazu National Park. Match your energy and own travel needs with one of these areas, and book early!
