Now, while the city’s prestigious galleries and marbled landmarks no doubt steal the show, it didn’t take me long to realise that some of Florence’s best sights are often concealed in plain sight.
Wander down seemingly unremarkable alleys, peek behind innocuous doors, step within easily overlooked facades and you might just find yourself faced with a side of Florence that few tourists know about!
From secret graveyards to works by famous artists etched in an ancient street wall, unpretentious organic wineries, and artisan cooking classes, I think that the real magic of Florence lies wayyyy beyond the usual tourist spots.
So, let’s venture off the beaten track in search of those INCREDIBLE hidden gems in Florence!

What’s Florence Like?
It’s no secret that Florence is renowned for its artistic marvels and cultural riches. After all, Michelangelo himself was born in Florentine territory!
By far the most famous sight in Florence, the Uffizi Gallery is a world-renowned destination that’s packed full of treasures. I personally recommend exploring Florence’s top museums, including the Uffizi, David, and Accademia, some of the most history-laden spots in the city – perfect if you want to take in the most popular attractions in just one day!

Florence is also famous for its stunning architecture, so be sure to check out marvels like Brunelleschi’s Dome, the Piazza del Duomo, and the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, famed for its amazing blend of Renaissance and Gothic style.
Now, there’s no shortage of amazing sights to enjoy during your backpacking trip around Florence, but did you know that the city also offers an excellent jumping point to the (many) Italian gems speckled across the countryside? With a guided day trip from the city, you can easily explore popular Italian communes like Pisa, Siena, and even San Gimignano.
After exploring all the famous spots that put Florence on the map, be sure to save some time to explore these lesser-known sights that’ll unveil a whole other world to the city!
To make things easier for you, I compiled a list of the best-hidden gems in Florence below. Let’s dive in!
1. Look for Michelangelo’s Hidden Sculpture
Michelangelo’s work is proudly splashed all over Florence – but carved right in the Palazzo Vecchio’s façade is another secret sculpture that most tourists don’t even notice as they walk past.
Known as L’importuno di Michelangelo, this amazing hidden gem in Florence may look like some kind of weird graffiti carved into the wall – well, at first glance. Peer closer though and you’ll realize that it’s basically a caricature depicting a man’s face.
As it so happens, this caricature was carved by Michelangelo himself, although the reasons behind this impromptu street art aren’t quite clear. Rumour has it that there was a man who used to bore the artist every day with long, uninteresting stories. Michelangelo apparently ended up carving the man’s face into the wall to help pass the time while pretending to listen.
Speaking of hidden Michelangelo drawings, you’ll also find some of the artist’s secret works in a tiny room under the Medici Chapel of the Basilica di San Lorenzo where he was imprisoned for months.
Once a hidden gem, this secret room is gradually growing in popularity thanks to social media so be sure to check it out before the crowds settle!

2. Discover the Palazzo Vecchio’s Secret Passage
During a trip around Italy, where else could beat the thrill of wandering around a museum? Speaking of which, did you know that the Palazzo Vecchio houses hidden gems and secret passageways that few travellers know about?
Now, I know that the Palazzo Vecchio is everything but an underrated place, but this activity takes you to the lesser-known spots in this historic building.
Not only will you skip the line, but you’ll also wander through passages that were kept hidden for years. You can go behind the scenes to see masterpieces by celebrated artists of the Renaissance and the secret rooms of the Medici Family.
This hidden gem in Italy also houses a mysterious stairway that Gualtieri di Briene ordered to be built right inside the walls. You’ll also discover the office of Francesco I de’ Medici which is an absolute treasure trove that still contains the desk of Tesorreto.

3. Visit the Oldest Pharmacy in the World
One of my favourite hidden gems in Florence, the Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy is said to be the oldest pharmacy in Italy – not to mention the oldest operational pharmacy in the world!
Dating all the way back to 1221, the pharmacy was founded by Dominican monks, and it quickly became known for its high-quality salves, balms, medicines, and scents. I was told that the pharmacy still uses traditional preparation techniques today. It also still carries products that were popular back in the 1200s, such as the Seven Thieves Vinegar smelling salts.
The pharmacy is also known for its production of Armenian paper incense which dates back to the 16th century. Made from oriental spices and resins, this scent burns without a flame.
The pharmacy offers a fascinating array of products from the bygone days, and I strongly suggest a visit even if you don’t want to buy anything. It’s still housed in its original building, complete with marble flooring, frescoes, vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows…the works!

4. Experience Florence as a Local
Experiencing Florence through the eyes of a local is truly special. On bike? It’s even better.
This guide will take you through the highlights of the city but mostly the hidden gems where you will be seeing secret spots and hearing stories that you can’t find in any of the history books.
Roberto’s combination of historical expertise, engaging storytelling, multilingualism, and charismatic personality sets this tour apart from the rest.
The fun-filled bike ride, coupled with Roberto’s stand-up comedy-like interactions with locals, makes it a standout experience. The whole Florence itinerary was unforgettable, and I couldn’t have had a better time.

5. Delve into the Legend of La Berta
If you visit the church of Santa Maria Maggiore via dè Cerretani, chances are that you’ll be shocked to see the odd sculpture of a woman’s head randomly sticking out from the wall.
Known as La Berta, this sculpture is at the centre of mysterious Florentine legends. Some locals will tell you that a woman was cursed by an astronomer in 1326 and she ended up petrified inside the wall as a result.
Others reckon that Berta is nothing more than a statue that was erected in honour of a woman who donated a bell to the church. According to some historians, Berta is the head of an ancient Roman sculpture that dates back to the Middle Ages.
Regardless of what you choose to believe in, there’s no denying that Berta’s head is one of the most unusual (not to mention lesser-known!) artefacts in Florence.

Florence is full of cultural and artsy museums which, let’s face it, can be a real bore for kids! If you’re traveling with the family though, you can always check out the HZERO Museum which is built around one of the largest model train sets in Europe.
One of the top magical places in Florence for kids, this museum offers a full-on sensory environment that’ll help you experience what trains were like back in the bygone days. You’ll even wander a 280-square-metre route punctuated by historical newsreels as you step back into the 50s and 60s.
Oh, and did I mention that your ticket also treats you to a 10% discount at the Hard Rock Café Restaurant and the Hard Rock Shop?

7. Explore the Tower of Arnolfo
Now, the Tower of Arnolfo is not exactly a hidden gem, but it has managed to stay somewhat off the tourist radar.
Named after its architect, Arnolfo di Cambio, the tower stands as a testament to medieval architecture and the political power of Florence during the 13th century.
This is one of those places where a comfy pair of travel shoes is ESSENTIAL as you’ll be climbing 233 steps to the top. Once there, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Florence including iconic landmarks like the Duomo and the Arno River.
For a truly immersive experience, you can visit Arnolfo Tower Museum, where you’ll discover more of Florence’s secrets.

8. Create your Own Florentine Masterpiece
The is known for its vibrant art scene so what better place to get those creative juices flowing, right?
If you’ve been looking for unique things to do in Florence, I can totally vouch for this small-group art lesson that takes place in a private studio. You can choose from oil painting or clay sculpting lessons.
Because the class is limited to 8 people, you’ll have plenty of personalized attention from your instructor who will let you in on the secrets of ancient and more contemporary techniques.

9. Visit The Scuola del Cuoio
As far as hidden gems in Florence are concerned, this one is a real doozy!
This leather school is all about preserving the leather tradition in Florence and sits along the Arno River, which played a crucial role in Florence’s thriving leather industry.
Whether you’re a pro artist or just dig cool stuff, this The Scuola Del Cuoio’s gonna light a fire under your inspiration for sure.

10. Learn the Secrets of the Local Cuisine
It’s a well-known fact that Italian cuisine is among the best in the world. If you’re a foodie like me, I totally recommend signing up for a local cooking class so you can easily replicate these dishes back home.
This is a great activity for solo travellers in Italy who want a bit of socializing while learning the secrets of Italian cuisine. It takes you on a nearly 5-hour experience during which you’ll visit a few markets in search of some scrumptious culinary treasures.

You’ll be accompanied by both a chef and a guide who will help you pick out the finest ingredients before heading back into the kitchen.
The chef will guide you through a 4-course Italian feast, complete with an appetizer, handmade pasta, and either a meat or a vegetarian course followed by dessert. A complimentary glass of Italian wine will be served as you sit down to enjoy the fruits of your labour at the end of your culinary course.

11. Check out the Cappella di San Luca
Another incredible Florentine treasure, the Cappella di San Luca is a place that I stumbled upon entirely by accident. A couple of wrong turns led me right to the Chapel of Saint Luke (as the Cappella is known in English) and boy, was I in for a real treat!
Part of the Cappella di San Luca Church, the Cappella di San Luca is entirely free to visit. I found it to be an amazing depiction of fine Italian architecture, complete with ornate frescoes, statues, and carvings.
Dating back to the mid-16th century, the chapel was originally constructed for the Brotherhood of San Luca, hence the name.

12. Stroll through the Stibbert Museum and Garden
As far as magical places in Florence are concerned, this one is definitely among my favourites!

A great destination for military and history buffs, the Stibbert Museum and Garden also happens to be one of the quirkiest spots in the city. Unfortunately, it’s often overshadowed by more famous museums like the Galleria dell’ Accademia and the Uffizi.
Visitors will find quite an eclectic collection of weaponry, artefacts, and armoury, all dispersed throughout the property’s 57 rooms.
Be sure to check out the Hall of Knights and the Medieval Room as well. These boast a staggering number of samurai swords as well as full-scale replicas of armoury and horses.
By the way, if you’re planning on visiting several museums, I recommend getting a Firenze Card for free access to most venues, including Stibbert!

13. Escape the Crowds at the Chiostro dello Scalzo
Here’s another secret spot that’s hidden practically in plain sight! Located just around the corner from the San Marco Monastery, the Chiostro dello Scalzo offers a glorious respite from the noise and bustle of the city.
Designed by famed architect Giuliano da Sangallo, this cloister also features Mannerist and Renaissance frescoes made by ‘the faultless painter’, Andrea del Sarto.
Art aficionados will no doubt appreciate the grisaille painting technique which depicts the frescoes in monochromatic pigments. Painted between 1509 and 1526, these artistic treasures are centred around the life of John the Baptist.
Just a quick heads up though: while entirely free to visit, this hidden gem in Florence is sometimes closed, so be sure to check the official website for their hours.

I know what you’re probably thinking: why a cemetery (of all places!) on a list of hidden gems in Florence? Well, don’t knock it until you’ve seen this place for yourself!
Nestled right behind the San Miniato al Monte Church, this ancient cemetery also doubles as an open-air museum, complete with intricately carved memorials and funeral art. Numerous architectural styles await, all ranging from Art Deco to Renaissance.
Keep your eyes peeled for the effigy that shows a pair of siblings dancing together, a piece that’s admired for its stunning craftsmanship.
Because it’s located off the beaten track, this place is perfect for enjoying unblemished views of Florence’s skyline without having to fight the crowds that usually gather at more popular places like Piazzale Michelangelo. Bear in mind that there’s a bit of an uphill trek to the cemetery.

15. Relax in Todo Modo
Let’s wrap up with Todo Modo, a place that perfectly lends itself to bookworms, coffee aficionados, and fans of the performing arts!
Indeed, this hideaway seamlessly combines a theatre, a café, and a bookshop in one. It’s open every day of the week and (more importantly), it’s got numerous rooms for you to explore. One of the rooms is the Uqbar, a hidden gem café with multi-level seating. Uqbar Café hosts cultural and theatrical events at least once a book.

The bookshop is found in a separate room. Take a moment to browse this section since it’s got quite a few rare books and other treasures!
For a truly immersive experience, consider staying nearby at the serene Via dei Fossi apartment, where you can start your mornings with a leisurely visit to the café each day.
